Specna Arms SA-PX01 PRIME™ AR-9 SMG AEG

If you're a CQB specialist seeking a beast of an AR-9, the Specna Arms SA-PX01 PRIME™ AR-9 SMG AEG should be in your sights! The SA-PX01 makes use of a uniquely designed alloy AR-9 receiver with Specna's hard-wearing Nanocoating finish and stylish weight-reducing cuts throughout to separate it from other AR-9 platforms, and inside, things get even better!

Inside, this compact beast is every bit as kitted out as Specna's other PRIME platforms, featuring a powerful brushless motor known as the Dark Matter, CNC 16:1 ratio steel gears running on 8mm J-CAGE bushings, the AETHER V2 gearbox and a reinforced tappet plate for reliable feeding. The inner barrel is made from stainless steel, a 6.02mm tightbore paired with the Magnus rotary HOP-up, ensuring this compact beast can do the job at long range. 

Starting at the front, we have a standard M4/AR-15 birdcage flash hider constructed from alloy, which conceals 14mm CCW male threads beneath. The birdcage gives a rather plain look to the muzzle end, but the 14mm CCW male threading allows any of the most common muzzle devices to be mounted in its place, including tracer units and suppressors. Being a CQB-oriented platform, the SA-PX01 would certainly benefit from a tracer!

The outer barrel is constructed from alloy and is 8.5 inches in length, providing a decently sized platform for both CQB encounters and aggressive outdoor play. The M-LOK handguard is slightly shorter at 5 inches, reducing the weight at the front of the SMG and allowing it to be pointed more quickly using CQB-friendly stances. 

The 12 o'clock position of the handguard features a 20mm Picatinny rail, which extends to meet the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing for long optical sights and even red dot and magnifier combos to be mounted, leaving you plenty of room for a thumb-over-bore grip. 

The 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions boast M-LOK negative space attachment slots, allowing for M-LOK accessories to be directly mounted. On the side M-LOK slots, we have a pair of 20mm Picatinny rail adapters, which can be left in place to add 20mm Picatinny accessories or removed entirely for a sleeker look. 

This gives you the best of both worlds, with loads of accessory mounting options but a light and agile front end in its default configuration. The SA-PX01 also has a Specna Arms high-density polymer stubby vertical grip for M-LOK included in the box, part of their SAAS (Specna Arms Accessory System) range. The grip is comfortable and has crackle texture on each side for optimal grip. 

As we arrive at the receiver, we can see an M4/AR-15 style layout, but a completely original receiver design with loads of ergonomic enhancements machined in. At the front of the magazine well, we can take note of the gripping texture, which allows greater control of the SMG when using the "magwell grip", a great technique for exchanging fire at close range. The magazine well has a built-in flare to help guide your magazine in during an adrenaline-fueled reload in the thick of it, and each side of the magazine well has weight-reducing relief cuts, with the deeply and crisply engraved trademarks on the left side.

The trademarks on the receiver are Specna's own, with the SA in a box logo at the top, and "X-SERIES" followed by "9x19 mm" and the serial number just below. The markings are immaculately engraved as Specna Arms are known for, and do not detract from the realism aspect, as there is no "6mm" or "for Airsoft only" to be seen. Nice work, Specna!

The magazine release is located at the bottom of the SMG, positioned in the centre to allow for easy access for both left and right-handed shooters. This mag release is seriously massive, giving you absolutely no chance of missing it when a quick reload is needed. The texture on its surface also guarantees grip in any weather conditions. 

The trigger guard follows just behind the mag release and is built into the receiver, similarly to modern "billet" AR-15 receivers, increasing strength by removing the M4/AR-15 modular trigger guard system, which is a known point of weakness in the design. The trigger guard itself is enlarged to allow easy access to the trigger, even when wearing thick gloves, and its angle matches that of the magazine well perfectly, showing Specna's consideration for aesthetics when designing the X-series.

Within the trigger guard, we can find the flat trigger, providing an extra touch of modernity and functionality with rapid semi-auto fire. Designed to interact with the optical sensors inside the Gate ASTER II MOSFET/ETU, this trigger allows the trigger travel and the sensitivity to be adjusted to suit your preferences using Gate's Control Station app via Bluetooth. 

The HOP-up unit of the SA-PX01 is located right where we would expect it: inside the mock ejection port, concealed behind the steel mock bolt. Pulling the charging handle, located at the top rear of the receiver, will retract the mock bolt and lock it open, revealing the rotary Magnus™ HOP-up unit on the right side. 

The HOP-up allows you to adjust the amount of backspin applied to your projectiles and tune the SA-PH20 for different ammo weights, looking for the flattest possible trajectory. When you've completed your adjustments, you can slap the "ping pong paddle" style bolt release catch on the left side of the receiver to drop the mock bolt with a satisfying metal-on-metal "clank".

At the rear of the receiver, we come to the M4/AR-15 buffer tube, which is constructed from alloy and offers 6 positions of adjustment so you can adjust the stock to suit your body type and loadout perfectly. The buffer tube also serves as the battery compartment.

To access the battery compartment, you will need to pull the adjustment pin of the stock out slightly (located on the bottom of the stock). With the pin held in this position, you can slide the stock off the buffer tube to the rear, revealing a Deans battery connector inside. We recommend a 7.4V 1000mAh LiPo in stick configuration for the SA-PX01 for an easy fit and perfect performance.

Bringing up the rear of the SA-PX01, we have the Specna Arms Light Ops stock, which is part of Specna's SAAS (Specna Arms Accessory System) line. This stock is based on existing low-profile M4/AR-15 stocks but with some choice refinements for improved comfort. The cheek piece of the stock is cylindrical, avoiding potential snags and has rubberised sections on either side with Specna Arms "SA" texture to provide a positive and comfortable cheek weld.

The butt plate is constructed entirely from rubber with deep linear serrations and an angled profile to more effectively grip your shoulder if you use Airsoft body armour or a bulky tactical vest. Either side of the stock boasts QD sling sockets, meaning if you add a QD sling swivel, you can add and remove your sling in a matter of seconds or less. The low-profile adjustment lever of this stock is well out of the way and immune to snags, and has texture on its surface to allow for ease of use in wet conditions. This stock not only looks unique but functions fantastically, and the solid high-density polymer it is constructed from feels like it could be used to beat whales to death.

Internally, the SA-PX01 has a lot to boast about. The AETHER gearbox shell spine has been reinforced to ensure that it doesn't break. This is a well-known fault with V2 gearboxes, and it is good to see that Specna Arms has addressed this issue and taken matters into its own hands to make sure that it won't be a problem with this premium line of PRIME™ AEGs. The AETHER also features ports for AOE correction and sector gear timing, a big help to budding techs!

Inside the reinforced shell, we find a plethora of premium parts such as CNC 16:1 ratio steel gears running on 8mm J-CAGE bushings, a reinforced piston with a full rack of steel teeth, a reinforced tappet plate for reliable feeding, and a CNC aluminium piston head, cylinder head and nozzle for maximum long-term durability. 

The cylinder is also CNC machined from steel, as is the spring guide. To match these parts, we also find Specna Arms Dark Matter Brushless High-Speed Motor. This insane component gives the SA-PX01 a truly insane rate of fire when on full auto, and the brushless design ensures that it won't overheat as easily, even after long periods of constant full auto.
