Easily one of the most iconic sniper rifles to grace the field, now in a more compact 'short' size. With hefty full metal construction the EMG Barrett M82A1 is officially licenced by Barrett Firearms and has immaculately CNC engraved trademarks as we would expect from a rifle of this quality.

This version of the Barrett clocks in at a beastly 5.8KG, even at its somewhat shorter size, but if you like a challenge you have a rotary adjustable HOP-up unit at your disposal and 300FPS straight out of the box, with this variant being an AEG that does full auto! Meaning you can wield the .50 cal like a DMR and put those other snipers and marksmen firmly in their place!

Full description

Description

Conceived by Ronnie Barrett of Barrett firearms to serve as an anti-material rifle in a similar role to anti-tank rifles of WW1 and WW2, the .50 is an iconic long-range rifle, with this variant being the 'shorter' 20 inch barrelled version. Barrett's original role was to destroy enemy munitions, Aircraft and gun emplacements out to incredible ranges, thus its massive .50 BMG chambering. The Barrett later found success as an anti-personnel sniper rifle, being authorised for use against armoured targets at extended ranges and often seeing use at checkpoints as a counter to VBIED (Vehicle Bourne Improvised Explosive Device) attacks.

It is, of course, a well known fact that the M82 is the undisputed top dog in the world of video game sniper rifles and if you don't recognise the iconic outline of the M82 we have to ask do you even like guns? With its titanic size and fear-inducing arrowhead muzzle brake, M60-style bipod and folding carry handle give the M82A1 its recognisable shape, leaving onlookers in no doubt that this is anything but a Barrett.

Being the smaller variant we begin at the tip of the 20" outer barrel and at first, you may think that the shorter barrel takes away from the overall feel of the Barrett. However, the trade-off is an easy one as this variant is comparatively light and more manoeuvrable, as well as sporting auto electric internals, allowing you to fire full auto DMR! With a .50 cal!

Unique to the Barrett .50 cal is the iconic muzzle brake, which has two ports on either side and is shaped like an arrowhead. This device, much like the rest of the rifle is constructed from to reduce the weight up front and make this Barrett replica a bit easier to handle during a skirmish. Make no mistake, this rifle is not for the faint of heart, and will be a challenge to handle on the field but oh so rewarding!

Beneath the muzzle brake, there are no threads, but this is a good thing as there is no Airsoft suppressor on the market that can do the Barrett M82A1 justice currently. If you look up the real "Turbodyne" suppressor for the Barrett platform you will see that it is the size of a car exhaust! Most suppressors out there will be smaller in diameter than the barrel itself which gives you a sense of how truly immense this thing is. The outer barrel is a fluted design constructed from alloy which matches perfectly with the real Barrett and runs back to meet the alloy receiver where it is anchored in place using a locking lug system and grub screw.

The handguard, receiver and stock of the Barrett are constructed as a single piece to give the stability and strength needed for an accurate rifle in a massive calibre. The entire assembly is constructed from alloy finish. On the left side of the handguard we have our first sling point which is constructed from steel and allows for a two-point sling to be mounted to take the weight off your arms when skirmishing, moving from sniper nest to sniper nest.

Moving on, we reach the handguard and receiver, which feature a lengthy 20mm Picatinny rail, that runs along the length to above handguard all the way to above the fire select. This allows for a massive scope, exactly what you want to complete this beast of a gun. The rail is long enough to mount other accessories such as PEQ laser units if you want more of a special forces look for your Barrett, and is constructed from CNC machined aluminium for a precise shape and flawless mounting of any 20mm Picatinny accessories. This rail matches the later version of the M82A1 which replaced the original's raised optics rail, allowing for large thermal optics to be mounted in front of a normal riflescope for night operations.

