  • An AK47 that's ready for accessories!

If you have been after an AK, but you cannot go without your modern western accessories, JG has you covered! The Jing Gong AK47 Tactical AEG updates the old rifle with some nifty modern features, including a 20mm Picatinny railed handguard set, ergonomic finger ridged pistol grip and side folding stock. This AK is inspired by those used by PMCs (private military contractors/companies) during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and is very similarly laid out to those used by the British PMCs in the 2008 movie, The Hurt Locker.

Description

For the AK guys who want to deck their rifle out with all the accessories, this one is for you! The JG AK47 Tactical takes the old-school AK47 design and updates it for the 21st century, adding a Picatinny railed handguard set, side-folding tactical stock and an ergonomic finger ridged pistol grip. This AK is modelled after those used by PMCs during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts which were enhanced to allow western accessories to be mounted. These AKs were often equipped with folding stocks to allow for use within vehicles and other confined spaces. This AK would be perfect for a PMC loadout when set up with the included folding vertical foregrip, and a red dot reflex sight on the upper handguard rail.

Starting at the tip of the alloy outer barrel we can find an AK47 style thread protector, which conceals 14mm CCW male threading beneath. The thread protector can be unscrewed by holding down the spring-loaded detent pin in the front sight and turning the thread protector counter clockwise. This allows any threaded accessory for 14mm CCW male threads to be mounted, including tracer units, suppressors, sound amplifiers and flash hiders, depending on your mission requirements and the look you prefer.

The outer barrel itself is finished in a satin black, offering some contrast with the other parts of this AK and realistically signalling the different processes used in the construction of a real AK47 barrel when compared to its other parts. The front sight of the AK47 Tactical is also constructed from alloy with a gloss gunmetal finish and contains a fine front sight post surrounded by protective wings to prevent a bump or scrape from damaging the sight.

As we move rearwards, we come to the dummy gas block, and gas tube. These parts are merely an aesthetic addition and serve no purpose on an AEG other than to provide realistic looks. These parts are constructed from alloy with a hard-wearing gloss gunmetal finish applied, matching the other metal parts of the AEG, as well as its polymer receiver which has a very similar finish. Surrounding the barrel we can find our first sling point, which indexes on the gas block to allow "hook" type slings to be attached. Below the barrel, we can note the steel cleaning rod which is retained by the front sight, gas block and front handguard cap. This is an integral part of the AK47 look and helps give the rifle a realistic silhouette, but should not be used to clean your AEG's inner barrel.

Next up we reach the handguards which are constructed from high-density fibre reinforced polymer, with the smooth but textured finish expected of reinforced polymers and matching real AK47 Tactical handguards perfectly. These handguards have deep linear ribs on their surface to provide exceptional gripping qualities whilst staying comfortable, whether you use gloves or not. These ribs provide a similar aesthetic to Russian AK74 polymer handguards, but with the added benefit of being able to mount 20mm Picatinny railed accessories!

The handguards provide a full length 20mm Picatinny rail at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions, providing room for the included folding vertical grip to be mounted, or any other front grip you choose to mount on your AK. The 12 o'clock rail is perfect for a forward-mounted red dot sight, which allows faster target acquisition and fewer obstructions in your peripheral vision when compared with a conventional mounting position. This rail has a relief cut down the centre to allow for the original AK47 tangent iron sights to be used. On either side of the handguard, we can find two small sections of Picatinny rail which are perfectly positioned to mount a tactical flashlight for some CQB action in the dark, or a PEQ aiming laser if you are going full operator! These rail sections can be removed if they aren't in use, allowing you to save some weight from the front of the rifle if you are running it slick.

To the rear of the handguards, we can find our rear sight/trunnion block. This part houses the rear sight assembly and the mock handguard disassembly lever, found on the right side. Our rear sight is an adjustable AK47 tangent sight with graduations for aiming from close range (indicated by an inverted U) to longer ranges. The AK47 iron sights get a lot of stick in the real world, but they are remarkably functional for Airsofting. The less obscured sight picture provided by open sights means you can keep track of secondary targets, and watch the flight path of your BB to adjust your aim if necessary, all of which is more difficult with the aperture sights found on western rifles such as the M4/AR15. To adjust the sight, simply press the textured button on the left side and move the slider to the position of choice.

