Starting at the front, we can find the PTS Griffin GP5 suppressor, constructed from CNC 6000 series aluminium with realistic Griffin Armament markings. This is a superb quality suppressor, far better than most found pre-installed on other M4SD-style rifles and blends perfectly with the other licensed PTS Griffin furniture. The inner barrel runs partially through the suppressor but doesn't extend to the tip, giving you a great balance of extra barrel length with a duller muzzle report when fired.

Next up, we reach the handguard which is a perfect replica of the real steel Griffin SR (Suppressor Ready) handguard, boasting Griffin Armament trademarks and flawless machining throughout. M-LOK negative space attachment slots are available at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions with extra slots at the offset angles, giving you extra versatility in where you place your M-LOK accessories.

The SR handguard is slightly wider in profile than most, designed to allow suppressors to be mounted inside while still providing full functionality of the M-LOK slots. Running along the top of the SR handguard, we have a 20mm Picatinny rail which mates seamlessly with the receiver rail, providing plenty of space for optical sights or other 20mm Picatinny accessories.

The receiver should be a familiar sight to anyone who has handled an M4/AR-15 platform before, constructed from alloy and matching an M4-style receiver perfectly. This includes the reinforced front pinhole, mil-spec flat trigger guard, magazine release fence and low profile charging handle latch. The magazine release is on the right side of the magazine well, a push-through design just like a standard M4/AR-15 AEG with a textured surface for optimal traction.

The controls are conventionally laid out for an M4/AR-15 replica, with the fire selector positioned just above the pistol grip on the left side, well within reach of the shooter's thumb when the rifle is held in a firing grip. The selector offers 3 modes in a SAFE-SEMI-AUTO layout with a 90-degree throw between each selector position.

At the top rear of the receiver, we can find the charging handle, and as mentioned, it features the milspec low-profile charging handle latch to reduce snagging potential. Pulling the charging handle back will open the dust cover and retract the mock bolt, revealing the alloy rotary HOP-up unit on the right side. The HOP-up allows you to adjust the amount of backspin applied to your projectiles and tune the MK1 M4SD for different ammo weights, looking for the flattest possible trajectory. When you've completed your adjustments, you can slap the "ping pong paddle" style bolt release catch on the left side of the receiver to drop the mock bolt with a satisfying metal-on-metal "clank".

The pistol grip is an A1 type, with checkering on both sides to provide a grippy surface and lacking the finger groove found on A2 grips, which some find less comfortable. The grip has a heat sink motor base plate, allowing the AEG's motor to cool between extended strings of fire. This is the only aspect in which the PTS MK1 M4SD deviates from the real steel, but it was necessary for optimal motor engagement with the gearbox, which wouldn't be possible with the more vertical Griffin "A3" grip used on the real steel.

At the rear, we have the prolific M4/AR-15 buffer tube, constructed from alloy and offering 6 adjustment positions for the pre-installed Griffin ECS™ stock. The adjustment lever of the stock is on the bottom; a low-profile design intended to reduce equipment snags, a considerable improvement over the older AR stock designs. A low-profile QD sling socket is present on either side in a unique "plate" format which considerably reduces weight. The butt plate is rubberised and serrated for optimal wet-weather traction, set at a slight angle to suit modern shooting stances and body armour users.

The battery compartment of the MK1 M4SD is inside the buffer tube, accessible with the stock removed. To achieve this, simply pull the adjustment lever outwards and slide the stock off the rear of the buffer tube. Inside, you'll find a Deans battery connector to which you mount your choice of battery. For the MK1 M4SD, we recommend a 7.4V 1450mAh LiPo in stick configuration for an easy fit and top-notch performance.

Inside, the MK1 M4SD is equipped with the common version 2 gearbox, meaning upgrade opportunities are practically unlimited for this beast. As you'll receive it, the gearbox is rocking 18:1 steel gears running on 8mm ball bearing bushings, a CNC aluminium double O-ring cylinder head, a stainless steel cylinder, a reinforced Nylon piston with an MIM steel tooth rack and an integrated MOSFET/ETU. The MOSFET is not programmable but does enhance trigger response significantly, along with preventing trigger lockups when shooting semi-auto at a rapid pace.
