Looking for a sneaky SMG? The CYMA CM.041 SD6 is a full metal version of the sneaky SMG-5 we all know and love which has been upgraded with CYMA's BLUE Edition internals, making it as rock solid on the inside as it is externally. All of the internal upgrades are focused on reduced friction and lower stress, meaning the BLUE Edition CM.041 SD6 should provide a lifetime of superb performance and is fully compatible with aftermarket upgrades for those who want a bit more. As it comes, the rate of fire and trigger response is spectacular for an AEG without a MOSFET and is a significant step up from other SMG-5 SD6 AEGs on the market.

The real-world version of this submachine gun has been used by US Navy SEALs and UKSF in various special applications and has an iconic look which simply cannot be imitated, as much as the M4 platform tries to (Honey badger *cough*). If you want an SMG which is milsim appropriate with a plethora of internal enhancements built right in, the CM.041 SD6 would be a great tool for the task.

Full description

Description

The SMG-5 has to be one of the most recognisable firearms in recent history and became incredibly popular around the world due to its superb ergonomics, low recoil and impressive accuracy, making it the perfect counter-terrorist primary for direct action missions. The SD6 version leans heavily into the “sneaky beaky” role with its integral suppressor and was the chosen arm of many Special Forces units needing an accurate and quiet primary to take down enemy sentries and guard dogs without alerting reinforcements.

Starting at the tip we can find the iconic SD series suppressor which mounts to the SMG-5 SD6’s proprietary locking mechanism just ahead of the handguard. The CM.041 SD6 does not have a threaded barrel so unfortunately a tracer unit cannot be mounted but tracer units are a bit indiscrete for this type of platform which we think is far better suited to its integral suppressor.

As we reach the front of the handguard we come to the front iron sight which is a flat blade protected by a protective ring built into the alloy front assembly. The protective ring prevents any accidental drops, bumps or scrapes from damaging the delicate front post and rendering your sights useless. On the left side of the front sight assembly, we have the first of the several sling points on this SMG, allowing for plenty of sling options in a variety of configurations. Running back to the receiver along the top of the SMG we have what is known as the “cocking tube” which is an alloy tube within which the cocking handle rides.

The cocking handle can be pulled back and locked up into the “safety notch” to access the adjustable slider HOP-up unit on the right side of the receiver, behind the alloy mock bolt. The HOP-up allows the CM.041 SD6 to be tuned for different weights of ammo and longer range. The slider HOP-up adjuster is derived from the AK platform which is known to be an effective unit which holds its setting well and should give the CM.041 SD6 competitive range, especially for such a short platform.

Below the cocking tube is the handguard which is “ribbed for her pleasure”, i.e ribbed for enhanced grip in all weather conditions. The handguard also serves to reduce felt heat through the massive suppressor of the real thing which runs all the way back to the chamber, and is built as part of the barrel itself. This is another part of the iconic SMG-5 SD6 silhouette and gives the CM.041 SD6 an authentic look. The handguard is held on by two pins, one on each side in the centre of the handguard. With these pins removed, you can slide the handguard off towards the front and access the battery compartment of the CM.041 SD6.

Inside you will find a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you mount your chosen battery. For the CM.041 SD6, we recommend a 7.4V 1300 mAh LiPo battery in nunchuck configuration for easy installation and great performance. You may be able to fit a bigger battery inside but in all likelihood, you will be limited to the nunchuck configuration as the barrel passes through the centre of the battery compartment.

Moving rearwards we arrive at the receiver which follows the iconic SMG-5 format perfectly. The receiver is comprised of two parts, the upper metal section known as the “upper receiver” and the polymer lower section, known as the “trigger pack”. The fire selector is present on either side of the trigger pack and offers 3 modes of fire; safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic, with a 45-degree throw between fire modes. Each fire mode is indicated with the ever recognisable red and white bullet pictograms which first appeared on the “Navy” style SMG-5 trigger pack and how make their way onto most modern platforms in one form or another. Safe is indicated with a crossed-out projectile in white, semi with a single projectile in red and full auto is denoted with several red projectiles.

