Description

If you need a close-quarters companion to deal with threats at smelly breath range, you're in good hands with the Evolution Reaper XS EMR AR-9 PDW AEG; ETS II ETU! Rocking a receiver made from Evolution's proprietary Carbontech™ engineering polymer, a CNC aluminium handguard and an alloy/steel PDW stock, the Reaper XS AR-9 PDW is uniquely compact, with a strong yet lightweight build which won't slow you down when it counts.

Inside, the Reaper XS EMR is well equipped, rocking internals based around the prolific version 2 gearbox with full Tokyo Marui internal parts compatibility. Inside, we are equipped with 18:1 steel gears, a polymer piston with a steel tooth rack, a sector gear delayer, a quick change spring guide and the Evolution ETS II programmable MOSFET to top it off. Also inside is a 6.01mm tightbore inner barrel, offering superb accuracy with high-quality ammo and a boost in FPS from the same strength spring.

The ETS II is Evolution's own ETU/MOSFET, designed and manufactured in Italy, and offering a massive range of programmable fire mode options along with quality-of-life features other ETUs lack. Fire mode options include 3 or 5-round burst, binary trigger, sniper delay, AUG mode and ramping full-auto; giving you the standard ETU options with extra specialised features, resulting in a highly versatile platform suitable for a range of battlefield roles!

Starting at the front end, we can find a birdcage flash hider mounted to the 4.5-inch alloy outer barrel. The outer barrel's threading is 14mm CCW male, meaning you can swap out the birdcage for a suppressor, tracer unit or alternative flash hider design of your choice. The threading is recessed into the handguard by approximately 2cm, so we recommend adding a barrel extension to use wider suppressor-style tracer units. If you're after a compact tracer unit which fits straight on, we recommend the EShooter Flare M!

The CNC aluminium handguard is equipped with M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, ready for any M-LOK accessories to be directly mounted. M-LOK is one of the latest accessory interfaces to hit the market, both for real steel and Airsoft, allowing you to fit M-LOK vertical or angled grips directly, or mount 20mm Picatinny rail adapters for M-LOK to make use of 20mm Picatinny grips, flashlights and laser units. The set includes a stubby vertical foregrip for M-LOK, getting you off the mark with a free accessory which both looks great and is very comfortable.

With a 20mm Picatinny attachment rail at the 12 o'clock position, the handguard also provides a mounting point for the included flip-up aperture iron sights, which can either be left flipped down or removed entirely if you prefer to use a red dot sight or scope. The irons can be raised and lowered by hand, with no need to press buttons or fiddle with catches, and are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation.

The handguard's upper Picatinny rail meets the 20mm rail on the receiver seamlessly, allowing large optical sights and red dot sight + magnifier combos the extra space they need to be mounted easily. The receiver itself is constructed from fibre-reinforced high-density polymer with a beautiful matte finish and a high-quality textured feel, keeping the weight low and the strength high, with added scratch resistance so the odd mid-skirmish bump or scrape doesn't mean your pride and joy looks scruffy.

Regarding the controls, this SMG is patterned after the M4/AR-15 platform, offering comfortable and well-placed controls that are easy to master for almost any user. The fire selector switch can be found on the left side of the receiver, just above the pistol grip, offering 3 modes of fire: SAFE, SEMI-AUTOMATIC and FULL AUTO, with a 90-degree throw between each mode.

The magazine release is located centrally, just behind the magazine well, making it easy to operate for both left and right-handed shooters. This magazine release is definitely not one you will struggle to find in the heat of the moment; its prominent design and serrated contact surface mean fast reloads are a breeze, even with the adrenaline pumping!

The pistol grip of the Reaper XS EMR boasts a refined grip angle for greater comfort when shooting with the stock fully collapsed and in more modern shooting stances. Each flank of the pistol grip includes fine crackle texturing, with additional linear texture on the front and back straps for perfect wet weather handling. The trigger is a "flat" trigger with a short finger ledge and textured front, making it ideal for pumping out rapid semi-automatic shots. The trigger guard is built into the receiver, improving strength and allowing gloved fingers easier access to the trigger than the standard AR flat trigger guard.

The charging handle can be found at the top rear of the receiver and features an extended latch which protrudes on the left side for fast access and one-handed operation. When the charging handle is pulled, the mock bolt carrier will retract and reveal the rotary HOP-up unit within the mock ejection port. The rotary HOP-up unit is the latest design for the M4/AR-15 platform and improves on the older "gear" unit with finer increments of adjustment and improved ability to hold its setting under the vibrations of full-auto fire.

The HOP-up allows the user to adjust the amount of backspin applied to the BB and tune it to provide optimum range and a stable flight path with various weights of BBs. For this SMG, we recommend 0.25g for the best combination of projectile speed, wind resistance, and range. When you have adjusted your HOP-up, you can release the charging handle to close the ejection port and flip up the dust cover to keep your internals protected from the elements.

Following the receiver, we come to the collapsible PDW stock, which is constructed with an alloy stock base, steel stock bars and a polymer butt plate. This stock allows the Reaper XS EMR to be compressed down to much shorter than a standard M4/AR15 buffer tube, making it easy to store in smaller gun bags and ideal for the close confines of a CQB skirmish. This modernised stock pairs perfectly with the ergonomic pistol grip with its more vertical angle, allowing you to take corners far tighter than most ARs.

The buffer tube of the PDW stock sits beneath the butt plate when the stock is collapsed and doubles as the battery compartment of the Reaper XS EMR. To access the battery compartment, we will first need to extend the stock, then unscrew the buffer tube counterclockwise. With this done, we are presented with a Deans battery connector, a nice modern touch from Evolution Airsoft to maximise the electrical efficiency and allow for a higher rate of fire. The battery compartment is designed for PDW-style stick batteries, and we recommend a 7.4V 600mAh LiPo battery for the best fit.

Inside, the Reaper XS EMR is rocking respectable internals based around the Version 2 gearbox, offering plenty of aftermarket upgrade options for the tuning addicts. The gearbox shell is alloy and reinforced, the 18:1 steel gearset runs on 8mm oil-less steel bushings, a sector gear delayer ensures feeding is reliable at high speeds, and the polymer piston with full steel tooth rack provides low weight and strength in equal measure. The inner barrel also has a super-tight 6.01mm bore, giving the Reaper an accuracy edge with high-quality ammo and boosting FPS by enhancing air efficiency even more than common 6.03mm tightbore barrels!

The Evolution ETS II programmable ETU/MOSFET adds advanced functionality to the mix, offering programmable fire modes including 3 or 5-round burst, binary trigger, ramping full auto, sniper delay and AUG mode. Programming is carried out purely through the trigger and fire selector, meaning no extra parts are needed to take full advantage of the ETS II's advanced features. While alternative fire modes are great fun and very practical, the ETS II also offers several quality-of-life features, from auto motor diagnostics to low voltage cutoff and cycle completion, ensuring your gearbox is running efficiently with minimal parts wear.

If you need a bite-sized platform which packs a king-size punch, you can't go wrong with the Evolution Reaper XS EMR AR-9 PDW AEG; ETS II ETU. Rock solid yet light as a feather with a speedy electronic trigger and an external design uniquely equipped to deal with close quarters adversaries, the Reaper XS AR-9 PDW is a CQB game-changer!
