  • Full metal build - Stamped steel body
  • 4-Position fire selector with burst
  • The legend we all love reimagined!

If you're after the MP5 vibe in an ultra-modern package, the G&G Armament TGM R5 SMG-5 GT Advanced AEG is one to watch! A cutting-edge reinterpretation of the classic German SMG design, the TGM R5 keeps the iconic silhouette and adds more ambidextrous features, modern M-LOK and 20mm Picatinny attachment interfaces, a new ergonomic lower receiver design and a flared magazine well for speedy reloads under pressure.

A full metal build with a gorgeous stamped steel receiver, the TGM R5 is also kitted out on the inside and 11.1V LiPo ready, as is the G&G standard. The Version 2 gearbox boasts a reinforced shell, 18:1 ratio steel gears running on 8mm ball bearing bushings, a quick-change spring guide for easy power tuning and the beastly 25K Orange IRFIT high-speed motor delivers the speed for an incredible trigger response and rate of fire. The G&G MOSFET/ETU system further cranks up electrical efficiency and allows the burst mode fire selector position to be programmed for either 3 or 5 round bursts, while providing pre-cocking for when semi-auto speed is a priority.

A radical reinterpretation of one of history's most popular submachine guns, which still serves with law enforcement and military units around the world, G&G had a hard task doing justice to the original design, but we think they smashed it. If the lack of modern attachment interfaces and retro looks turns you off getting a regular SMG-5/MP5, the G&G Armament TGM R5 SMG-5 GT Advanced AEG was made with you in mind!

Description

If you love a classic reinvented, you'll be into the G&G Armament TGM R5 SMG-5 GT Advanced AEG! An incredible quality build on the outside with a stamped steel receiver and fantastic quality aluminium parts, the TGM R5 brings a healthy dose of modernity to the SMG-5/MP5 design, equipped with an M-LOK handguard, 20mm Picatinny top rail, flared magazine well, redesigned trigger pack and plenty of other nifty innovations.

Inside, we're equipped with 11.1V LiPo-ready internals based around a reinforced version 2 gearbox with a quick-change spring system to make power tuning a breeze. Gearbox internals include 18:1 steel gears running on 8mm ball bearing bushings, a polymer piston with a full steel tooth rack, a CNC aluminium piston head and G&G's MOSFET/ETU system, providing programmable burst mode options and precocking for the CQB specialists. Also inside is G&G's epic 25K Orange motor, giving this beast the rate of fire and semi-auto response speed to contend with the very best!

Starting at the tip of the aluminium outer barrel, we have a tri-lug muzzle device with a threaded tip, the iconic muzzle device of the original SMG-5/MP5. Certain tri-lug compatible muzzle devices may fit the tri-lug device directly, though we have tested 5KU QD suppressors and they are not compatible. Removing the thread protector at the tip of the tri-lug reveals 14mm CCW male threading, allowing the most common Airsoft suppressors and tracer units to be mounted with ease.

Moving rearwards, we come to the front sight, inspired by the original SMG-5/MP5 design but with the upper portion of the protective ring opened up to allow more light transmission. This sight aligns well with the rear rotary drum dioptre aperture sight, found on the rear of the receiver, widely known as a fantastically built-in sight system ideal for any scenario.

The rear sight provides four apertures for aiming, intended for different ranges and ambient lighting conditions, which can easily be switched between thanks to its knurled outer surface. To adjust the rear sight for windage, you can loosen the screw in the base on the right side and slide the rear sight back and forth in its base.

Following the front sight, we come to the handguard of the TGM R5, which boasts M-LOK attachment slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, with additional slots at the offset angles in the ideal spot to mount a tactical flashlight. M-LOK can be used to mount M-LOK accessories directly, including tactical flashlights, vertical and angled grips, but can also be fitted with 20mm Picatinny rail adapters in case you want to use the older but more common 20mm accessories. At the rear of the handguard, we also treated to a QD sling socket on either side, ready for the included QD sling swivel or a QD sling setup like the HASTA Adaptive Mission Sling Gen.4.

Above the handguard, we come to the cocking tube of the TGM R5, which is constructed from robust alloy with a lovely flat black finish applied. This cocking tube differs from the OG MP5 in its modern profile and ambidextrous functionality, allowing you to mount the charging handle to either the left or right side, depending on your ergonomic preferences. The charging handle is made from strong, high-density polymer and has a slightly lower profile than the original, helping to reduce snags and promote agility in game. Pulling the cocking handle rearwards allows it to be locked into its "safety notch", which will open the ejection port on the right side of the receiver to allow for HOP-up adjustment.

Running along the top of the receiver, we have a 20mm Picatinny rail, ready for your choice of red dot sight or scope. This rail is 8 slots long, and while shorter than an AR receiver rail, you can still just about fit a red dot sight and magnifier combo if you go for the options with shorter mounts. The rail mounts to the SMG-5/MP5 style receiver lugs and can be replaced with a longer mount or a raised "claw" mount at your discretion.

