The Cylinder contains your Piston, and is what holds the volume of air created by your Piston operating. There are a couple different types of Cylinder for different applications; some hold a larger volume of air than others, and some have different (or no) porting to control the amount of air that can escape. As a general rule, AEGs with a shorter barrel will want a Cylinder that allows more air to escape and longer barrels will want a Cylinder with a higher volume of air/less porting, but this is really down to experience/personal preference.
