  • Full metal construction
  • Real wood furniture
  • 6.03mm Steel tightbore inner barrel

If you are after an authentic looking AK74 with solid internals and an electric blowback system the APS AK74 is certainly worth a look! This AK is styled after the original AK74 issued to the Soviet Red Army during the 1970s, seeing service in Afghanistan before being supplemented by the AK74M in the early 1990s.

The AK74 EBB boasts real wood furniture with a smooth and authentic matt varnished finish and majority steel construction for the hefty and authentic feel you can only get from a properly built AK replica. To make things even more realistic, this AK has been worn down in all the key raised edges with a subtle but authentic battle-worn finish which provides a unique look without going over the top. If you like an AK with a well-loved look, this one would be a fine choice!

Description

If you have a thing for antique looking AKs the APS AK74 EBB will be right up your street! This AK is full metal with a majority of steel parts with an authentic battle-worn finish, and has high quality real wood furniture to top it off. The APS AK74 would look as good hanging on the wall with this finish as it would coupled with an authentic Red Army setup or OpFor loadout, though as a wall hanger you will be missing out on some of its best features!

The nice things aren't all on the outside either; inside we are treated to a 6.03mm steel tightbore inner barrel, reinforced gearbox with a finely polished shell for reduced friction, ball bearing piston head and spring guide, aluminium nozzle and a quick change spring system to make power tuning super easy. For a rock solid AK with a uniquely realistic aesthetic, look no further!

Starting at the tip of the 16.3-inch outer barrel we can find the iconic AK74 muzzle brake with its intimidating two port design. This muzzle brake was a bit part of why the real AK74 has such low recoil and is far more controllable in full auto fire than its bigger cousin, the AKM. If you fancy a sneaky Spetsnaz setup you can switch the muzzle brake out for a tracer or suppressor thanks to the 14mm CCW male threading on the steel outer barrel.

To get at these threads you will need to press in the steel detent pin on the front of the front sight block, and unscrew the muzzle brake from its 24mm adapter. With the brake removed you can remove the adapter (take the grub screw out first!) to reveal the common Airsoft 14mm CCW male threading. Suppressor wise, we suggest a PBS-1 or PBS-4 for the authentic Ruskie look!

Following the muzzle device, we come to the front sight block which is constructed from alloy with its raised edges worn to suit the battle-worn look. The front sight post is adjustable using an M4/AR15 front sight adjustment tool, but you can also use small pliers if you are careful. At the base of the front sight post, we have a dummy bayonet lug with a central recess to retain the steel mock cleaning rod. Though this front sight doesn't adjust like a real AK, the drum on either side of the front sight is present, providing the authentic AK74 looks any AK fan demands!

The outer barrel of the APS AK74 is constructed from steel, providing a strong backbone for the rifle and keeping the steel tightbore inner barrel perfectly straight for maximum accuracy potential. Moving rearwards a short distance along the barrel brings us to the gas block, which is constructed from alloy, and the gas tube which is authentically stamped from sheet steel. These parts also have the battle-worn finish, bringing out the details with a subtle but striking departure from the usual factory fresh look of Airsoft AK rifles.

The handguards are mounted between the handguard caps and the receiver, with a stamped steel cap integrated into the gas tube for the upper handguard and an alloy cap with a sling loop built in to retain the lower handguard. The sling loop can be used with any type of sling with sling hooks, though it is ideal for an AK74 style sling, and can be paired with the rear sling point on the left side of the real wood stock. The handguards are held on just like a real AK and can be removed by rotating the handguard retention lever upwards, which is found on the right side of the rear sight/trunnion block.

The handguards themselves are constructed from real wood and have a consistent matt varnished finish across the whole piece, with no blemishes or imperfections to be found. Though the metal is battle-worn and the wood is not, the two work rather well together; mimicking a rifle which has had new furniture fitted to prolong its life but has been through the wars in the past with the signs still showing through. If you want to knarl this wood up a bit and hit it with some sandpaper you will have to have some serious stones to ruin such flawless AK wood! No orangey or super gloss nonsense here, just perfectly formed and finished red wood matching the real AK74 perfectly!

The trunnion block is constructed from alloy and provides the mounting point for the tangent rear iron sight of the AK74. This sight provides an open style notch which can be raised and lowered by pressing the cylindrical button on the left side, and sliding the cylindrical section forwards or backwards. The default position is with the cylindrical section at the rearmost position, giving you a battle sight which is ideal for Airsoft ranges. Open iron sights are often regarded as outdated, but they have the advantage over aperture sights in the field of view they provide, allowing more effective tracking of moving targets and a broader field of view.