The grip itself is built into the trigger pack and is an ergonomic design with an enlarged trigger guard built in. This grip has been a subject of a lot of praise, and the shape and style match more modern platforms such as the AR36 and is widely credited with being the inspiration behind the highly popular MOE and MIAD grips for the M4/AR15. The trigger guard allows plenty of space for gloved shooters, and the trigger is a curved design matching the real SMG perfectly.

The magazine release is also ambidextrous, being a paddle-style release positioned just ahead of the trigger guard, making the CM.041 SD6 a fine choice for right or left-handed shooters. There is also a secondary magazine release over on the right side, on the magazine well in a similar position to that of the M4/AR15. This gives you the option of two different magazine release styles, though we prefer the ambidextrous paddle release as the AR style release is a bit further from the grip than on an M4 and can be harder to reach for those with smaller hands.

Running along either side of the receiver we can see a groove which is the track in which the sliding stock indexes, serving both to keep the stock tight into the weapon when retracted, reinforce the receiver and provide tracks for the bolt carrier to move along on the inside of the real thing. At the top, we have a pair of lugs which allow for an SMG-5/G3 claw optics mount to be added if you want to mount a red dot sight or scope to the CM.041 SD6. These lugs are compatible with both low profile and high profile options.

The rear iron sight is located at the back of the receiver and is a rotary drum diopter-style sight, just like the real thing. The sight offers 4 different apertures for aiming, with the wider apertures being ideal for low-light situations and full auto fire, and the finer apertures are great for long-range shots and semi-automatic fire. Changing apertures is easy in any weather conditions thanks to the knurling at the top of the drum, simply turn the sight to the chosen position and it will lock into place under spring tension.

The stock of the CM.041 SD6 is a modern “J” style stock with multiple positions of adjustment, matching the stock issued with the J variant of the SMG-5 which was first issued to Japanese armed police and later became the standard for modern SMG-5s. The J stock improves upon the older SMG-5 sliding stock with its additional adjustment settings and enlarged butt plate with a built-in sling point at the toe. The butt plate is rubberised to provide extra grip for body armour-wearing users and the stock base features a sling slot on the left side. Adjusting the stock is unchanged from the original SMG-5 sliding stock, simply requiring the lever at the end of the stock base to be pressed and the stock extended out to the desired position.

Being a well made full metal SMG, the CM.041 SD6 is already a fantastic platform, but when it comes to internals, the BLUE Edition’s lead extends over its rivals. The version 2 gearbox inside the CM.041 SD6 is reinforced to allow for stronger springs and high rates of fire, and the internal parts have been chosen with a focus on low friction and high speed. The cylinder is finished with copper substrate with the objective of reducing friction between it and the piston, making for improved efficiency and higher cyclic rate. The piston has a full rack of steel teeth, giving it the perfect combination of low weight and high strength.

The cylinder head and piston head are a “silent” set and are constructed from aluminium with a blue surface finish (thus the “BLUE Edition name), reducing the muzzle report and pairing perfectly with the integral suppressor. The piston head and spring guide are both mounted on ball bearings to reduce stress on the piston, main spring and gearbox shell, giving a longer life at this high level of performance. To top it all off, the CM.041 SD6 is equipped with a high torque motor which uses neodymium magnets, giving a superb trigger response in semi-auto despite this platform lacking a MOSFET.

If you are looking for a submachine gun with a stealthy style, you cannot beat an SMG-5 SD variant! And when it comes to SMG-5s, there are none better than CYMA’s at this price point. This BLUE Edition SMG-5 is upgraded with some awesome internals and boasts the rock solid full metal build that has made the CYMA CM.041 series the go-to choice for mid-priced SMG-5 AEGs. Whether you run a special forces-inspired loadout or you just have a thing for the SMG-5 the CM.041 SD6 will serve you well!

Special Instructions

Please avoid 'slapping' the charging handle forward as this may cause damage.

The externals of the replica are metal where they would be on the real world gun. This includes things like the outer barrel, handguard, and receiver. If a real world gun has polymer parts then the gun will still be marked as full metal externals, examples of this would be an M4, where the Stock and Pistol grip are always made from Polymer.