Moving on to the receiver we can find an authentically profiled AK47 type 3 receiver, patterned after the earliest AK47 variant to enter mass production. The receiver features weight-reducing relief cuts on either side around the magazine well, matching the real AK47's milled receiver perfectly. The left side of the receiver is relatively plain, just like the real AK, making the rifle more comfortable to sling and reducing the chances of a snag having you tangled up in your gear! To the rear of the weight-reducing cut, we can find mock rivets which are properly positioned to simulate those of the real AK, followed by a steel sling point which can be used on its own with a single point sling, or together with the front sling point on the gas block for a two-point sling setup.

Over on the right side of the AK receiver is where the interesting stuff happens. The first thing we can see is the dummy bolt carrier, authentically coloured silver to match the Type 3 AK47 and is constructed from lightweight alloy. Holding the bolt carrier to the rear will reveal the slider of the adjustable HOP-up unit, which can be moved back and forth to vary the amount of backspin applied to your BB, allowing you to extend your range by tuning it for different ammo weights. The slider of this HOP-up unit is constructed from alloy, minimising flex and ensuring your adjustments are applied consistently.

To the rear of the charging handle, we can find the fire selector lever of the AK47 Tactical which also doubles as a dust cover when in the "safe" position. The fire selector provides 3 modes of fire; safe, fully automatic, and semi-automatic. Contrary to popular belief, the selector is ordered this way as it prevents fully automatic from being selected accidentally and allows for a quick sweep down of the selector to quickly ready the rifle for action. Each fire mode is indicated with an authentic Russian Cyrillic marking recessed into the receiver itself, simulating engraved markings of the real AK.

The magazine release and trigger guard assembly can be found on the bottom of the AK receiver and is accessible for either left or right-handed shooters. The AK magazine insertion is a "rock and lock" style, requiring the front of the magazine to be indexed into the magazine well before the rear is rotated back to lock on the magazine catch. The trigger guard is constructed from steel and is a nice wide design that protects your trigger from accidentally being pressed on gear whilst being open enough to allow for use with gloves. The pistol grip of the AK47 tactical is appropriately updated to match the handguards and stock, with a comfortable finger ridged design allowing for a much more positive grip on this AK than others with a more traditional pistol grip. Each finger ridge includes a fine crackle texture, and the rear of the grip features linear texturing to prevent the AK from slipping from your grasp in wet weather.

The receiver top cover of the AK47 Tactical is constructed from steel and is a smooth design matching the real Type 3 AK47 top cover. This top cover conceals the rifle's battery compartment beneath and can be removed by pressing the textured button at the rear of the top cover. Inside, you will find a mini-Tamiya connector, and a battery tray ideally suited to stick type batteries. For the JG0515MG AK47 Tactical, we recommend either a 7.4V 1450mAh LiPo stick battery or a 9.6V 1600mAh NiMH stick battery.

Following the receiver, we arrive at the rear of the AK47 Tactical, and its side folding stock. This stock uses a similar locking mechanism as the FAL side folding stock. This stock is simple to operate, requiring no button to be pressed to fold and unfold. The stock can be folded by bracing your thumb on the top of the stock, close to the folding mech, with your index finger braced on the bottom of the folding mech. Pushing down will disengage the stock from the folding mech, and allow it to be folded to the right side of the rifle.

This stock design is not intended to be folded during firing, instead, it is intended for quick deployment. The trigger can just about be accessed with the stock folded, though the fire selector is blocked, so we suggest you select your fire mode before folding the stock! The true intention behind the design of this stock is evident when the stock is unfolded; it requires no effort at all to grab the butt plate and fling the stock out into the deployed position in seconds! The stock is constructed from alloy, with a polymer butt plate complete with linear texturing to ensure the stock is easy to shoulder, with or without body armour.

So, if you want a retro classic rifle with all the modern perks of 20mm Picatinny rails, to make Russian milsimmers vomit with your westernised Soviet rifle, none do it quite as well as the JG0515MG! This AK47 Tactical has rock solid build quality with a superb finish, despite its polymer receiver, and would be perfect for those who find a full steel AK a bit too heavy to lug around for a full skirmish day!
