- Full metal construction
- Full Steel internals
- Incredible recoil & efficiency
If you're a fan of the iconic AK-74 looking for the best replica around, you just found it! The VFC AV74M / AK-74M GBBR is a stunner of a full metal build bristling with steel, both inside and out, replicating the real steel AK-74M, the post-Cold-War-era modernised AK currently serving alongside the AK-12 as the primary rifle of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
On the outside, everything that should be steel is steel, providing realistic heft and balance which can only be matched by a real AK. Inside, the entire trigger group and bolt carrier are also made from steel, saving you a heap of money on longevity upgrades and giving the AV74M everything it needs to last a lifetime of heavy use.
A premium piece as well suited to a high-end collection as it is out on the field, the VFC AV74M / AK-74M GBBR is a significant improvement over other GBBR AKs, both in its realistic details and impressive performance. With a beating heart of hard recoil backed up with incredible gas efficiency, a steel full-travel bolt carrier and authentic Izhmash Arsenal markings, this is almost definitely the best GBBR AK replica out there!

Platform Details
Starting at the tip of the 16.3-inch steel outer barrel, we can find a steel AK-74 muzzle brake, the perfect muzzle device for an authentic Cold War-era AK-74. The muzzle brake mounts to realistic 24mm CW male threading, making it compatible with 24mm CW threaded Russian-style suppressors or 14mm CCW male threaded muzzle devices if you remove the 24mm adapter.
To remove the muzzle device, you will need to hold the detent pin in the front sight down to allow the muzzle brake to be unscrewed. The easiest way we found to do this is to hold the pin down with a small flathead screwdriver. To remove the adapter beneath, locate the grub screw and remove it before attempting to unscrew the adapter itself.
The steel front sight of the AV74M mounts directly to its outer barrel and provides an adjustable front post with protective wings to ensure an accidental bump or scrape does not render your sights useless. As part of the classic AK aesthetic, we can find a dummy cleaning rod running parallel to the outer barrel, through the front sight block and gas block. This isn't intended for cleaning an Airsoft barrel, but it is an essential part of the realistic AK look.
Moving further down the outer barrel, we come to the dummy gas block, made from steel with an authentic finish matching the front sight and trunnion block. This connects to the stamped steel gas tube, which meets the ribbed polymer upper handguard via a steel handguard cap.
The handguards are styled after the standard AK-74 polymer type, with linear grooves for additional grip. These handguards match perfectly with the post-Bakelite era AK furniture, such as the side-folding solid stock to complete the modernised AK-74 look.
The lower handguard surrounds the steel outer barrel and is retained by its own handguard cap, also made from steel, which includes a sling point on the left side, ideally for hook-type slings. The steel trunnion block also provides the mounting point for the classic AK tangent rear iron sight, which provides multiple graduations for adjustment and a fine rear sight notch to align with the front sight post. The sight can be adjusted by pressing the buttons on either side of the sight notch and moving the notch back and forth on its base.
Moving rearwards, we come to the receiver, made from stamped steel with realistic Izhmash Arsenal markings throughout. A unique serial number is engraved on the trunnion block just above, with the arrow inside a triangle-style Izhmash marking alongside. In terms of markings, this is probably the best Russian-style AK on the market.
In typical AK style, the first position on the fire selector is fully auto, and the lowermost position is semi-automatic. Each fire mode is denoted by a crisp, stamped, authentic Russian Cyrillic marking, adding realism to this already very realistic AK.
Over on the left side, we can find an AK quick-detach mounting rail, allowing for authentic Russian scopes to be mounted, or Picatinny rail mounts if you prefer a more modern Western optic. The receiver also provides several authentic dummy rivets, all found in the correct place for this AK variant.
The charging handle is of a classic AK format and is machined as part of the steel mock bolt carrier. The bolt carrier and charging handle are authentically coloured black, matching the real AK-74 bolt carrier perfectly. Rack it back to load the first BB and get a taste of that full-travel-bolt goodness, the closest thing you'll get in Airsoft to the real steel AK experience.
The adjustable HOP-up unit is inside the ejection port, easily accessed with the charging handle held back. It makes use of the rotary adjuster design, a fantastic choice in terms of consistency. Compatibility-wise, this unit takes standard GBB/VSR type HOP-up buckings and inner barrels, giving you plenty of upgrade options.
The receiver top cover of the AV74M is also constructed from stamped steel and is the appropriate design for a modern AK, with ribs stamped into the upper surface to provide additional strength while keeping the material thin and lightweight.
The pistol grip of the AV74M is a standard AKM/AK-74 type pistol grip, with diamond checkering on either side to ensure the rifle stays firmly in your grasp in any weather condition. The trigger guard and magazine release can be found just ahead of the pistol grip, and are constructed from steel to provide solid magazine locking and ample rigidity.
The magazine release is placed in the centre of the receiver and is accessible from either side of the rifle, a definite advantage over other designs for left-handed shooters. The magazine retention system of the AK platform is a "rock and lock" motion, requiring you to first index the front "hook" on the magazine inside the receiver, then rock the magazine to engage the catch.
The stock is constructed from polymer and is a realistically slim design to facilitate side-folding functionality, mounted on a steel folding mechanism to complete the flawless full-steel build. To fold the stock to the side, simply press the button on the left side of the receiver, fold the stock to the left side and lock it on its hook.
To unfold the stock, press the button on the butt plate to disengage the hook, after which the stock can be folded into the deployed position and locked. The right side of the stock also features a sling loop, which pairs well with the front sling point on the lower handguard cap, providing appropriate mounting apparatus for a two-point sling, but ideally suited to an AK-47/74 sling.
Internals
Inside, the VFC AV Series GBBRs are bristling with robust steel components, from the bolt carrier to the full trigger group, giving you bomb-proof internals which don't need upgrading. Incredible attention to detail has been paid in how the internal parts look, meaning if you know your way around a real steel AK, you'll be very impressed with the VFC build.
The HOP-up unit is a unique design, known as the EZ-HOP system by VFC. This is effectively an easy-access rotary HOP-up unit, providing a large adjustment dial inside the chamber which is easy to turn, even with gloved fingers. The HOP-up internals are standard GBB/VSR style, meaning aftermarket buckings and nubs are a go!
The highlight of the VFC AV series is its incredible gas efficiency, with one gas fill capable of cycling the action up to 200 times in warmer weather, something no other GBBR can match. Recoil is as hard as the shoulder-shattering WE AK GBBR, and the cyclic rate is far faster, closer to the GHK AK GBBR with its short-travel bolt. Long story short, we're very impressed with this beast!

