Description
The Real Kalashnikov AK-47 Type 3 Assault Rifle
A rifle everyone recognises as the "bad guy" gun, the AK-47 originated during WWII, following on from a range of "light rifle" designs and heavily influenced by the German StG-44, the original assault rifle. The AK-47 blended a StG-like external format with an M1 Garand-derived internal design and a new 7.62x39 M43 intermediate round, with a healthy dose of Soviet utilitarianism, simplicity and reliability.
After several iterations, the AK-47 Type 3 became the standard-issue rifle of the Soviet Red Army in 1956, serving alongside the SKS rifle until the conception of the AKM. Known for its hefty and robust milled steel receiver, the Type 3 was copied by the Chinese, dubbed the "Type 56" and used throughout the Vietnam conflict, and also served as the basis for the more mass-production-friendly AKM and AK-74 rifles which followed.
Its presence in the Vietnam War made the US Military rethink its approach to mass-issued assault rifles, resulting in the M16A1 being hastily adopted to replace the M14. Having proven itself in many conflict zones across the world, the AK-47 Type 3 has barely changed since its conception, a credit to its fantastic design, ease of use and effectiveness in combat.
Platform Details
At the front, we have a fixed front sight post made from alloy, mounted to the steel outer barrel. Having a steel barrel keeps weight distribution realistic without being overburdening, perfect for those who like to move fast but experience realistic handling.
The tip of the barrel features a thread protector which perfectly matches the real AK-47 muzzle nut. If you unscrew this, you'll find 14mm CCW male barrel threading, ready to be kitted out with a tracer or suppressor. Below the front sight, we have a mock cleaning rod made from alloy, an important part of the iconic AK-47 silhouette. Above the cleaning rod, the barrel features realistic ribs, perfectly matching the real AK-47.
Moving back, we can find the mock gas tube and gas block, both perfectly replicating the shape of the real AK-47 Type 3, made from alloy with a flat black finish. On the left side of the gas block, we are equipped with a steel sling loop, which can be paired with the sling loop on the stock to mount a two-point sling. Its steel construction ensures the loop will never fail, no matter how rough you are with it!
Next up, we reach the real wood handguards, perfectly matching the real AK-47 in shape and layout, complete with 2 cooling ports on each side. The real wood handguards complete the iconic AK look while enhancing handling and realism considerably.
Behind the upper handguard, we have what is known as the "trunnion block". This is where the rear iron sight mounts, and in the real steel, this is where the barrel connects to the receiver.
The rear sight is known as a "tangent" sight and can be adjusted to suit different engagement ranges by holding the drum on the left side down and sliding the drum back and forth to raise and lower the rear notch. This sight style is fantastic for Airsoft, as its open-notch design makes it easy to track moving targets.
The receiver is made from hefty alloy, perfectly matching the shape and design of the original AK-47 Type 3 rifle. The charging handle is on the right side, affixed to the alloy mock bolt carrier. This can be pulled back for a satisfying "clack", but if you pull it back and hold it in place, you can access the Slider adjustable HOP-up.
The adjustable HOP-up lets you vary the amount of backspin applied to your BBs to extend range and allow for heavier ammo to be used. To increase the HOP-up effect, simply move the slider rearwards. Returning the slider to the front will reduce the HOP-up to its lowest setting. We recommend 0.25g BBs, as they are great for both indoor and outdoor gameplay.
On the right side, we can find the fire selector switch, which doubles as a dust cover when in the uppermost "safe" position. The fire mode positions are laid out in the same way as the real steel AK-47: with safe at the top, fully automatic in the middle and semi-automatic at the bottom.
The fire selector is made from steel for added strength on this often-used component. The fire selector markings are moulded into the receiver, with authentic Russian Cyrillic letters denoting each mode.
On the bottom of the receiver, we come to the trigger guard/magazine release assembly, offering a centrally positioned mag catch which is easy to access from either side. This means you can easily reload whether you're left- or right-handed, with no special tricks needed. This entire assembly is made from stamped steel, enhancing realism and strength.
The magazine insertion method for the AK is the "rock and lock" method, meaning you'll need to index the hook on the front of the mag in the receiver, then rock the rear back to meet the magazine catch and lock into place. If you're struggling, check out our PBTV Video: How to Load an Airsoft AK.
Behind the trigger guard, we can find the pistol grip of the AK-47, made from real wood, pairing perfectly with the real wood handguard and stock. This is a perfect match for the real AK-47 Type 3 build, as this was one of the few AK variants issued with a wood pistol grip before the advent of Bakelite plastic used on the later AKM and AK-74.
Above the receiver, we have what is known as the "receiver top cover", made from stamped steel. This part covers the action of the real AK and prevents dirt and debris ingress. The smooth design of the top cover is a perfect match for the real AK-47 Type 3.
At the rear, we have a fixed stock made from real wood, with a robust steel butt plate to prevent drops from causing damage. On the left side of the stock, we are equipped with a steel sling point, ready for a two-point sling when paired with the front sling point on the left side of the handguard.
Internals
Inside, the Cybergun AK-47 is based around a version 3 gearbox, featuring an alloy shell, 18:1 ratio steel gears and CYMA's electric blowback system. Most of the internals are standard TM V3 spec, meaning upgrades and replacement parts are easy to source when needed. The adjustable HOP-up unit is a slider-style design, compatible with standard AEG barrels. HOP-up buckings and nubs.
The highlight is the EBB system, an electro-mechanical blowback mech which cycles the mock bolt carrier with each shot, providing an immersive metal-on-metal "clank" as you shoot. While shooting the AK-47 EBB isn't quite the jaw-rattling GBBR experience, it drowns out the usual AEG firing noise with an aggressive clack-clack-clack and is far more exciting to shoot than other AK AEGs, with no compromises in terms of mag compatibility or affordability.

Joule Charts
Special Instructions
These tables can be used as a reference to see if the BB weight you are using will be over acceptable joule limits at some Airsoft Sites in the UK. To check if the weight can be used chrono your weapon using the BB you intend to use, and then compare it to the chart.
FPS, Power and Joule Limits can vary from site to site, so please get in touch with where you're going to play with in advance to avoid disappointment.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used at Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, with a 350fps limit for Automatic Replicas, 400fps for Semi-Automatic Replicas, and 500fps for Bolt Action Replicas.
Tap the tabs below to open the relevant chart for your replica.
This table should be used for reference and cannot be used to check one weight against another, as the weight of the BB affects the power.
In order to check if the BB can be used with your replica chronograph using the weight you wish to use and then compare it against the table.
Every time you change weights you will need to re-chrono and check against the table. This is not a conversion chart between weights.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, and is the equivalent of 350fps, using 0.20g BB resulting in an upper limit of 1.14j.
