Description
This rifle looks incredible! Its cool design matches modern rifle designs with features like a waffle magwell, a fabric handguard and suppressor shroud, and a UBR-inspired stock system. Plus, it's great for Airsoft gameplay too. With its preinstalled EFCS MOSFET/ETU, you can use the Ares EFCS programming box (not included) to control and programme your replica in a variety of ways that are sure to take your gameplay to a whole new level.
Starting at the front of the ASTRA XI Shadow, we can find a pre-installed suppressor with a shroud over it, which provides a sneaky, special ops style. The outer barrel is constructed from alloy and has 14mm CW threading at the tip. For other common muzzle devices, you'll need a 14mm CW to 14mm CCW adapter to mount the most common tracer units, suppressors and alternative flash hiders. Please note, the inner barrel goes all the way to the tip of the suppressor, so a barrel extension will be needed for shorter muzzle devices or tracer units.
Immediately behind the steel muzzle device, we come to the aluminium handguard, measuring 12 inches in total length. The handguard boasts M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions with a 20mm Picatinny rail up top, ready for a PEQ laser, tactical flashlight or anything else you need to mount to complete the mission at hand. There is also another fabric shroud at the rear of the handguard, further adding to the tactical style.
The upper 20mm Picatinny rail runs back to meet the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing for optical sights of practically any length to be mounted. Also present on the handguard are a pair of non-functional QD sling sockets, purely there for aesthetic purposes, and they bear no actual function or use.
On the top rail, we are treated to a set of flip-up aperture iron sights which can be deployed by hand, and are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation. The rear sight is equipped with two apertures for aiming in different environments; one with a wide hole for low-light situations and full auto, and a second with a smaller aperture for semi-automatic fire in good lighting conditions.
Following that, we come to the receiver, boasting a unique Ares design. It features a waffle texture on the magazine well to provide extra grip and a dummy forward assist for extra realism points. The dust cover, found on the right side, is constructed from high-density polymer to match modern weight-reduced dust covers found on the latest modern assault rifles, such as the Daniel Defense's DDMK18.
The charging handle is located at the top rear of the receiver and is a low-profile design to reduce snagging and improve battlefield agility. Pulling the charging handle back will pop open the dust cover and lock the mock bolt carrier to the rear, allowing access to the rotary HOP-up unit. The HOP-up allows you to tune the ASTRA IV for your chosen BB weight. Once your adjustment is complete, slap the "ping pong paddle" bolt catch on the left side or the secondary bolt catch on the right side to send the mock bolt home with a satisfying "clank".
The fire selector switch is ambidextrous, located on both sides of the receiver, just above the pistol grip, ideal for all shooters. The selector provides 3 modes of fire: safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic, with a 90-degree throw between each mode. Being equipped with the Ares EFCS, the fire controls of the ASTRA IV Shadow can also be programmed for burst mode and semi-auto only using the Ares EFCS programming box (available separately).
The magazine release button is also ambidextrous, positioned on the left and right sides of the magazine well. The mag release works just like a standard M4/AR-15 push-button release. The buttons are surrounded by raised protrusions in the receiver, known as the "magazine release fence". This is so the mag release can't accidentally be pressed as the ASTRA IV Shadow rubs against your gear.
The pistol grip of this rifle boasts a unique design. With ergonomics and grip in mind, the grip has texturing on either side so that it sits securely in your palm. The front of the grip also has finger ridges, improving the gripping quality and comfort whilst holding it. The trigger guard is built into the receiver to improve strength and is enlarged to allow for gloved users. The trigger offers a flat serrated front surface with a short finger ledge, ideal for rapid double taps.
Following the receiver, we come to the AR buffer tube. This is not a standard stock setup; it is inspired by a real steel stock called the UBR. It provides a solid, non-moving cheek weld regardless of the stock's extended length. It also has a low-profile adjustment lever that won't get snagged whilst traversing the battlefield. The stock has 5 different length settings, making it suitable for any loadout with or without body armour.
The battery compartment is located within the stock tube. To access it, first remove the sliding part of the stock by pushing the lever in and sliding it off. Then, untwist the cap on the end of the tube. Once removed, you will have access to the Deans battery connector. For this AEG, we recommend a 7.4v 1300mAh 25C LiPo Stick Battery.
Inside, the ASTRA XI Shadow is equipped with the Ares EFCS gearbox, including the EFCS programmable MOSFET, 18:1 ratio steel gears and a quick-change spring system for easy power tuning. The gearbox itself is based on the venerable version 2, though we suggest consulting a tech before buying upgrade parts, as some bits inside are proprietary. The pre-installed motor is a high-torque example, providing a snappy trigger response ideal for exchanging fire in CQB settings.
The EFCS MOSFET allows the fire modes to be reprogrammed for burst modes and semi-auto only using the Ares EFCS programmer (available separately) and also features a low-voltage cut-off function, protecting your battery from being damaged if the voltage drops too low.
This rifle would make a great DMR-style rifle, with its tactical looks, long length with the suppressor, and UBR-inspired stock, it makes the perfect example of an Airsoft gun that is practically begging to become the designated marksman rifle. Not to forget the EFCS gearbox, with its programmable MOSFET and solid internals, you're sure to have a whole lot of fun with this AEG!

Special Instructions
These table can be used as a reference to see if the BB weight you are using will be over acceptable Joulage limits at some Airsoft Sites in the UK. To check if the weight can be used chrono your weapon using the BB you intend to use, and then compare it to the chart.
FPS, Power and Joule Limits can vary from site to site, so please get in touch with where you're going to play with in advance to avoid disappointment.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, with a 350fps limit for Automatic Replicas, 400fps for Semi-Automatic Replicas, and 500fps for Bolt Action Replicas.
Tap the tabs below to open the relevant chart for your replica.
This table should be used for reference, and cannot be used to check one weight against another, as the weight of the BB affects the power.
In order to check if the BB can be used with your replica chronograph using the weight you wish to use and then compare it against the table.
Every time you change weights you will need to re-chrono and check against the table. This is not a conversion chart between weights.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, and is the equivalent of 350fps, using 0.20g BB resulting in an upper limit of 1.14j.
