Description
If you like a hard-recoiling AK with mission-ready features on board, you'll love the Tokyo Marui AKX ZET System Gas Blowback Rifle! This full metal AK replica is dressed to impress, equipped with an M-LOK handguard, railed gas tube, trunnion block and top cover, along with a 1913/20mm Picatinny stock interface at the rear. With this amount of customisation on board, the AKX can be kitted out with even more accessories than an M4!
Inside, the AKX is based on Tokyo Marui's incredible ZET system, widely regarded as the most reliable GBBR system out there. In terms of performance, the AKX is leagues ahead of other GBBRs, and its ever-growing aftermarket will please those who simply must upgrade everything!
Starting at the front, we can find a muzzle brake-style flash hider mounted to 14mm CCW male threading at the tip of the outer barrel. This means you can kit the AKX out with a suppressor, tracer unit or alternative muzzle device, though the pre-installed alloy muzzle brake really suits the modern looks of the build as a whole.
Moving rearwards, we come to the combination front sight/gas block assembly, a unique design inspired by the real steel AK-105 and US-made Rifle Dynamics AK builds. The sight block is made from alloy with a contrasting gunmetal finish applied, providing a realistic look with a finish which varies across parts made with different manufacturing processes, just like a real AK. The front sight post can be adjusted for elevation using the adjustment tool in the included accessories box.
Next up, we reach the M-LOK handguard, made from precisely CNC-machined aluminium with a hard-wearing anodised coating. The handguard features M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions with additional slots at the lower offset angles, providing plenty of flexibility in where you mount your accessories.
On each side, the handguard also includes a QD sling socket, ready for QD sling swivels to be mounted. There is another QD sling socket on the right side of the stock, ideal for those who want to run a two-point sling. As generous as ever, TM even includes 3 M-LOK rails in the box, inside the accessory box, allowing you to run your favourite 20mm accessories wherever you need them on the M-LOK handguard.
Above the handguard, we have a 20mm Picatinny-railed gas tube cover, ideal for a forward-mounted red dot sight, a tactical flashlight or an aiming laser. To the rear of the gas tube cover, we have yet more rail space on the top of the trunnion block, which leads seamlessly on to the railed top cover. This amount of rail real estate means you can mount whatever you need to the AKX, whether it's a red dot sight and magnifier combo, LPVO scope or a full-sized riflescope. Most AKs can only dream of this amount of rail space!
At the rear of the top cover, we have a dial which isn't present on other AK designs. This is intended to allow you to tighten the fit of the top cover so any optic you have mounted will retain zero in the long term. This cures one of the biggest pitfalls of the AK design in modern applications, its loose-fitting by design top cover. When the dial is tightened, the AKX top cover is absolutely rock solid thanks to this impressive TM innovation.
The gear-adjustable HOP-up unit of the AKX is inside, the receiver, on the left side of the chamber. To access the dial for adjustment, you'll need to remove the top cover, recoil spring and bolt carrier. To do this, loosen the dial on the rear of the receiver, then press the button on the back of the top cover, and it can be lifted free.
The next step is to push the recoil spring assembly forward to disengage it from its mounting lugs in the receiver, then lift it free. With the recoil spring removed, you should be able to slide the bolt carrier all the way back in its tracks and lift it out at the rearmost position.
With the guts out, you will see a gear-style HOP-up adjuster on the left side of the outer barrel with numbered setting markings so you can keep track of your HOP-up settings for various BB weights. The HOP-up adjuster can also be reached through the magazine well in case you need to make a quick field adjustment, but the numerical markings are hard to read from this position, and you may need to remove any gloves to get to the adjustment wheel.
The receiver itself is constructed from alloy and has a rough surface texture to simulate the anti-corrosion paint finish on real AK rifles. The layout is exactly what we would expect for an AK, with the fire selector on the right side doing double duty as a dust cover and the charging handle at the front right, directly mounted to the bolt carrier. While the layout is the same, all of the fire controls are significantly enhanced, allowing you to manipulate the AKX with modern techniques at incredible speed!
The magazine release is centrally positioned on the bottom of the receiver and is accessible from either side of the rifle, an extended design with a finger ledge. The finger ledge allows you to drop the magazine easily during an emergency reload (not recommended for gas mags) and carry out retention reloads much faster. The trigger guard/mag release assembly is constructed from steel with the same finish as the receiver, correctly simulating the anti-corrosion finish consistently despite the different materials used for each part.
Either side of the receiver has mock rivets and real pins in all the right places, making for a realistic AK look that even the most particular AK fanboys will appreciate. The fire selector markings are concealed under a sticker as it comes from the factory, preventing the usual AK fire selector scratch from occurring during testing. A thoughtful touch from TM, the kind you only get from them!
The fire selector markings are the correct Russian Cyrillic markings, with the uppermost position being safe, the middle position being full auto and the lowermost being semi. Contrary to popular belief, the AK was designed this way to allow fast selection of the semi-auto mode when wearing thick gloves, not because full auto was its primary fire mode.
The fire selector itself is also an enhanced design, inspired by the real steel X47 selector lever. The addition of a finger ledge to the usual AK selector design allows you to change fire modes using your trigger finger without removing your hand from the pistol grip. This is a considerable advantage in manipulation speed compared to a standard AK, especially if used with modern shooting techniques.
One of the biggest improvements in the AKX when it comes to shooter comfort is its ergonomic pistol grip, a super-comfortable design with textured flanks and linear serrations on the front and back. Unlike the OG AK grip, this grip features a prominent palm rest at the base like ergonomic AR grips, ensuring you can easily control the AKX when carried in "high ready" position.
At the rear of the receiver, the AKX is rocking a 1913/20mm Picatinny stock interface, the most modern stock attachment method out there, found on only the latest real steel firearms designs. This means you can change out the stock for a 1913-compatible stock of your choice, including AR buffer tube adapters, MCX slimline stocks, visor/respirator stocks and much, much more. While the pre-installed stock is a fantastic design which perfectly suits the modern looks of the AKX, it's always nice to have the option of changing things up easily!
The stock itself is made from high-density polymer with an alloy buttonless folding mechanism, requiring an upward push on the stock to fold it to the side. The stock features a convex butt plate ideal for use with body armour and is a low-snag "A-frame" style design, reducing the risk of a sling snag slowing you down. On the right side of the stock base, we're treated to a QD sling socket, ready for a QD sling swivel or QD-compatible sling to be fitted. We recommend the HASTA Adaptive Mission Sling Gen.4 if you're after a sling with QD hardware.
If your AK tastes dictate modern features and you're hungry for recoil and realism, the Tokyo Marui AKX ZET System Gas Blowback Rifle should be in your arsenal! An incredible quality build, from the super satisfying wobble-free mag insertion to the smooth and easy stock folding method, the AKX reminds us why Tokyo Marui is the king of Airsoft!
