Description

If you love the 1911 shape but need something with modern ergonomics, the G&G Armament GX45 MKI 1911 GBB Pistol is one to watch. Finished to the fantastic standard we expect from G&G, the GX45 MKI boasts front and rear slide serrations, ergonomic grip panels, extended controls and a skeletonised trigger and hammer, giving it sporty styling with the iconic 1911 silhouette.

Inside, G&G has worked wonders, equipping the GX45 with the "whirl valve", a rocket valve designed to dissipate frost buildup to enhance cold-weather and rapid-fire performance. All rubber parts in both the pistol and magazine are made from G&G's cold-resistant green rubber, giving the GX45 the edge over other 1911 designs in the relatively cold UK climate. Anyone who has used a full metal 1911 replica with green gas will know its limitations due to the slim magazine design and small gas reservoir. The GX45 is far better in all aspects, and its convenient external HOP-up adjustment makes tuning the trajectory far easier than others, which require disassembly for adjustment.

Starting at the front, we can find the intimidatingly large .45 calibre bore, a sight the enemy team won't be happy to see! The GX45 does not include barrel threading due to its unique HOP-up adjustment system, so unfortunately, you won't be able to mount a tracer unit or suppressor.

To adjust the HOP-up, simply index the included bullet-style adjustment tool inside the front of the outer barrel and turn it counterclockwise (looking at the pistol from the front) to increase the HOP-up effect. Standard 1911 pistols require the slide to be removed to access the tiny HOP-up dial, far less convenient than G&G's GX45, especially mid-firefight while wearing gloves.

The slide matches the 1911 profile but is considerably modernised in line with modern shooting techniques. Deep slide serrations are present at the front and rear, allowing you to rack the slide from the front or back with ease, even in wet weather conditions. On each side, we are treated to flawlessly engraved G&G trademarks, providing a discrete and professional look mimicking modern real steel 1911 pistols popular on the US civilian market.

On top, we are equipped with adjustable open white dot iron sights, with a fixed front post and a rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. To adjust windage (side to side), use the flathead screw on the right side. To set the elevation, use the screw on the top. The rear face of the rear sight also includes anti-glare serrations, ensuring you get a good sight picture, even in bright sunlight.

Moving down to the frame, we can take note of the skeletonised trigger, a discrete aesthetic style-up to match modern real-world 1911 pistols. The trigger is a straight back pull design with a serrated front, which is nice and light with an audible and tactile reset. The slide lock/release catch, located above the trigger on the left side, is an extended design which makes it considerably easier to use from a firing grip, even for those with smaller hands.

The thumb safety is also extended, an ambidextrous design which locks the trigger and slide when pushed up. The serrations on the upper surface help ensure you have good purchase in wet weather and also allow the safety to function as a thumb rest, ensuring your gripping position is consistent, which encourages accuracy downrange.

The grip panels of the GX45 MKI are a modernised design with a thumb bevel on the left side to provide easy access to the low-profile magazine release button. Each grip panel is textured with G&G logo checkering, a comfortable texture which isn't abrasive when held in ungloved hands.

On the rear of the frame, we can find the skeletonised hammer, which is made of seriously strong stuff with a strong spring behind it, dropping with authority when the trigger is pulled. Thanks to its textured surface, the hammer can easily be cocked manually for those movie standoff moments. Just below, we are equipped with a beavertail grip safety, a device which needs to be pushed in for the pistol to be fired. This helps prevent negligent discharges on the draw, and while many competition shooters disable this feature, we consider it an essential for a combat pistol with such a short, light trigger pull.

Below the grip safety, we can find what is known as the "hammer spring housing", featuring texture on the surface in line with modern high-end real steel 1911s. On the bottom, we are treated to a lanyard loop which allows you to fit a pistol retention lanyard and ensure your lovely GX45 doesn't get lost should it slip out of your holster in the woods.

If you're a fan of classic pistol designs reinvented for the 21st century, you'll love the G&G GX45 MKI 1911 GBB Pistol. With top-tier fit and finish, superb cold-weather performance and plenty of convenient quality-of-life features built in, the GX45 is one of the best 1911s on the market!
