Description
If you are a big fan of 90s TV and movies, you will be a big fan of this. The CA5A3 is an SMG5 from the prime of its life, before the AR15 took over every role, back when SMGs were in style and PDWs still only existed on paper. The notable features of the CA5A3 that distinguish it from other SMG5 variants are its S-E-F (Sicher-Einzelfeuer-Feuerstoß) trigger group, differing from the usual "NAVY" pictogram trigger group, and its original sliding stock, from a time before the -J type butt plate. Lets take a deeper dive and discover what else the CA5A3 can boast about...
Starting at the tip we can find the large SMG5 flash hider, which is removable via a small grub screw on the underside of the front sight block. Beneath the flash hider the CA5A3 sports 14mm CCW male threads, allowing any other muzzle device, including suppressors and tracer units, to be mounted. The front sight block also provides a sling point, for use of slings with a "HK Hook" or with the help of paracord or a keyring, most other slings. Next up we have the tactical lighted forearm, featuring a 65 lumen torch and integrated pressure switch on the right side of the SMG. The pressure switch lies right beneath the fingers when the CA5A3 is gripped, allowing you to operate the flashlight with little effort and no change in grip. The flashlight requires 2 CR123A batteries which are not included. The tactical lighted forearm mounts using the usual SMG5 pin, which goes through the handguard and secures to the cocking tube. This attachment method allows any other SMG5 handguard to be used, should you get tired of the super-slick integrated flashlight (we doubt you will!). The cocking tube is made entirely from metal and contains the metal charging handle, which can be actuated and locked in order to access the slider adjustable HOP unit through the mock ejection port on the right side of the SMG. The mock bolt which covers the HOP unit is finished in metallic gun metal, and features realistic fake weld marks. Above the ejection port we can find the SMG5 receiver lugs, allowing a Picatinny railed scope mount to be added if you require an optical sight. At the rear of the metal receiver we can find the rear sight, which is an SMG5 rotary drum dioptre sight. This provides 4 different apertures for aiming and can be set depending on the range of the engagement and the level of precision you need. As we move downwards we encounter a large groove on either side running the length of the receiver, which provides a track for the retractable stock bars to travel, keeping the CA5A3 sleek and flat-sided with fewer protrusions and less likelihood of the SMG snagging on your equipment. The lower receiver/fire control group is constructed from high-density polymer with a metal switch, which appears on the left side only. The selector positions are marked "S-E-F", with the "E" and "F" markings painted in red and "S" in white. The pistol grip is ergonomically shaped, with a subtle thumb rest and finger grooves, making this SMG5 very comfortable to hold, whilst being secure in the hand. The trigger guard is enlarged to allow for the use of gloves. The magazine release can be found just ahead of the enlarged trigger guard and mounts though the upper receiver and trigger group. This takes the form of an ambidextrous paddle release, connected to an AR15 style release on the right side of the receiver. This allows the CA5A3 to facilitate left-handed reloads and those fussy people who have an M4 and will not go near anything that doesn't have familiar controls. The end cap at the rear of the receiver is constructed from alloy and features a steel sling mounting bar on the left side, which can be used alone with 1-point slings or in conjunction with the front sling mount. The end cap is retained by another SMG5 pin, which can be removed as part of the disassembly procedure. The paddle to extend the stock can be found between the butt-plate and the end cap, and can be pushed from the right side to the left in order to unlock the retractable stock. The stock will pop open slightly under spring pressure, allowing it to be quickly deployed. The stock offers 3 positions of adjustment, fully collapsed, half extended for compressed stances and fully extended. To collapse the stock again, simply push the paddle to the left side and slide the stock closed, giving it a smack to lock the paddle back in the centre position and secure the stock. The polymer butt plate is of the retro SMG5 style, and features moulded in diamond checkering to prevent it from moving around on gear/tac vests when shouldered. The butt plate also features one extra sling loop giving you additional flexibility in how you set up your sling.
Internally, the CA5A3 features a version.2 gearbox and a slider adjustable HOP unit designed in house by Classic Army themselves for the CA5 series. This HOP has an excellent reputation, and provides the CA5A3 with range more suited to a battle rifle than an SMG! Inside the reinforced version.2 gearbox we have steel gears, a polycarbonate piston, 7mm bearing bushings and a basic MOSFET, extending the life of your electrical components and providing an all-round balanced set of high performance internals. CA are an old name in Airsoft, and they have only stuck around this long because they know exactly what they are doing. When tested, we found that this AEG was remarkably consistent, with all shots lying within a few FPS of 328, nearly exactly 1 joule of energy. This tells us that the air-seal in the CA5A3 is basically perfect, and the setup gets the absolute best out of the 1 joule spring inside. If you are looking for a compact weapon that is equipped to clear rooms but also has some reach, the CA5A3 will suit you.

These table can be used as a reference to see if the BB weight you are using will be over acceptable Joulage limits at some Airsoft Sites in the UK. To check if the weight can be used chrono your weapon using the BB you intend to use, and then compare it to the chart.
FPS, Power and Joule Limits can vary from site to site, so please get in touch with where you're going to play with in advance to avoid disappointment.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, with a 350fps limit for Automatic Replicas, 400fps for Semi-Automatic Replicas, and 500fps for Bolt Action Replicas.
