If you love an eye-catching platform with the latest tech inside, the Specna Arms SA-E40-L EDGE™ Gen.2 M4/AR-15 AEG; HAL²™ ETU is one to watch. A revamped "Gen.2" version of the original Specna Arms SA-E40-L, this beast is packing Specna's latest programmable MOSFET, the Bluetooth-capable HAL²™.

The HAL²™ boasts all the impressive features of Specna's original HAL ETU, adding extra trigger adjustment positions, various profiles for different setting combinations, a magazine capacity limiter and Specna Link app connectivity via its Bluetooth® Low Energy module. The usual programmable fire modes are still available with the more advanced HAL²™, including burst modes, binary trigger and semi-auto lock.

Being a "Gen.2" full metal EDGE™ platform, we are treated to the advanced AETHER™ gearbox shell and Magnus TDC HOP-up unit of Specna's PRIME™ series, providing enhanced long-range performance and making gearbox tuning a piece of cake.As is the standard for Specna, the inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore, enhancing accuracy potential and providing an FPS boost thanks to air efficiency improvements. Starting at the front, we find a pre-installed bird cage-style flash hider mounted to the 14mm CCW threading at the tip of the 8.5-inch outer barrel. If you're the type to customise, you'll be happy to learn that the 14mm CCW threading is the most commonly used on Airsoft guns, giving you access to a wide variety of aftermarket muzzle devices, including flash hiders, muzzle brakes, tracer units and suppressors.

The handguard of the SA-E40-L features KeyMod attachment slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, ready for KeyMod accessories to be mounted. The offset angles include extra KeyMod slots, ideally placed for an offset flashlight, along with a full-length 20mm Picatinny rail at the 12 o'clock position, which seamlessly mates with the receiver rail.

Pre-installed on the 3 and 9 o'clock KeyMod slots, we are treated to a pair of 20mm Picatinny rails for KeyMod, made from CNC-machined aluminium and finished in eye-catching metallic blue. These rails allow you to mount 20mm Picatinny accessories onto the KeyMod slots, but if you prefer a sleeker look, you can remove them entirely. The set also includes a stubby vertical foregrip which mounts to KeyMod slots, a great accessory for close-quarters handling.

Mounted to the upper Picatinny rail, we can find pre-installed flip-up aperture iron sights, made from high-density polymer and offering toolless windage adjustment via the drum on the right side of the rear sight. The front sight is also adjustable for elevation using an M4/AR-15 front sight adjustment tool. The sights are rail-mounted and can be removed, but thanks to their low-profile form, they can be left installed and flipped down for emergency use without obstructing the top rail and preventing a scope or red dot sight from being mounted.

As we come to the receiver of the SA-E40-L, we can take note of its familiar M4/AR-15 style layout, making it an easy transition in terms of training if you're already accustomed to running an AR platform in-game. The most noticeable change from a milspec AR is the weight-reducing ports, machined along the left side of the upper receiver and right side of the magazine well, adding sporty styling to the mix while saving weight to enhance handling. The magazine release fence on the right side is serrated, and the forward assist bulge is scalloped, shaving off a few more precious grams so you can outpace your foes!

The charging handle is an extended example, positioned at the top rear of the receiver, which can be pulled back to reveal the rotary HOP-up unit, the latest design for the M4/AR-15 AEG and is known for allowing finer increments of adjustment for more precise HOP-up application, and holding its setting for longer under the vibrations of full-auto fire.

The fire selector is of the standard M4/AR-15 layout, with a 3-position selector switch located above the pistol grip on the left side, offering safe, semi-auto and full auto. The selector has a 90-degree throw between each fire mode, allowing the control to be used swiftly while minimising the chances of accidentally knocking the selector out of place.

The Specna Arms SA-E40-L features a skeletonised flat trigger, blending well with its competition-shooting inspired build and allowing for snappy double taps in semi-auto. The pistol grip features crackle texturing on either side and linear serrations on the front and back, providing excellent gripping qualities for both gloved and ungloved users. As with most M4/AR-15 AEGs, this grip is compatible with aftermarket M4/AR-15 AEG grips, ideal for customisation addicts!

The magazine release is located on the magazine well on the right side and is well within reach of the trigger finger for right-handed users. This mag catch is right-hand optimised but can be used by lefties as well with a bit of practice. The right side of the upper receiver has the usual M4/AR-15 features, including a mock forward assist button, mock brass deflector and the dust cover which conceals the mock bolt and HOP-up adjuster.

At the rear of the receiver, we are treated to an ambidextrous sling plate which offers two sling points on the left side and one on the right. The sling plate is ideal for single-point slings, but can also be paired with a front sling mount if you prefer a two-point sling setup. Being constructed from steel allows the sling plate to take the weight of the SA-E40-L easily, and provides confidence that the plate will never fail and dump your gorgeous rifle into the dirt.

Following the sling plate, we come to the 6-position M4/AR-15 buffer tube, which is constructed from aluminium for a great balance of strength, realism and low weight. The Crane stock of the SA-E40-L is mounted over the buffer tube and features a sloped cheekpiece for greater comfort, a thick rubber butt plate with aggressive gripping texture and a QD sling socket on either side, both of which are fully functional. The stock has 6 positions of adjustment, making it suitable for any body type or loadout and includes a quick-detach butt plate for easy access to the battery compartment.

The battery compartment is inside the crane stock, accessible by squeezing the two tabs at the toe of the stock together, after which you can lift the butt plate off, remove the battery plug and make use of the stock's built-in battery compartment to house a nunchuck/crane-style battery. The pre-installed connector is a Deans/T-plug, but a Deans to mini-Tamiya adapter is included in the box. For the SA-E40-L, we recommend a 7.4V 1200mAh LiPo stick battery for an easy fit and great performance.

Inside this Gen.2 EDGE™ build, we are treated to the Aether™ enhanced gearbox shell, the same reinforced V2 shell used in Specna's top-tier PRIME series. The Aether™ features a reinforced spine and ports throughout the design to allow for easy tuning, ideal for the techy types. Also inside are 18:1 ratio steel gears running on 8mm bushings. 

The spring guide is an ESA quick-change example, making power tuning a breeze for those who want to get as close to site limits as possible. The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore paired with the Magnus TDC rotary HOP-up unit, giving you superb accuracy potential and the most up-to-date HOP-up unit style for M4/AR-15 AEGs. All internal parts are Tokyo Marui AEG spec, meaning aftermarket upgrades are a go for the performance seekers!

The obvious highlight of this impressive build is the cutting-edge HAL²™ MOSFET, providing all of the usual on-board ETU functions, from binary trigger to battery protection and precocking, along with connectivity to the Specna Link™ app, which is where the magic really happens.

The Specna Link™ app allows you to customise your trigger pull to one of a whopping 500 sensitivity settings, letting you tune the trigger to your exact specifications, whether you prefer a longer pull or a super-short hair trigger. While the original HAL™ had plenty of programmable fire mode options, you can now use all 3 positions for a firing mode and arrange the selector layout as you see fit. Just remember, keep your finger off the trigger if you're not setting a "Safe" mode!

You can also set a magazine capacity limit and reload time for milsim ops, which cuts off firing for the specified "reload time" after the capacity limit is reached, simulating a fast mid-combat reload without all the effort! Once you've got your HAL²™ settings squared away, you can save your settings as a profile, meaning you can hotswap to a different setup and back again without messing about!