On the bottom of the handguard we have a steel bipod mount which is used to mount the included M60 style bipod, also constructed from steel to guarantee the strength necessary to support such a hefty primary. The bipod is supplied in two parts and can be easily mounted by aligning the screws on the bipod with the threaded holes on the mount, and screwing them in tight. This can be done by hand, but the screws are also slotted to allow you to use a flat head screwdriver. The bipod folds easily by pulling the legs away from the mount, and the leg length is adjustable via the steel buttons on each of the legs, allowing you to set the Barrett up on whatever surface needed, providing extra height when shooting from the prone position so you can clear obstacles and cover.

If you're a fan over imposing oversized magazines , the Barrett .50 cal has got you covered. The magazine well which is positively humongous, as we would expect for a fifty cal. The magazine is inserted similarly to an AK47/74 platform rifle, first indexing at the front and then rocking back to engage with the mag catch at the rear in a "rock and lock" motion. The magazine catch is centrally positioned at the rear of the magwell and is accessible from either side, making reloads easy for left and right-handed shooters. On the left side of the magazine well we are treated to full licenced Barrett Firearms trademarks thanks to EMG, reading: "BEFORE HANDLING RIFLE READ MANUAL FROM: [BARRET LOGO]" with "BARRETT FIREARMS MANUFACTURING. INC. MURFREESBORO, TN. U.S.A". The serial number follows just below the model number "82A1".

These markings are a perfect match to the real Barrett M82 and are another aspect which makes this Barrett far better for collectors and realism fans than other versions. To the rear of the magazine well we come to the pistol grip and fire control group which is modelled after the M4/AR15 platform, complete with a 90-degree fire selector and a finger-ridged "A2" pistol grip. The fire selector has white laser engraved markings for each mode, with SAFE to indicate the safe mode and SEMI indicating semi automatic. The final setting as the real world rifle does not have a full auto function, but this a heavily modified Airsoft DMR version, of course! This allows for full auto fire on a .50 cal - truly a rarity. This Barrett is unfortunately not semi-auto but this also allows it to be classed as a sniper rifle for gameplay purposes and allows for a far higher FPS than AEG versions.

The charging handle is over on the right side and while on this AEG variant, it does not perform any function in terms of Airsoft gameplay, it is a worthwhile addition for the sake of realism, as well as concealing the HOP unit. The charging handle itself is large and easy to grab whether or not you wear gloves, and is nice and strong thanks to its thick shape and alloy construction. Pulling back the bolt also provides access to the rotary adjustable HOP-up unit which is positioned at the front of the chamber and can be turned using your fingers or a tool. The HOP-up has a very wide range of adjustment, and its use of the rotary style adjuster means it more directly applies pressure to the HOP-up rubber to reduce side-to-side shot deviation down range.

The trigger is a curved "milspec" style trigger matching the real M4/AR15 style, and the trigger guard is curved and slightly larger than the M4/AR15 to allow more space for gloved users. As we move rearwards the stock is relatively featureless, keeping things in line with the utilitarian design of the original Barrett Light Fifty, though we have a steel sling bar on the right side which pairs well with the front sling point to allow for a two-point sling to be mounted, which would be very useful for carting this chonker around a skirmish site!

The stock has a polymer butt plate which is slightly curved for maximum comfort and an A-frame style lower section which provides a place for you to grip the Barrett when shooting in the prone position. This was designed in to help control the massive recoil from the .50 cal cartridge, and although you won't be experiencing much recoil from an Airsoft Barrett it is still nice to hold when prone given the handguard is so far away.

If you've always wanted to get Barrett M82A1, but we're worried about its immense length, this slightly shorter 20 inch variant might be one to consider, if you are looking for something a little shorter and more manoeuvrable. EMG have set the bar for .50 cals with this licensed variant, with official CNC trademark engravings, as well as a well built and hefty, full steel and alloy build. Another advantage of this model is that it is electrically powered and firing at 300 FPS, which means that you can use this full-auto as a DMR. Whether you have the stuff to skirmish such a beast or you just want a room-dominating rifle to mount to the wall of your man cave, the EMG M82A1 is without equal amongst the larger Airsoft rifles.