Further Information
Special Instructions
This is a Gas Blowback Rifle. GBBRs require maintenance and careful handling, and we do not recommend them for new skirmishers. Things to watch out for if this is your first GBBR:
- The HOP-up adjuster for the VFC AV Series GBBR is inside the chamber, accessible with the charging handle held back.
- When the magazine runs dry, you will experience what is known as the "dead man's click". This is by design, intended to replace what happens when a real AK runs dry. To recommence shooting, refill your mag with BBs and you're ready to rock!
- GBBRs need to be cocked before the first shot, just like a GBB pistol. It is important that you do not double-load a GBBR, as this can break the nozzle. We recommend clearing the chamber of BBs with a cleaning rod in the event that you finish firing mid-magazine.
- GBBRs generally use higher-pressure gas than GBB pistols due to the extra weight of the bolt. We recommend Green Gas (NUPROL 2.0, VORSK V6, ASG Ultraair) for general use and Red Gas (NUPROL 3.0, VORSK V8) for cold weather use.
- The faster you shoot a GBBR, the less accurate it will be. This is due to pressure variance as the gas reservoir cools down. Full auto is basically for fun, and these rifles run far better when used in semi-auto mode.
- Like a GBB pistol, GBBR magazines require maintenance. We recommend leaving a small amount of gas inside the magazine when stored and not storing the magazines in a cold or damp environment. Magazine seals and valves will need lubrication and to be kept clear of dust and debris.
The VFC AV series magazine has the ability to be used in normal or "dry fire" modes. The "dry fire" mode will not activate the "stop firing on empty/dead man's click" function and will allow the GBBR to continue to cycle until the gas reservoir is depleted.
To activate "Dry Fire Mode":
- Hold the follower down
- With the follower held down, push the switch on the left side of the mock feed lips forward
To activate "Stop firing on empty/Dead man's click":
- Push the switch on the left side of the mock feed lips rearward.

Joule Charts
Special Instructions
These tables can be used as a reference to see if the BB weight you are using will be over acceptable joule limits at some Airsoft Sites in the UK. To check if the weight can be used chrono your weapon using the BB you intend to use, and then compare it to the chart.
FPS, Power and Joule Limits can vary from site to site, so please get in touch with where you're going to play with in advance to avoid disappointment.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used at Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, with a 350fps limit for Automatic Replicas, 400fps for Semi-Automatic Replicas, and 500fps for Bolt Action Replicas.
Tap the tabs below to open the relevant chart for your replica.
This table should be used for reference and cannot be used to check one weight against another, as the weight of the BB affects the power.
In order to check if the BB can be used with your replica chronograph using the weight you wish to use and then compare it against the table.
Every time you change weights you will need to re-chrono and check against the table. This is not a conversion chart between weights.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, and is the equivalent of 350fps, using 0.20g BB resulting in an upper limit of 1.14j.
