If you have been keeping your eyes open for a high-quality Barrett replica you aren't the only one, but thankfully we now have plenty! The EMG Barrett M107A1 AEG is officially licenced by Barrett Firearms through EMG and has immaculately engraved trademarks as we would expect, and is constructed entirely from metal save for the massive muzzle brake. The M107 is the latest variant of the famous M82A1 which put Barrett Firearms on the map and is currently issued to every Special Forces organisation you can think of.

This is the AEG model of EMG's M107A1 Barrett, and on the inside it is basically an M4, featuring a version 2 gearbox which is fully compatible with aftermarket upgrades and an alloy gear adjustable HOP-up unit. Weighing in at a hefty 6.3kg with all its bits, this will be hard to handle in game but is probably the most skirmishable Barrett on the market, even more so if you upgrade this beast for DMR duty!

Description

The Barrett .50 cal is the big boy, the ultimate man-portable rifle for those who live by the mantra "size matters". The original Barrett, the M82A1 "Light Fifty" was conceived by Ronnie Barrett of Barrett firearms to serve as an anti-material rifle in a similar role to anti-tank rifles of WW1 and WW2. The Barrett's original role was to destroy enemy munitions, Aircraft and gun emplacements out to incredible ranges, thus its massive .50 BMG chambering. The Barrett later found success as an anti-personnel sniper rifle, being authorised for use against armoured targets at extended ranges and often seeing use at checkpoints as a counter to VBIED (Vehicle Bourne Improvised Explosive Device) attacks.

The M107A1 is the more recently revamped version of the M82 and has a newly designed but equally intimidating muzzle brake, a built-in monopod, flip-up iron sights and a polymer cheek riser to keep the venerable M82 design competitive with modern rivals.

Starting at the tip of the 29" (yes, 29 inch) outer barrel we can find the unique Barrett .50 cal muzzle brake which has four ports on each side and is a slimmer design than the original M82 arrowhead brake. This device is constructed from high density polymer to reduce the weight up front and make this Barrett replica a bit easier to handle in game. Make no mistake, this rifle is not for the faint of heart, and will be a challenge to handle on the field but oh so rewarding!

Beneath the muzzle brake, there are no threads, but this is a good thing as there is no Airsoft suppressor on the market that can do the Barrett justice currently. If you look up the real "Turbodyne" suppressor for the Barrett platform you will see that it is the size of a car exhaust! Most suppressors out there will be smaller in diameter than the barrel itself which gives you a sense of how truly massive this thing is. The outer barrel is a fluted design constructed from alloy which matches perfectly with the real Barrett and runs back to meet the alloy receiver, with the ported handguard surrounding it.

The handguard, receiver and stock of the Barrett are constructed as a single piece to give the stability and strength needed for an accurate rifle in a massive calibre. The entire assembly is constructed from alloy with a fine matt finish applied to show through the details and avoid the tell-tale looks of a paint finished replica. The handguard has several ports in the upper and lower section through which the barrel fluting can be seen, separating this from cheaper Barrett replicas and giving this rifle the realistic looks we all expect of an EMG product. On the left side of the handguard, we have our first sling point which is constructed from steel and allows for a two-point sling to be mounted to take the weight off your arms when skirmishing.

The top of the handguard and receiver features a lengthy 20mm Picatinny rail to allow for a massive scope with a front flip up iron sight built in. This sight is designed to pair with the rear iron sight which mounts to the receiver rail and functions as a backup aiming device to the primary optical sight. The rail is long enough to mount practically any size of scope (you will want a big one for this bad boy!) and other accessories such as PEQ laser units if you want more of a special forces look for your Barrett, and is constructed from CNC machined aluminium for a precise shape and flawless mounting of any 20mm Picatinny accessories. The rear iron sight is fully adjustable and functional for skirmishing, though you may get funny looks running a Barrett with irons!

On the bottom of the handguard we have a steel bipod mount which is used to mount the included M60 style bipod, also constructed from steel to guarantee the strength necessary to support such a hefty primary. The bipod is supplied in two parts and can be easily mounted by aligning the screws on the bipod with the threaded holes on the mount, and screwing them in tight. This can be done by hand, but the screws are also slotted to allow you to use a flathead screwdriver. The bipod folds easily by pulling the legs away from the mount, and the leg length is adjustable via the steel buttons on each of the legs, allowing you to set the Barrett up on whatever surface needed, providing extra height when shooting from the prone position so you can clear obstacles and cover. This bipod can be used together with the detachable rear monopod to set the Barrett up in a raised position and make this hefty piece easier to handle in game.

