Description

If you're a fan of the legendary 1911 but want a sprinkle of modernity, the Golden Eagle 3368 1911 Custom GBB Pistol is one to watch. Based around the original 1911, which practically defined the shape of modern semi-automatic pistols, this 1911 has been given the 21st-century treatment, with a CNC aluminium ported slide, light-enhancing front iron sight, ergonomic grip panels and a flared magazine well.

Inside, this full metal build is equipped with a 6.02mm tightbore inner barrel for an accuracy and efficiency boost, along with a steel hammer and steel hammer group components to extend lifespan and improve reliability in the long term. If you're a fan of classic designs with modern enhancements, the Golden Eagle 3368 1911 Custom GBB Pistol belongs in your holster!

Starting at the front of the slide, we can find the front iron sight blade, equipped with a red light-enhancing insert for fast target acquisition, especially in dark conditions. This pairs well with the adjustable anti-glare rear sight, providing a modern sight setup equally at home in CQB or shooting smaller targets outdoors. Both the front and rear sights are made from robust steel, a big plus for durability in this affordable build.

At the tip of the outer barrel are 11mm CW female threads, meaning you can add a tracer unit or suppressor using an 11mm CW female to 14mm CCW male thread adapter. If you're a tracer kinda person, we recommend the Eshooter Flare-M, as it is packaged with the correct adapter and you can get shooting straight away!

The outer barrel itself is fluted, a feature present on high-end real steel pistols designed to reduce barrel weight and improve heat dissipation properties to enhance rapid fire accuracy. Being finished in matte gold makes the barrel fluting really pop, a big contributor to the custom styling of the build overall.

The slide is CNC machined from aluminium, granting it a flawless form, precise details and a super smooth feel when racked. At the front, the slide features ports on the top and sides with a weight reduction recess, reducing slide weight for a faster cyclic rate while allowing the slide to be racked from the front. At the rear of the slide, we have deep serrations which provide plenty of grip for wet weather or gloved use, but are rounded at the corners for comfort.

The rear sight lives at the rear of the slide, an adjustable example similar to those used on Hi-Capa 5.1 pistols. Elevation can be adjusted by turning the screw on the top, while windage is adjusted using the screw on the right side, using a flathead screwdriver.

As we move rearwards, we can find the slide release catch, which has checkering on the upper surface to ensure it can be operated when wet or in adverse weather. Likewise, the magazine release is textured and is right where you expect to find it, well within reach of your thumb whilst firing, on the left side of the grip.

The grip panels of the 1911 Custom are a modernised design, pairing well with the ported slide and other cutting-edge design features. The grips are made from high-density polymer, equipped with linear grooves to improve traction and a thumb recess to allow right-handed users easier access to the magazine release.

At the base of the grip, we can find what is known as a magazine well flare or flared magwell, designed to help guide your magazine in during a reload. This makes reloads on the move much easier and allows you to continue to scan for targets as you bring your sidearm back into action. A flared magwell is an essential feature for competition shooting setups, but is rapidly translating across to modern combat pistols, as the advantages are obvious.

The front face of the trigger also includes linear grooves to enhance traction and is of a straight travel (aka straight back) design, similar to the 1911's double-stack descendant, the Hi-capa. This allows for a consistent and accurate trigger pull, taking full advantage of the light and short pull of a 1911 trigger. Being a modernised trigger design, this trigger features 3 ports to reduce weight and add to the custom styling.

The safety lever can be found on either side of the frame and sits comfortably under the shooter's thumb, perfect for cocked and locked carry. Unlike the original 1911 safety first designed over 100 years ago, this safety lever is an ambidextrous example, presenting an extended lever on each side, which locks the trigger when pushed up and can be used as a thumb rest when pushed down.

On the rear of the frame, we have what is known as a beavertail grip safety, a hallmark feature of the 1911, allowing it to get away with a super short trigger pull and still be safe by disconnecting the trigger until the pistol is gripped fully and properly. The beavertail safety ensures the trigger cannot be inadvertently pressed when drawing from a holster, which can be quite a painful experience in Airsoft, let alone real steel. The style of grip safety used on the 1911 Custom is a low-profile example, providing minimal interruption of the natural 1911 ergonomics while still providing a significant safety benefit.

Just above the grip safety, we come to the hammer, which is a modern, angled design made from steel, ported in the centre to reduce weight. The hammer is shaped to allow you to cock the pistol by pulling the hammer back more easily, and while this isn't really useful for Airsoft, it is still great fun to play with and makes the GE 1911 a great movie prop.

On the inside, the Golden Eagle 1911 Custom is fully Tokyo Marui compatible, which is great news for those of us who cannot touch an Airsoft gun without upgrading it. As it comes, GE saw fit to include a 6.02mm tightbore inner barrel, providing a slight raise in FPS, improved accuracy and slightly better gas efficiency than a standard 6.08 bore barrel.

The hammer is also made from steel, as are many of the internal trigger group components, a considerable reliability advantage compared to stock cast alloy trigger parts. For the price of this pistol, this is quite the surprise, as is the smooth feel of the CNC aluminium slide and the impressive consistency when put on the chronograph. When rapid-firing, the FPS will drop as it does with any GBB pistol, but if shot carefully, you will be as surprised as we were!

If you prefer the slim feel of a 1911 grip but are seeking a speedy, Hi-Capa vibe, the Golden Eagle 3368 1911 Custom GBB Pistol is the sidearm for you! An impressive build for the price with generous pre-upgraded internals and a super slick CNC aluminium side, this old dog knows some new tricks!
