Starting at the front, we cannot help but notice the lengthy integral suppressor which dominates the front end, furnishing this build with the aggressive, Spetsnaz-styling of the real steel VSS Vintorez. The 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel runs throughout the suppressor and right to the tip to enhance accuracy, so if you want to add a tracer unit, it will require home-brewed methods. 

The suppressor features the iconic knurl surface present on the real deal, along with reinforcing ribs and adjustable tangent iron sights on the top. The sights mimic the AK platform closely, with an elevation-adjustable front sight (tool required) and an open tangent rear sight with tool-less elevation adjustment by squeezing the drums on either side, and sliding them back and forth. AK sights might not be the most popular style in real steel, but they're superb for Airsoft, providing an open sight picture for improved situational awareness and improved ability to track and engage moving targets.

The handguard follows aft of the suppressor, made from robust high-density polymer with a textured finish. The handguard is bulged at the bottom, with a lower-profile section at the top, providing a recess to index your support hand thumb and keep the front end of the VSS under control as you sweep between targets. 

Moving rearwards, we reach the receiver, made from aluminium alloy for a cold, realistic feel and to mimic the weight and handling of the real steel. The controls will be familiar to anyone who has used an AK platform before, meaning an easy transition to the VSS if you're accustomed to AK doctrine. 

The ambidextrous magazine release is centrally positioned on the bottom, making it easy to use for both left and right-handed players, with or without gloves, thanks to its extended design. The fire selector is a similar design to the AK but specific to the VSS/AS VAL platform, offering 3 modes of fire: Safe, full auto and semi, in that order.

Inside the trigger guard, real steel VSS fans will take note of the dummy fire mode selector, which provides semi-auto and full-auto mode selection in the real deal. CYMA kept things simple when designing this VSS to keep the gearbox compatible with the TM standard, so unfortunately, this control does nothing. Its visual design is spot on to the real VSS, and we're thankful CYMA included it anyway to complete the realistic external aesthetic.

On the right side of the receiver, you'll find the charging handle and mock bolt carrier, similarly designed to the AK for ease of cross-training in real steel form.  Pulling the charging handle back reveals the slider-type HOP-up adjuster, which will let you add backspin to your BBs, and theoretically improve range and consistency with the right BB weight and setting. This HOP-up unit is a unique design but is compatible with standard AEG inner barrels, HOP-up buckings and HOP-up nubs, great for upgraders planning a beast of a DMR build!

The Receiver also features an SVD-style side rail mount on the left side, designed for Russian-style SVD optics like the PSO-1 and PK-A Kobra, or a 20mm Picatinny rail adapter, if you prefer a Western-style optic. The receiver top cover is stamped from sheet metal, a notably slimmer and shorter design than the AK to keep the aesthetics consistent with the real VSS Vintorez.

At the rear of the receiver, we come to the thumbhole stock, a close replica of the real VSS stock but cast in high-density polymer rather than the layered plywood of the real deal. This stock style combines the pistol grip and stock to improve strength. While less authentic than real wood, the CYMA VSS stock is solid as a rock, with a high-quality textured surface finish and no flex or movement at all. Using polymer over wood is also great for wear and impact resistance, minimising maintenance and letting you skirmish like a madman guilt-free!

The battery compartment is inside the thumbhole stock, accessible with the rubber butt plate removed. To do this, simply pull the rubber butt pad away and push it back into place when done. Inside, you'll find a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you connect your choice of battery. The compartment is ideal for a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo Battery in AK slim stick configuration, but certain stick batteries used for AR-15 buffer tubes will also fit as long as they aren't too wide.
