  • Tokyo Marui build quality
  • Next generation recoil shock system - Immersive recoil
  • Ultra smooth gearbox and incredible HOP-up unit

The latest from the Airsoft Gods at Tokyo Marui, the AK White Storm is a reinvention of the original TM AKM NGRS rifle from many years ago. The White Storm takes the classic AK design and outfits it for a more modern era, complete with a 6 position retractable stock, both M-LOK and 20mm Picatinny rail mounting interfaces and an ergonomic pistol grip which will leave you not wanting to put this rifle down!

The most notable addition to this new AK NGRS is its "stop firing on empty" feature, which will never leave you guessing as to when your magazine has run dry. If this happens, the AK White storm does what a real AK does, absolutely nothing - meaning you must quickly insert a loaded magazine and allow the White Storm to continue to unleash a white storm of BBs upon the enemy team!

Description

The Tokyo Marui NGRS system is well established as the best combination of superb AEG performance with immersive recoil approaching that of a GBB rifle. The latest member of the NGRS family, the AK White Storm takes the original TM AKM NGRS system and adds a "stop firing on empty" function, and a plethora of ultra-modern AK features allowing the venerable old AK platform to turn and burn with the latest and greatest designs out there. The AK White storm sports full metal construction with an alloy outer barrel and receiver paired with a steel top cover with a flawless, wobble-free build. This AEG certainly lives up to the famed TM build quality, both in its externals and internals, and has phenomenal range and accuracy thanks to its perfectly tuned TM inner barrel and presumably, magic coated HOP-up rubber.

Starting at the tip of the alloy outer barrel we can find a stubby vortex flash hider, with a twisted 4-prong design, contributing to the ultra modern, compact form of the AK White Storm. This flash hider mounts directly to the 14mm CCW male threads at the tip of the outer barrel, meaning you can simply unthread your flash hider if you want to mount a suppressor for a more sneaky look (a PBS-1 shorty looks AMAZING on this AEG!) or a tracer unit to enhance your in-game performance and make the AK White Storm truly yours. Following the flash hider, we can find a combination front sight/gas block; a feature which is synonymous with a modern, tactical AK rifle. This part is intended to reduce weight over a seperate front sight and gas block, and helps compress the AK design down into a CQB optimised design. The sight setup of the AK White Storm combines an adjustable front sight post with a fixed pistol style rear sight notch for fast acquisition, together with facilities to mount either a 2-inch section of 20mm Picatinny rail or a mounting plate for the Tokyo Marui Micro Pro Sight, both of which are included in the box. The sight sits at the front of the rear sight block, with the Picatinny rail mounting just behind with a helpful cutout milled in the centre to allow the iron sights to be used whilst the Picatinny rail section is mounted.

Moving rearwards, we come to the M-LOK/Picatinny handguard, which is constructed from high density polymer with a flawless flat white finish. On the right side of the lower handguard we are treated to a black M-LOK logo, confirming this handguard's compatibility with real spec M-LOK accessories and providing some contrast with its black on white colouration. At the 6 o'clock position, the handguard provides a 20mm Picatinny rail which is perfect for the addition of a vertical or angled foregrip, or the included Picatinny hand stops which are finished in the same beautiful flat white as the handguards themselves. At the 3 and 9 o'clock position we can find 3 M-LOK negative space attachment points, keeping the front end of the White Storm light and pointable whilst still allowing accessories to be mounted when the mission requires it. Included in the box are 3 M-LOK Picatinny rails of various lengths, and 4 M-LOK rail covers with grip-enhancing ball texture, offering you additional control when running the AK White Storm in a high speed, low drag configuration. The 12 o'clock position is left smooth, with linear textured sections at either side to encourage a modern c-clamp/thumb over bore grip; bringing this AK in line with the latest shooting doctrines and allowing faster target to target transitions.

