  • High density polymer build
  • 6.03mm Tightbore inner barrel
  • HAL™ MOSFET/ETU pre-installed

If you like unique short-barreled AK builds, the Specna Arms SA-J83 CORE™ Gen. 2 AKS-74U "Grizzly" AEG should fit the bill! Inspired by real steel "Krinkov" builds from the US civilian tactical scene, this AK makes use of a unique front end design with a skeletonised M-LOK handguard and the beastly "Grizzly" muzzle brake to top it off.

Inside, the SA-J83 is equipped with Specna's CORE™ Gen.2 internals, including 16:1 ratio high speed gears for a rate of fire boost, a polymer piston with a full steel tooth rack, a CNC aluminium air nozzle and the Magnus™ rotary TDC HOP-up unit. The Magnus™, combined with the Helium flat HOP-up bucking and 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel, gives this compact beast far more potential at long range than the enemy team will expect!

Made predominantly from high-density polymer with a CNC aluminium handguard, an alloy outer barrel, stamped steel top cover and a mix of steel and alloy parts, this CORE™ build has the heft to know it's there without being overburdening for younger skirmishers with less physical strength. If you love a unique AK build which gives off custom vibes, the Specna Arms SA-J83 CORE™ Gen. 2 AKS-74U "Grizzly" AEG is one to watch!

Description

If you like an AK which makes other players do a double take, the Specna Arms SA-J83 CORE™ Gen. 2 AKS-74U "Grizzly" AEG should be right up your street! Made predominantly from high-density polymer with a CNC aluminium handguard, alloy outer barrel, steel top cover and metallic trim parts, this AK takes a walk on the wild side, matching the AKS-74U in terms of length with an AK-74 gas block and front sight and the menacing DTK-2-style "Grizzly" muzzle brake. Other than custom builds, no other AK looks like this!

Internally, this CORE™ Gen.2 build has some impressive pre-upgraded parts for a platform in this price range, including a CNC aluminium air nozzle, 16:1 ratio high-speed gears, a polymer piston with a full steel tooth rack and the Magnus TDC rotary HOP-up unit paired with a Helium flat HOP-up bucking and 6.03mm Tightbore inner barrel. Make no mistake, the SA-J83 brings some serious heat downrange to go with its unique looks, perfect for a beginner seeking customised AK aesthetics or experienced skirmishers looking for an "easy mode" AK build!

Starting at the front, we cannot help but notice the massive DTK-2-style muzzle brake, which dominates the front end, furnishing the AKS-74U Grizzly with its aggressive looks. The DTK-2 mounts to 14mm CCW male barrel threads at the tip of the outer barrel, meaning tracer units, suppressors and alternative muzzle devices are a go, should you prefer a different look or added functionality.

The front sight block follows behind, an AK-74 style sight tower with protective wings on either side of the adjustable front sight post. Immediately after the front sight, we have an AK-74-style gas block and an uncovered gas tube, adding to the menacing custom looks of the Grizzly considerably.

The AKS-74U usually uses a combination front sight/gas tube, but custom "pistol" and "SBR" builds from the US civilian tactical scene often make deviations to the pure-Russian AKS-74U configuration due to parts availability or personal preference. Being inspired by the most creative gun-builders on the planet ensures no other off-the-shelf AK can match the SA-J83's distinctive style!

The handguard is made from CNC-machined aluminium, featuring M-LOK slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, ready for M-LOK accessories or 20mm Picatinny rail adapters for M-LOK. The lack of an upper handguard/gas tube cover pairs perfectly with the lightweight, skeletonised design of this handguard, resulting in a front end which is super fast to sweep between targets, with no accessory-mounting compromises.

Next up, we reach the trunnion block, which provides the mounting point for the classic AK tangent rear iron sight. The rear sight is an open design which provides multiple graduations for adjustment and a fine rear sight notch to align with the front sight post. The sight can be adjusted by pressing the buttons on either side of the sight drum and moving the drum back and forth on its base. The lever on the right side is the handguard disassembly lever, and as with all AK AEGs using the VFC external design, this can be rotated upwards by 90 degrees to release the upper handguard and gas tube.

Next up, we find the receiver, which is constructed from high-density polymer to keep the build lightweight and agile. The receiver has standard AK-style controls on the right side, with a fire selector lever which doubles as a dust cover when in safe mode, and a charging handle attached to an authentic black dummy bolt carrier.

