Whether you are gearing up for a WW2 reenactment, or you just fancy a head turner of a primary weapon for walk on skirmishes, the BO Dynamics Mosin-Nagant M44 will impress you. With a surprisingly authentic faux wood finish, alloy dummy bayonet and a lightning-fast super smooth bolt throw, this "garbage rod" would give an Enfield a run for its money doing a mad minute!

Full description

Description

Known in the west as the Mosin-Nagant, and in the east as "Mosin's Rifle", the Mosin-Nagant M44 is the shortened carbine version of the M1891 Mosin-Nagant, designed during WW2 as urban warfare became prevalent and trench warfare faded into history. The real M44 fires the same 7.62x54R cartridge as the original M1891, as well as the more modern Dragunov SVD and PKM medium machine gun. The Mosin-Nagant is one of the most widely produced rifles in history, with production numbers being quoted as around 37 million rifles. The Mosin is affectionately known as the "Garbage rod" in the states, due to its low cost and surprising effectiveness, and the disdain that more elitist shooters view it with!

The BO Dynamics M44 comes with a beautiful antique finish applied to its metal parts, and a very convincing faux wooden texture on its polymer stock. Make no mistake, this rifle would look as good mounted on the wall of a man cave as it would in the hands of a Red Army reenactor! All of the exterior parts which are metal on the real Mosin-Nagant rifle are metal on the BO Dynamics M44, giving an authentic, robust feel and realistic weight.

Starting at the tip of the outer barrel we can find the front sight block, which mounts to the barrel via a pin and provides a fine front sight post, protected against damage with a protective hood which is machined into the sight block itself. The barrel of the M44 is not threaded, which is a nod to historical accuracy but also means you will not be able to add a suppressor or tracer to this rifle without extensive modification (reenactors will be thankful for this!).

Moving rearwards we encounter the bayonet mount lug, which is constructed from steel and interfaces with the steel bayonet locking collar. The folding bayonet for this rifle is constructed from alloy, which is a nice authentic touch, but means it is absolutely not suitable for skirmishing, and in some cases, you may be asked to remove the bayonet before entering the game area. Fortunately, the bayonet mounts to its lug via a flat head screw, and with this removed the bayonet should come straight off. To deploy the bayonet, simply pull the locking collar to the rear, fold the bayonet out and place the locking collar over the muzzle, where it will lock into place under spring pressure.

Beneath the outer barrel we can find the dummy cleaning rod which matches perfectly with the form of the real article. This cleaning rod is fixed in place, as a part of the front barrel band, meaning there is no chance of it falling out during a skirmish and getting lost. As previously mentioned, the stock of the M44 is constructed from polymer with a faux wood finish. The wood grain effect on this stock is one of the best we have encountered, and thankfully lacks the orange tint that many faux wood finishes have. Between the two barrel bands, on the forestock/heat shield, the M44 has a sling slot which goes through the entire forestock, allowing a sling to be mounted on either side of the rifle, depending on your personal preference. The stock also includes a finger groove, matching the real Mosin and providing a comfortable place for the shooters support hand.

The rear sight of the M44 is a tangent type sight, typical of Soviet era firearms, providing adjustment for range with authentic graduation markings from 100 to 1000 meters. Obviously, an Airsoft M44 will not shoot that far, but regardless this still provides the ability to aim at longer ranges with some consistency, allowing relatively accurate volley fire to be carried out by the M44. The sight can be adjusted by squeezing the two textured buttons on either side together, after which the sight can be raised and lowered by moving the adjuster forward and backward.

Following the rear sight, we come to the receiver and trunnion. Across the top of the trunnion, where you would expect to find markings on any rifle from this era, we can find authentic Russian Cyrillic markings which are laser engraved over the antique finish. After the trunion, we come to the receiver, which is finished with the same fantastic antique finish as the other metal parts of the rifle. The bolt handle is authentically positioned horizontally when in battery and requires a 90-degree turn to open. The design of the bolt mimics the real Mosin with its single massive locking lug which braces against the receiver, providing a strong yet simple design to manufacture.

