The UK’s Favourite Superheroes

The UK’s Favourite Superheroes

In need of a slice of escapism? When is the answer to this question ever NOT to binge-watch all 24 Marvel masterpieces? Or to kick back in front of some of the most thrilling excursions deep into the DC Universe? Never, that’s when. Nothing quite beats the familiarity we’ve built with our favourite fantasy worlds and the characters that we’ve followed through each.

While it certainly feels as though we’ve existed in a universe worthy of some of our top silver screen dystopian productions, we’re still enjoying our go-to superhero adventures. But which character outdoes all of the rest, proving worthy of the title of the UK’s favourite superhero?

Spanning the width and breadth of the UK, we took a host of some of the top names from Marvel and DC to uncover who the favourite was across some of the country's biggest cities, as well as finding out who the overall UK winner was. Our data used a combined analysis of online search trends and the number of monthly searches.

City-to-city, classic DC Kryptonian Superman soared above the rest. The red-caped crusader won the top spot in a quarter of the 20 UK cities reviewed. However, while the debate over Batman v Superman remains unsolved, Mr. Kent wasn’t able to beat Gotham’s nocturnal vigilante to a top ten position in the UK, overall…

When it comes to the favourite fictional universe, Marvel reigns victorious according to our findings. Deadpool has outmanoeuvred a string of his fellow fictional warriors to be crowned the UK’s favourite superhero according to our nationwide analysis. This antihero plays by his own rules, and the UK seems to admire his rebellious streak. Brits search for Deadpool over 4 times per minute (5,800 times per day), 400 times more often than the average person thinks about sex (14.5 times per day).

With filming of the third instalment delayed by the pandemic, fans of the ever-humorous chatterbox will likely have to wait with bated breath for his next battle against T-Ray.

In the second place, Marvel secures another victory with its typically star-studded portrayal of Spiderman. While our ‘spidey-senses’ might be split as an audience when it comes to deciding which actor depicts our favourite web-throwing do-gooder in the best light, he’s made it as one of our most celebrated heroes.

Fans embrace some fierce Amazonian power to take down the many facets of evil with, as Wonder Woman claims an impressive accolade of third in our roundup. Being one of the most historic characters, DC’s Wonder Woman has one of the longest reputations for upholding good in the face of sinister opponents. Wonder Woman’s loyal fans will also have to wait slightly longer than anticipated, as the next film doesn’t look set to be released any sooner than 2023.

The UK looked across the pond towards its fourth favourite, Captain America. The mighty World War II super-soldier swoops into fourth place in the name of liberty. Next, in fifth place, DC’s second appearance in the top five is completed with Gotham City’s protector. Batman defends his spot with a formidable record of defeating evil, as fans eagerly await the March 2022 premiere of the next film, ‘The Batman’.

Our silver screens will feed the hunger for superhero films we’ve all endured while filming and premieres were pushed back due to the pandemic, so there’s plenty to look forward to in the upcoming years. In the meantime, we’ve also rounded up a selection of UK cities top superheroes, find out your region's favourite below!
