Double Bell M607 CAR-15 AEG

If you're all about the old school vibe, the Double Bell M607 CAR-15 AEG has your name on it! A full metal build inspired by one of the first short-barrelled AR-15s, the Colt 607, this utterly unique AR platform makes a fantastic primary for a Vietnam War-inspired loadout but also makes a great base gun for an old-meets-new build.

Starting at the front, we can find an XM16E1 tri-prong flash hider mounted to 14mm CCW male threading at the tip of the alloy outer barrel. While the TM CAR-15 used a cylindrical compensator, the XM16E1 flash hider was also used on real Colt M607s. If you've got other plans for the front end, you can switch the muzzle device for a tracer or suppressor thanks to the common 14mm CCW threading.

Moving rearwards, we come to the front sight, the classic AR-15 triangular front sight tower/gas block. At the top, we have the adjustable front sight post, able to be raised and lowered using an AR-15 front sight adjustment tool. On the bottom, we have a sling point, ideally paired with the rear sling point at the toe of the stock for a two-point sling setup.

Following the front sight, we come to the handguards, a shortened version of the M16A1 triangular handguards made from robust fibre-reinforced polymer with a textured matte finish. This handguard setup is remarkably comfortable, ideal for traditional rifle shooting stances, which cradle the underside of the handguard with the palm.

The battery compartment of this front-wired setup is inside the handguard, accessible with the right side handguard segment removed. To do this, pull the delta ring at the rear of the handguards back, and you can lift the right side segment free. Inside, you'll find a mini-Tamiya connector. Battery space is quite tight, but you should be able to fit a 7.4V 1000mAh LiPo battery in crane/nunchuck configuration neatly inside if you're careful not to trap the wiring.

Next up, we reach the receiver, made from alloy with a smooth anodised finish. The upper receiver is a perfect match for the real Colt M607, equipped with the fixed "A1" carry handle/ghost ring rear sight assembly and no forward assist or brass deflector. The lower receiver is an M4A1-type, equipped with reinforcement around the front pin hole and a raised section on the right side to protect the mag release from accidental presses.

The charging handle, at the top rear of the receiver, is a low-snag "milspec" design commonly found on military issue AR-15 rifles. Rack it back, and the mock bolt will lock open, revealing the rotary HOP-up unit inside. The HOP-up allows you to tune the amount of backspin applied to your BBs, letting you tune the flight path for your chosen ammo weight. Hit the bolt catch over on the left side to return the mock bolt to battery with a satisfying metal-on-metal "clank".

Up top, we have the A1 carry handle, equipped with a windage-adjustable rear "ghost ring" aperture iron sight. The sight is equipped with two apertures for different engagement ranges. For Airsoft, we recommend using the finer aperture for aimed semi-automatic fire in good lighting and the wider aperture for close range, full auto and low-light scenarios.

The fire selector switch is on the left side, offering 3 modes of fire with a 90-degree throw between each. The available modes are safe, semi-auto and fully automatic, and each mode is denoted with bold white text. The pistol grip, just below the selector, is the correct "A1" textured design, widely regarded as a comfortable grip design and well-suited to old-school builds.

At the rear, we have the unique CAR-15/Colt 607 sliding stock, styled similarly to the A1 fixed stock but much shorter, and with a trick up its sleeve. The catch on the butt plate allows you to rapidly extend the stock to a full length of pull under spring tension, making it very fast to deploy.

In its shortest position, this stock is great for taking corners, and at full length, it approximately matches the usual AR buffer tube at position 4. There is a middle position available, a neat addition from Double Bell for ease of use with modern body armour vests. At the toe of the stock, we have the rear sling point, ready for a two-point sling.

Internals

Inside, Double Bell's CAR-15 is based on a TM-compatible version 2 gearbox, equipped with an alloy shell, 18:1 ratio steel gears running on 8mm ball-bearing bushings and a quick-change spring guide for easy power tuning. The nozzle and piston head are made from CNC-machined aluminium, and the motor is a potent 25K RPM example, equipped with a ball-bearing shaft to reduce stress in the long term.

The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore example, offering impressive accuracy potential with high-quality ammo. This is paired with a TM-compatible rotary HOP-up unit, giving you everything an AR needs to compete without pushing the price too high.