Next up, we reach the magazine well which is positively humongous, as we would expect for a fifty cal. The magazine is inserted similarly to an AK47/74 platform rifle, first indexing at the front and then rocking back to engage with the mag catch at the rear in a "rock and lock" motion. The magazine catch is centrally positioned at the rear of the magwell and is accessible from either side, making reloads easy for left and right-handed shooters. On the left side of the magazine well we are treated to full licenced Barrett Firearms trademarks thanks to EMG, reading: "BEFORE HANDLING RIFLE READ MANUAL FROM: [BARRETT LOGO]" with "BARRETT FIREARMS MANUFACTURING. INC. MURFREESBORO, TN. U.S.A". The serial number follows just below the model number "M107A1".

These markings are a perfect match to the real Barrett M8107A1 and are another aspect which makes this Barrett far better for collectors and realism fans than other versions. To the rear of the magazine well we come to the pistol grip and fire control group which is modelled after the M4/AR15 platform, complete with a 90-degree fire selector and a finger-ridged "A2" pistol grip. The fire selector has white laser engraved markings for each mode, with SAFE to indicate the safe mode and SEMI indicating semi auto and the third unmarked position is the full auto position. Full auto may be a bit silly in a Barrett but allows some crazy in game stuff, like using this cannon as a light machine gun or locking it to semi auto for DMR work.

The charging handle is over on the right side, positioned at the front of the massive mock bolt carrier. The charging handle itself is large and easy to grab whether or not you wear gloves, and is nice and strong thanks to its thick shape and alloy construction. Pulling back the bolt also provides access to the alloy gear adjustable HOP-up unit which is positioned in the middle of the ejection port and can be turned using your fingers easily.

The trigger is a curved "milspec" style trigger matching the real M4/AR15 style, and the trigger guard is curved and slightly larger than the M4/AR15 to allow more space for gloved users. As we move rearwards the stock is relatively featureless, keeping things in line with the utilitarian design of the original Barrett Light Fifty, though we have a steel sling bar on the right side which pairs well with the front sling point to allow for a two-point sling to be mounted, which would be very useful for carting this chonker around a skirmish site!

The stock has built in cheek rest constructed from polymer which is designed to make the real Barrett more comfortable to shoot, and prevent difficulties when shooting in extremely cold weather. At the rear, we have a polymer butt plate which is slightly curved for maximum comfort and an A-frame style lower section which provides a place for you to grip the Barrett when shooting in the prone position. This was designed in to help control the massive recoil from the .50 cal cartridge, and although you won't be experiencing much recoil from an Airsoft Barrett it is still nice to hold when prone given the handguard is so far away.

At the bottom of the stock, we have the mounting apparatus for the included adjustable monopod which is supplied loose in the box. To mount it all you need to do is unscrew the dial at the rear left of the stock and slide the monopod in, paying attention to the location of the indexing groove. With the monopod installed, you can set your position and tighten the dial back down again to secure it in place. The addition of the monopod is a great improvement for handling this massive rifle when prone and makes it easy to set up at the perfect height and avoid fatiguing the user by forcing them to support the weight of the rear of the rifle while aiming down the sights and firing.

To access the battery compartment of this AEG Barrett you will need to split the receiver into two halves by removing the uppermost pin in the butt plate. We recommend gently tapping this pin with a rubber mallet to get it moving as it is very tightly fitted, and using the attached ring to pull it out. This will allow you to slide the entire upper assembly and barrel off the lower/stock assembly, revealing a monumentally large battery compartment and a mini-Tamiya connector inside the stock. You can fit pretty much any Airsoft battery inside this compartment, but as the EMG Barrett does not have a MOSFET and is not set up for 11.1V LiPo use, we suggest a 9.6V NiMH or 7.4V LiPo block battery.

On the inside this AEG Barrett is an M4/AR15 setup, with a version 2 gearbox which is fully compatible with aftermarket upgrade parts and an alloy M4/AR15 gear style HOP-up unit, meaning whatever you want to upgrade you can do it easily and with a wide variety of options to suit any objective. We think this rifle would be best built up as a DMR, given its massive size and real-world role, and having the extra FPS at your disposal may offset the lack of mobility when wielding this gargantuan platform!

If you, like many of us, are drawn to the Barrett M107A1 for its iconic design and awe-inspiring size, this is the one to get if you dream of a Barrett .50 cal DMR. EMG has upped the Airsoft Barrett game with their recent licenced examples, boasting a top quality build, great performance and immaculate Barrett Firearms trademarks, and to make matters all the sweeter, this replica is an AEG with full aftermarket compatibility, meaning you can HPA it, DMR it or do whatever you feel you need. Whether you have the stuff to skirmish such a beast or you just want a room-dominating rifle to mount to the wall of your man cave, the EMG M107A1 AEG is sure to give you an experience you won't forget!