Matching the control layout of the real AK rifle, the first position on the fire selector is fully automatic, and the lowermost position is semi-automatic. Each fire mode is denoted by a crisply engraved, authentic Russian Cyrillic marking, adding some realism to this already very realistic AK. Over on the left side, we can find an AK quick-detach dovetail mounting rail, allowing for authentic Russian AK scopes to be mounted, or Picatinny rail mounts if you prefer a more modern Western optic. As with other AK side rails, this side rail is NOT compatible with the SVD side rail mounts and only works with AK side rail mounts.

The receiver also features several mock rivets in all the right places, as well as the receiver strengthening dimples present on all Russian stamped AK receivers. The top cover is also stamped from steel and has all the correct reinforcement ribs to mimic the real AK-74 family. The SA-J83, like other Specna AKs, should definitely please the stitch counters!

To access the Magnus™ adjustable HOP-up unit of the SA-J83, simply hold the charging handle to the rear to reveal this new rotary adjustable HOP-up unit design. The HOP-up allows you to tune the SA-J83 for different ammo weights, seeking the flattest possible trajectory. The Magnus™ design shows a lot of promise, being a TDC design which applies pressure directly to the top of the bucking to minimise side-to-side shot deviation. The Helium™ HOP-up bucking also has the capability to lift heavy BBs, should the mission require it.

Being a top-wired design, the battery compartment of the SA-J83 is beneath the top cover. To access the battery compartment, simply press the button at the rear of the top cover, and it should come straight off, revealing the Deans battery connector. We recommend a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo battery in AK stick configuration, but you can just about squeeze in certain stick batteries designed for AR buffer tubes if you are very careful when reinstalling the top cover. With the battery connected and installed, you can place the top cover back on, align the button with the hole in the rear of the top cover, and pull the charging handle to lock the cover down if necessary.

The pistol grip is a standard AKM/AK-74 type pistol grip, with diamond checkering on either side to ensure the SA-J83 stays firmly in your grasp in any weather conditions. The trigger guard and magazine release can be found just ahead of the pistol grip, and are constructed from steel to provide solid magazine locking and ample rigidity. The magazine release is placed in the centre of the receiver and is accessible from either side of the AEG, perfect for left or right-handed shooters. The magazine retention system of the AK platform is a "rock and lock" motion, requiring you to first index the front "hook" on the magazine inside the receiver, then rock the magazine to engage the catch.

At the rear, we are equipped with a modern stock setup to match the modern front end, replacing the usual fixed or side-folding stock with an M4/AR-15 buffer tube adapter, a 6-position buffer tube and a slimline crane-style stock. This stock adapter appears to be similar to a real steel VLTOR design, offering a pair of QD sling sockets on the stock base, one on either side, ready for QD sling swivels.

The buffer tube follows the stock base and is constructed from aluminium, offering 6 positions of adjustment for the slimline crane stock. Adjusting the stock is as it is with any other M4/AR-15 stock; simply press the adjustment lever on the bottom and slide the stock into your desired position.

The stock mimics the crane style of rifle stock with its ergonomic sloped cheekpiece and rubber butt plate for enhanced grip, but is a slimmer design to reduce snags and the overall bulk of the rifle. The stock also has a pair of sling slots in the toe, allowing for traditional strap slings to be mounted, and QD sockets on either side, which we can confirm are functional. While it may upset a few purists, this M4-style stock setup suits the SA-J83 well and offers improved comfort and plenty of aftermarket stock options as a bonus!

Inside, this CORE™ Gen.2 platform keeps the best from the previous CORE™ line, adding the Magnus™ TDC Rotary HOP-up chamber and 16:1 ratio high-speed gears to the proven formula. This boosts the rate of fire and long-range performance considerably, giving you a build which is closer to a PRIME™ than the original CORE™.

Also inside is a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel, the perfect pairing for the Magnus™ HOP-up unit to enhance accuracy and range. The HAL adds a whole lot of functionality into the mix, with programmable fire controls, 6 levels of pre-cocking adjustment and 5 levels of trigger sensitivity adjustment. Available fire modes include 3 or 5-round burst, binary trigger, AUG mode, aka two-stage trigger, semi-auto only and sniper delay, giving you loads of options for how you use your primary. Features like these are usually only present in high-end replicas; we simply cannot believe the wealth of functionality inside this beast, especially considering the price!

If you're into custom Krinkov builds or fancy a lightweight, CQB-optimised AK with aggressive looks, the Specna Arms SA-J83 CORE™ Gen. 2 AKS-74U "Grizzly" AEG ticks all the boxes. A great value platform with looks unlike anything else out there, the SA-J83 is reliable, advanced, adaptable and affordable!