The battery compartment of the AK White Storm is located inside the upper handguard, and can be accessed by lifting the handguard disassembly latch, found on the right side just below the rear sight block. Rotating the latch 90 degrees upwards will allow the upper handguard to come free. Inside you will find a mini-Tamiya connector, allowing the AK White Storm to use the most common and available Airsoft batteries. The space inside the handguard is relatively limited but has enough room for a standard 8.4V 1100mAh mini-block battery or a 7.4V 600mAh LiPo battery in nunchuck/crane configuration. We recommend a 7.4V LiPo for this AEG as it provides a high rate of fire and snappy trigger response without overstressing the gearbox and recoil system.

As we arrive at the receiver, there are many noteworthy enhancements to discuss! The first of which is the absolute lack of wobble, or any movement whatsoever in the White Storm's receiver top cover. If you have owned an AK AEG before, or have heard any anecdotes about the real AK rifle you will know this is the exception, not the rule. The super-tight top cover engagement gives the AK White Storm a rock solid feel, leaving the rickety AK stereotypes in the dust and giving this AK the feel of a custom-tuned modern tactical AK. The top cover design is in line with a real AKM/AK74, with reinforcing ribs stamped into the part to provide additional strength whilst keeping the part thin and lightweight. Beneath the top cover lies the NGRS recoil weight, providing jarring recoil which you will have to do some work to control!

The receiver itself is an AK47 Type 3 milled receiver, matching that of the earliest mass production AK47 with its thick and strong milled receiver. On the right side of the receiver, we can find authentic Russian Cyrillic markings, denoting the fire modes of the AK White Storm exactly how any AK should. The first position of the selector lever is the "safe" mode, which locks the trigger and prevents the AEG from firing, the second position is fully automatic, positioned as such to prevent accidentally engaging full auto, and the lowermost position is semi-automatic, allowing a quick sweep down of the fire selector to get you into action quickly. The mock bolt carrier is constructed from lightweight alloy, and reciprocates with each shot to provide immersive noise and recoil. As with all AK designs, the charging handle is integrated into the bolt carrier and protrudes on the right side of the rifle. Pulling the charging handle to the rear reveals the AK White Storm's gear adjustable HOP-up unit, which can be dialed in to suit the weight of BB you are using and the range at which you are engaging.

The selector design present on the AK White Storm is a modernised design, with an extended tab to allow the shooter to manipulate the selector with their trigger finger in line with modern shooting doctrine, whilst still being able to be used with just the right hand the way Kalashnikov intended. The selector also features a cut out in its upper surface, used on a real AK to lock the bolt open manually. This is included merely for realism but is a nice touch and underlines the AK White Storm's modern design parameters, lying directly in line with modern customised AKs in the real world. The magazine release can be found right where one might expect it on an AK platform rifle; centrally positioned and attached to the trigger guard to allow both left and right-handed users to change magazines with ease. This magazine release design also allows for an ultra quick mag-flip reload, though we do not recommend this as your magazines will potentially get damaged.

The finish on the AK White Storm receiver and top cover perfectly matches the flat white of the handguards and stock; a true testament to the care and attention paid by TM to the aesthetics of this AEG. This finish is no white spray paint and is both flawlessly smooth and robust; allowing details to show through whilst giving the AK White Storm some decent scratch resistance. The white parts work perfectly with the matt black components to provide some attractive visual interest and allow for some interesting customisation options, including providing a solid base for vinyl skins and eye-catching custom paint jobs which would be difficult to apply on an all-black AEG.

The AK White Storm is not all about looks, though it is surely a looker! Installed over the top of the ancient AK47 design we can find some of the latest and greatest AK platform ergonomic enhancements, bringing this Boomer rifle into the modern age! Surrounding the magazine well we can find one of the most useful additions; the magazine well flare/extension. This part attaches to the trigger guard and indexes with the weight-reducing grooves on either side to provide a helpful guide to aid insertion of the magazine, which can be difficult for new users to master and can be a faff under fire even for AK platform veterans. This extension simplifies the reload process and helps the user to find the magazine well when under pressure; allowing a reload without looking at the rifle itself. This frees up your eyes to scan for fresh targets and maintain optimal situational awareness.