The lower receiver/trigger pack follows the familiar SMG-5 format, but is significantly enhanced to bring this retro design into line with modern SMGs. The magazine release has been completely redesigned, with the usual centrally positioned paddle being replaced entirely with an ambidextrous push-button mag release mirrored on either side, far more suitable for those with smaller hands than the original SMG-5/MP5. The new mag release buttons both sport deep linear serrations to provide ease of use in wet weather conditions and when wearing thick gloves.

The fire selector has also been considerably enhanced, maintaining a similar shape to the original but with a lower profile design intended to reduce snags and avoid inadvertent mode changes. Like the original, the selector is ambidextrous, located just above the pistol grip for fast access from a firing grip. Each fire mode is indicated with discrete recessed and raised pictograms on the left and a mix of letters and numbers on the right side.

A major advantage of the TGM R5 over standard SMG-5s is its 4-position switch, offering safe, semi-auto, burst mode and full auto with a 45-degree throw between each mode. The burst mode can be programmed for either 3 or 5 rounds via the G&G MOSFET/ETU, allowing you to go for a realistic 3, like certain real MP5s or hit out with 5 rounds to dominate moving targets. Having the extra selector position for burst is a great feature for outdoor gameplay, where improving hit probability at long range is vital, but ammo may disappear too fast when shooting full-auto!

The pistol grip follows just below, an M4/AR-15 inspired design which is more comfortable than the OG pistol grip for most hand sizes; we love the original MP5 grip, but it was definitely intended for large German hands! The grip boasts textured panels on the flanks and linear grooves on the front and rear, ensuring handling stays top-notch in any weather conditions, with or without gloves.

Either side of the receiver features grooves which both serve to reinforce it and allow for the SMG-5 sliding stock to travel within. The TGM R5 uses a more modern stock setup, but these grooves are nonetheless necessary for a realistic SMG-5 look. The ejection port is located on the right side of the stamped steel receiver and provides access to the HOP-up unit when the charging handle is locked to the rear.

The HOP-up design is a slider-style unit, allowing you to tune the level of backspin applied to your BBs and extend the range of the AEG. Applying HOP-up also allows for ammo of heavier weights to be used for outdoor skirmishes, allowing this little SMG to duke it out with the big boys in the woods when needed!

Next up, we come to the stock, adding to the wealth of innovation present in the TGM R5. The stock is known as the Conductive Hinge Folding Stock(CHFS) and is present on G&G's latest ARP9 variants and the FAR series. As you might assume, this means the stock has no external wires to get caught, and the wiring runs hidden inside the hinge itself, meaning no matter how rough you are when folding and unfolding the stock, you will never chop your wires by mistake. This means you can effectively have your cake and eat it too, enjoying the benefits of an ultra-slim snag-free stock while avoiding having to use a battery box or external battery, which would complicate the setup and take up rail space.

To install the battery in the CHFS, all you need to do is press the small tab at the top rear of the butt plate, and you can slide the butt plate down to reveal a mini-Tamiya connector to which you mount your battery of choice. For the ARP9 3.0, we recommend an 11.1V 600mAh PDW Stick Battery for the best combination of an easy fit and performance.

The stock design itself is a side-folding slimline stock, similar in style to the latest MPX and MCX slimline stocks, but with a bigger butt plate to facilitate the built-in battery compartment. The button to fold the stock is on the left side, and to redeploy it, there are no buttons; simply flip it back into place!

The stock also features 3 QD sling sockets; one on the base of the stock, and one on either side at the rear. The TGM R5 comes with a QD sling swivel included, meaning you are ready to go if you like a single-point sling, but if you prefer a two-point setup, we recommend grabbing a HASTA Adaptive Mission Sling Gen.4 and making use of the QD sockets on the handguard.

Inside, the TGM R5 is kitted out with G&G's G2 Gen.2 gearbox, featuring a reinforced shell, a quick-change spring system. 18:1 steel gears running on 8mm ball bearing bushings, a CNC aluminium piston head and a polymer piston with a full steel tooth rack. The pre-installed motor is the legendary G&G IRFIT Orange high-speed motor, the same motor installed in the current generation of ARP9 platforms, offering an epic 25,000 revolutions per minute, which translates to an incredible rate of fire and super-snappy trigger response, made even better thanks to the TGM R5 being 11.1V LiPo ready straight out of the box.

G&G's G2 MOSFET/ETU system allows you to program the burst mode position for either 3 or 5 rounds and also provides pre-cocking, which sets the piston at the rear of its cycle before each shot to provide a practically instantaneous response in semi-automatic mode. While this ETU may not have a massive range of programmable modes, G&G has provided exactly what a performance-oriented skirmisher needs to get the job done without overcomplicating things.

If your collection lacks an SMG-5/MP5 but you're addicted to modern ergonomics, the G&G TGM R5 SMG-5 GT Advanced AEG is the one to go for! A stunning shooter with a high-quality build and a unique yet familiar aesthetic, the TGM R5 is ready to tangle with AR-9s, Stribogs, MPXs and any other modern SMG and come out on top!
