The Piston in an Airsoft Electric Gun is the driving force behind the air required to launch the BB out of the barrel. It meshes up with the teeth on the Gears to travel backwards, compressing the Spring which in turn launches the Piston forward to compress the Air in the Cylinder and force the BB out of the barrel. The Piston sees lots of abuse every time the Gearbox cycles, and so needs to be made from a tough material to last for the tens of thousands of shots you would expect an AEG to last for. Having 'Steel Teeth' or a 'Steel Rack' on the Piston helps to ensure long-lasting performance, but is not essential.