Moving rearwards we come to the receiver, which is styled to match the stamped receiver of the real AK74, complete with the correct geometry in all the key places, a Russian AK side rail over on the left side and authentic Cyrillic markings for each fire selector position. Both the receiver and top cover are constructed from steel to provide the proper weight and feel for a realistic AK rifle. The side rail can be used to mount either authentic Russian AK scopes such as the PSO-1 or Kobra, or replicas thereof, but can also accept 20mm Picatinny adapters for AK side rails if you fancy some modern western glass on your classic AK74.

The fire selector is on the right side and is the original AK style design, constructed from steel. The selector offers 3 modes of fire, with safe at the top, full auto in the middle and semi-auto at the lowermost position. Just like a real AK, the selector switch also functions as a dust cover when in the safe position, closing up the gap between the top cover and receiver to prevent dirt and debris ingress.

The trigger guard/magazine release is also constructed from steel, providing a centrally positioned magazine release which is accessible for both left and right-handed shooters and a large trigger guard with ample room for gloved users to access the trigger easily. No need for an enlarged trigger guard on an AK, these things are made for use with gloves! The pistol grip follows just to the rear of the trigger guard and is constructed from polymer with a mock plum bakelite finish, using modern materials to perfectly simulate the visual look of the real AK74 with the benefit of being far stronger than authentic bakelite. The pistol grip is textured to provide additional grip and is set at a comfortable angle which should suit a wide variety of hand sizes and body types.

The alloy mock bolt carrier of the AK74 is located on the right side of the receiver and is correctly finished in black, with the battle-worn finish applied to its raised edges. Pulling the mock bolt carrier back provides access to the slider HOP-up adjuster of the alloy adjustable HOP-up unit. The slider style HOP-up is based on the original TM AK47 design but has long been known for its effectiveness, offering fast adjustments over a wide range. The adjustable HOP-up allows you to set the AK74 up for your ammo weight of choice and adjust the trajectory of your BBs, looking for the flattest possible flight path.

When you fire the APS AK74 you will be treated to a bit more feedback than your typical AK thanks to the electric blowback system. We would be lying if we told you this provides heavy recoil, but what it does do is provide an awesome firing noise and a bit more visual feedback than the average AEG. The blowback system is well designed, and pulling the charging handle back does not put any strain on the piston or blowback linkage which may result in failure in the long term. Particularly when you let rip in full auto with this AK you will feel a nice bit of recoil-like vibration, making for a more exciting firing experience and effectively drowning out the motor and gearbox noise with its clack-clack-clack!

Being a top-wired AK variant, the battery compartment of the APS AK74 is located beneath the receiver top cover. Removing the top cover is super simple, only requiring a press of the button at the rear, after which it can be lifted free. Inside you will see an automotive fuse to protect the wiring, and a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you mount your choice of battery.

For the APS AK74, we recommend a 7.4V 1000mAh LiPo Slim Stick battery for easy fitting and solid performance. You may be able to fit bigger batteries inside but you will have to be careful not to impede the movement of the bolt carrier. We found the easiest way to guarantee this is to position the 7.4V 1000mAh battery at the very front of the receiver, with as much of the battery inside the trunnion block as can fit. If you want to experiment with bigger batteries feel free, but do be careful when reinstalling the top cover that you do not puncture or squash the cells!

Bringing up the rear we have the real wood stock of the AK74, complete with the same fantastic finish applied to the handguards. The stock has the iconic weight-reducing grooves on each side, matching the real AK74 perfectly, and has a steel butt plate to protect the butt of the stock with stamped in ribs for extra grip. On the left side of the stock, we can find the rear sling point which is ideally used with an AK74 replica sling but can be used with most two-point slings for easier carry in game. The sling point provides some flexibility but without being too loose and rattly, giving you the best chance of being able to move swiftly and stealthily without giving yourself away.

On the inside, the APS AK74 has some well chosen internal upgrades focussing on reducing friction and improving efficiency inside the version 3 gearbox, which is 100% compatible with TM version 3 upgrade parts. The nozzle is constructed from aluminium for extra strength, both the spring guide and piston head are equipped with ball bearings to reduce wear and rotational force, the gearbox shell is polished both inside and out to remove any imperfections and the steel gearset runs on steel 8mm slide bearings, resulting in a smooth, unlaboured sounding gearbox.

The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore, giving the platform superb accuracy potential when coupled with its alloy adjustable HOP-up unit. To make things even sweeter, the tightbore inner barrel is constructed from steel, meaning it will maintain its straight form far more effectively than a brass barrel, giving you one less thing to think about upgrading down the line!

If battle-worn AKs are your thing, why spend all that time and effort giving a standard AK the well used look? APS have done the work for you, as well as providing a host of pre-upgraded components and the real wood and majority steel construction every truly authentic AK replica needs. The APS AK74 has the looks and performance to do the job, and its electric blowback system makes it more fun to shoot, and gives it a lovely "clack-clack-clack" sound when fired which is sure to make it stand out on any skirmish site!