The legacy AK style pistol grip has been ditched in favour of a modern high density polymer grip, with a textured finish and linear serrations at the front and back strap to provide exceptional gripping qualities, whether you wear gloves or not. This grip is leaps and bounds ahead of the old school AK grip design, and even includes an integrated palm rest to prevent the AK grip from slipping out of your grasp in poor weather conditions or when holding the White Storm with a single hand.

The AK style stock has also been omitted and replaced with an M4/AR15 compatible buffer tube and a unique collapsable stock. This buffer tube can accept any AEG spec M4/AR15 stock but differs from those found on an M4/AR15 in its skeletonised design; eliminating the added weight which usually comes with adding an M4/AR15 stock to another platform. This buffer tube provides 6 positions of adjustment for whatever stock is mounted, allowing the AK White Storm to be set up for any body type or choice of loadout.

The retractable stock is a unique TM design, providing a slimline style stock with a snag-free, low profile adjustment lever and QD sling sockets on either side. These sling sockets can be used with QD sling studs and an M-LOK QD sling point to provide a flexible sling set-up which can be installed and removed in seconds. The stock also has a party trick, which pairs with its collapsible functionality perfectly. The toe of the stock can be removed and reversed to convert the rifle's butt plate from a concave setup for use with body armour to a convex setup which is ideal for a lightweight loadout and conforms to the shape of the shooter's shoulder perfectly. The butt plate can be converted using an Allen key and is as simple as removing the stock toe, reversing it, and reattaching it to the small rail section on the bottom of the stock. The butt plate provides linear grooves with a rubberised coating to ensure the AK White Storm sits solidly in your shoulder in any weather condition. The stock is injection moulded from flat white polymer, with a black butt plate for a bit more of that striking contrast which makes this AK a real head turner.

The AK White Storm includes an additional feature which was left out of the original TM AKM NGRS released many years ago. The AK design may not feature a bolt hold open/release catch like an M4/AR15, but TM have overcome this design limitation to include a "stop firing on empty" feature in the AK White Storm. This is achieved with an additional follower at the front of the magazine which trips an internal lever in the gearbox, preventing it from firing until a new magazine is inserted. This is very useful in-game, and prevents you from accidentally firing fresh air at the enemy when BBs are needed! This feature can be disabled using the catch on the right side of the magazine feed lips, which can be pushed forwards to lock the follower down and allow the AK White Storm to be dryfired.

For those who like recoil but aren't bothered about realism, or those who already have a heap of standard AK AEG magazines TM has thought of you too! The AK White Storm includes an AEG magazine adapter in the box, which can be easily installed without the need for tools and allows this NGRS AK to feed from standard AEG magazines of any capacity, including drum magazines! This means you can use your old AK mags when needed, or you can load up on NGRS magazines but bring the adapter and a drum for when extra firepower is needed!

The internals of the AK White Storm are exactly what we would expect from a Tokyo Marui NGRS, sporting a perfectly tuned gearbox that sounds as smooth as butter, even under the additional strain of the recoil system. Its range and accuracy are truly remarkable for an unaltered, out of the box AEG, and this thing will happily lift 0.28g and heavier BBs thanks to what we presume is that proprietary TM magic dust we keep hearing so much about. Being a mature platform, the NGRS system offers a wide aftermarket of internal upgrades, but left as it is this AK will absolutely last a lifetime of regular use with no upgrades necessary to stay ahead of practically anything else it will encounter.

So, if you are looking for an exceptional AK in every way, you have found it! Performance wise, any TM NGRS will be hard to beat, requiring no upgrades to out range practically anything out there.  In the looks department, this AK has the complete look of a custom build, and would be as at home with a District 9 inspired loadout as it would with any other modern kit. The white finish may put some off, but it also broadens the aesthetic horizon with a lovely flat white finish which would make a fine base for any gun skin or custom paint job, and alternatively help you disappear in the snow!