The internal mechanism of this rifle is somewhat of a hybrid, combining the features of a conventional gas bolt action rifle with those of a non-blowback pistol. The use of this system allows the M44 to be used "properly" with a full bolt pull to reload after each shot, which is remarkably slick and smooth for a "garbage rod", but also provides a bit of a cheat mode. Due to the NBB derived design, it is actually the trigger that loads the bb, meaning all that is required to re-cock the rifle for another shot is lifting the bolt handle, then pushing it back down. This makes the M44 probably the fastest bolt action Airsoft rifle out there, capable of being fired at the rate of a Biathlon rifle, whilst looking way cooler! It is also possible to fire the M44 by pulling the cocking piece at the rear of the bolt back, a part of the real rifle which usually provides second-strike capability in the case of a light strike or dud round. If you upgrade this rifle to sniper rifle velocities, make sure you watch your rate of fire!

The safety of the Mosin is a bit hard to figure out from looking at it, but it is quite simple in function once you know how it works. To activate the safety, pull the cocking piece at the rear of the bolt back, rotate it counter clockwise, and lower it over the red dot marking on the left side of the receiver. This will both lock the bolt handle, preventing the rifle from being cycled, and disable the trigger by disconnecting it from the action. To take the safety back off, simply pull the cocking piece back, rotate it back into the central position, after which your trigger will come back to life, with the rifle cocked. Do not attempt to cock the rifle whilst the safety is engaged, as this may damage the action.

The magazine of the BO Dynamics M44 differs from the real rifle in that it is a detachable magazine, with a magazine release well hidden within the trigger guard. To remove the magazine, simply pull rearward on the magazine catch. We recommend you invert the rifle whilst doing this as when the magazine release is pressed, the mag will spring out slightly, and if you aren't ready for that it will take a tumble. The real Mosin uses a fixed magazine fed from stripper clips, which would be difficult to replicate in Airsoft form. The magazine holds 17 BBs, and can be loaded either by hand or using a standard speed loader. The power source for this rifle is 12g unthreaded CO2 bulbs, one of which can be installed into the magazine itself via a window on the left side of the mag body. At the front of the magazine, you will find the CO2 key, which can be removed by pushing the tool through the mag body from the left side. This tool allows you to tighten the Allen bolt in the base of the magazine to pierce the CO2 capsule. The number of shots this rifle gets from a CO2 cartridge is as yet unknown, but after firing it over 100 times whilst it still goes strong, we get the impression that it may never run out! Incredible gas efficiency from the M44, rivalling CO2 revolvers and the well-renowned MK23 in this area.

The rifle's stock is a traditional stock design, with no "semi-pistol grip", but provides a comfortable gripping surface with a cut-out in the trigger guard which is shaped to match a human hand. Fancy that, on a Russian firearm no less! The stock also includes a second sling slot, designed to interface with the sling slot on the forestock/heat shield and provide mounting apparatus for the included replica Mosin-Nagant two-point sling. The sling is a far cry from those cheap slings included with some replicas, which we do not advise using, and is made from thick and strong material which should support the weight of the M44 without issue. Each sling slot has an alloy insert, to ensure that your sling cannot cause damage or cracks to the stock. At the rear of the stock, we are treated to an alloy butt plate, which is a period-correct design with a smooth finish without texturing. In Soviet Russia, you are lucky you get that!

So, if you are looking for a primary for your Red Army loadout, or for your *insert random rebel group name here* loadout, the BO Dynamics M44 will suit the look, due to the real rifles' prevalence on black markets around the world. If you are more of a performance-oriented skirmisher, you will be shocked by the speed at which this rifle can be worked. This may be a golden opportunity for some creative modernisation (Google "bubba'd Mosin" for some inspiration!) which is bound to upset the purists!
