We have all been in this position, you want a new gun, you don't want an M4 this time, but you have already invested in a full loadout of M4 magazines. Maybe you're new, but don't want to look like you are new, so you want something a little more unique? Why not consider a SCAR? Introducing the BY-803 from Double Bell, a close reproduction of the generation 2 prototype SCAR light. This AEG sports full metal construction, a multi-function folding retractable stock, and plenty of 20mm Picatinny rail space for mounting optics and other mission-essential equipment!

    Full description

    Description

The BY-803 SCAR-L is a close reproduction of the generation 2 prototype SCAR rifle, entered into the SCAR trials for a next-generation Special Forces Capable Assault Rifle in early 2004. Designated "MK16", The rifle ended up in limited service with US Special forces, the French Military, and other special forces groups around the world, and was a big hit on the US civilian market.

Starting at the tip of the outer barrel we can find a steel birdcage flash hider, which attaches to male 14mm CCW threads at the tip of the alloy outer barrel. This means if you want to go full Special Forces with your SCAR, you have the option to mount a tracer or suppressor, or an alternative flash hider if you fancy a different look. Immediately following the flash hider we get to the dummy gas block, to which mounts the front flip-up iron sight. The gas block is faithfully designed, looking almost identical to the real SCAR gas block, and the front sight mounts into a dovetail at the top of the gas block but can easily be removed if you prefer to mount a flip-up sight on the receiver rail instead. The front sight can be deployed by pushing the button on the left side of the gas block, which allows the sight to be flipped up and locks it in the deployed position. To fold the sight, simply press the same button and the sight can be folded back down. The front sight is a protected design, with a full hood preventing the adjustable AR15 style front sight blade from being damaged should the rifle take a bump or scrape.

Following our front sight, we can find the first of several sling points on the BY-803. This comes in the form of two loops, one on either side, positioned at the front of the monolithic upper receiver and constructed from alloy for additional strength. These sling points are compatible with "hook" type slings and are functional for either left or right-handed shooters. The upper receiver of the BY-803 is machined from a single piece of Aluminium, similarly to the real SCAR, and provides a rock-solid base for any optical sight you wish to mount. The rail is long enough that you can install a Red dot sight, magnifier, and PEQ box in true Special Forces style, with plenty of room to spare! At the rear of the upper rail we can find the rear iron sight, which is adjustable for both windage and elevation without using tools, and comes with a fine yet easy to acquire aperture for aiming. At the rear of the upper receiver, we can also find more sling points! This time a flat loop on the left side and a small loop on the right. If you intend to use the smaller loop on the right side, we recommend you put a key ring through it first to enable larger "hook" style slings to mount.

At either side of the BY-803 upper receiver, we are provided with 20mm Picatinny rails which are great for mounting any 20mm Picatinny accessory that you didn't fit on your top rail, such as a tactical flashlight. These rails are very precisely machined but can be quite sharp to hold, so we recommend using gloves or Picatinny rail covers to keep those hands baby soft. At the bottom of the handguard section, we are treated to yet another Picatinny rail, which makes a great home for a vertical or angled foregrip, or even a bipod should you choose to take this SCAR in a DMR direction!

Moving rearwards, we come to the BY-803's charging handle, which is installed on the right side of the AEG but can be reversed to the left side when the AEG is disassembled. When the charging handle is pulled, the mock bolt carrier retracts and travels a realistic length, and when released makes a satisfying metal on metal "clank". This provides no function but does reveal our rotary adjustable HOP unit, which is located within the ejection port and can be adjusted in order to provide the appropriate amount of backspin to your chosen BB weight, extending your range when set correctly. The rotary unit design is one of the best out there, and provides fine adjustments, holding its setting well even under the vibration of firing.

The lower receiver of the BY-803 is appropriate to the SCAR-L generation 2 prototype, and is a simple low profile slab-sided design, making this rifle convenient to sling and reducing the chances of your controls getting snagged on gear. The controls are similar to an AR15, but with some notable improvements. Firstly, the fire selector lever is present on either side, and provides a 45 degree throw between fire modes which speeds up manipulation of the AEG, allowing you to get from safe to your chosen mode more easily and with less movement. The magazine release is ambidextrous, allowing left or right-handed shooters to operate the BY-803 with ease. The trigger guard is integrated into the lower receiver and is enlarged to allow gloved use and faster access to the trigger. And finally, the magazine well has a slight flair to it which helps guide the magazine in, speeding up your reload. The pistol grip of the BY-803 is a standard M4/AR15 finger ridged A2 grip with checkering on either side and the rear, but can be exchanged for an aftermarket M4/AR15 AEG pistol grip of your choice, should you have a preferred grip style.

As we arrive at the rear of the rifle, we come to one of its finest features. The multi-function retractable/foldable stock. This stock is known as the "Ugg boot", due to its similarity in looks to what can loosely be described as footwear. If you ask us, Ugg boots should be known as "SCAR stock shoes" since the stock predates the boot! As mentioned, this stock provides a whole lot of functionality and has inspired many other stock designs since its inception. The stock can be extended to any of 4 positions depending on body type, features an adjustable cheek riser which offers two positions and can also be folded and locked to the right side for storage, transportation, or engagements at kissing distance. The stock folding button is located on the left side of the stock, close to the hinge, with the cheek riser adjustment button sitting just above. The battery compartment of the BY-803 is beneath the cheek riser, and after holding the cheek riser adjustment button-down, the riser can be lifted up, revealing a Mini-Tamiya connector. This compartment can fit a 1300 mAh 7.4V LiPo inside but can take larger batteries if the stock is left extended during use. The control to extend/retract the stock can be found close to the rubber butt plate and can be pushed down with the thumb to quickly adjust. Being constructed from rubber as opposed to polymer allows the SCAR butt plate to grip your shoulder, making the AEG easy to shoulder and preventing the stock from shifting during aiming.

The SCAR platform is one of the more underrated out there and offers some serious functionality in a full metal package, sporting features an M4 can only dream about! For the veteran player who wants a change or the new player who wants something unique looking that can still avail itself of common and affordable M4/AR15 magazines and Version 2 gearbox internal parts, the BY-803 SCAR-L is the obvious choice!

    Further Information

    Special Instructions

We recommend a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo (stick or nunchuck) for a good fit in the battery compartment of the BY-803. It can fit larger batteries inside, but the stock will be restricted in how far it can be retracted, i.e a 1450mAh will fit, but the stock can only be set to position 3 at the shortest.

Due to the proximity of the battery wires to the stock folding mechanism, we recommend exercising caution when folding/retracting the stock/cheek riser to avoid damaging the wires.
