Lancer Tactical LT-18 Gen.2 MK18 NSR AEG

Looking for an M4 AEG with the special forces look but without the significant weight? The Lancer Tactical LT-18 Gen.2 MK18 NSR AEG has the MK18 MOD.1 look with its CNC aluminium quad-railed handguard, but is light and manoeuvrable thanks to its majority high-density polymer construction. This, the "NSR" version, boasts an updated "billet" style receiver and modernised ergonomic furniture, providing a modern style-up which makes it stand out amongst the plethora of MK18s out there!

The MK18 MOD.1 platform is the current issue rifle for the US Navy SEALs and is used by a whole host of other Special Forces organisations, including Delta Force and US Army Rangers, and is also a very popular rifle in its civilian form on the US tactical shooting scene. It may not be KeyMod or M-LOK, but the straight-talking DD style quad rail on the MK18 makes it ready for 20mm Picatinny accessories without the need for adapters and allows an M203 grenade launcher to be mounted directly to the barrel by removing the lower section of the handguard. Let's see a Key-LOK rail do that!

Starting at the tip of the 10.5-inch alloy outer barrel, we are met with a tri-prong flash hider which conceals 14mm CCW male threading beneath. The tri-prong device suits the MK18 MOD.1 build well, but if you are going full SF with this rifle, you will be happy to learn it can accept any tracer unit or suppressor which mounts to the common 14mm CCW male threading. A KAC or SF-style suppressor or tracer would be perfect on this rifle!

The handguard begins practically immediately following the flash hider, being 10 inches in length. This handguard is a great replica of the real steel MK18 MOD.1 handguard and boasts 20mm Picatinny rails machined in at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions along the full length of the handguard. The lower section of the handguard can also be removed, leaving the bare barrel exposed to allow for the most realistic mounting of an M203 grenade launcher, directly to the barrel. Whatever you plan on mounting to your primary, the LT-18 is ready for it!

The upper rail of the handguard meets the receiver rail seamlessly, providing a massive 16 inches of uninterrupted rail space along the top; perfect for optical sights of any length. Included in the box, the LT-18 has a set of polymer flip-up aperture iron sights designed to mount to the top rail, which are fully adjustable and can either serve as primary sights to tide you over until you get a red dot on this bad boy, or left flipped down to act as backup sights to your primary sight. The spring-assisted deployment of these sights makes them especially useful as BUIS, as you can simply press the tab on the rear of each of the sights to have them snap up and into place in an instant, ready to take the shot!

The receiver of the LT-18 is significantly styled up to match real steel "Billet" receivers, providing modern looks to pair with its ambidextrous fire controls. The fire selector is positioned just above the pistol grip on either side and offers 3 modes of fire: SAFE, SEMI and AUTO, with a 90-degree throw between each mode. This makes the selector easy to switch, but not so easy that it can be knocked out of position accidentally. The fire selector is also an enhanced design, and this, paired with its ambidextrous functionality, makes it fantastic for use in all weather, with or without gloves, left or right-handed!

The magazine release is on the right side of the magazine well and is also an extended design with a secondary mag release on the opposite side, accessible for either left or right-handed users with the tip of the trigger finger. The charging handle, located at the top rear of the receiver, is also ambidextrous, allowing it to be pulled from either side with a single finger, in line with modern AR-15 shooting doctrine. Ambidextrous controls are the primary improvement in Lancer's Gen.2 NSR line, providing a more advanced look and ensuring left-handed shooters are at no disadvantage.

Pulling back the charging handle will open the dust cover and retract the mock bolt carrier to allow access to the rotary HOP-up adjuster. This is the latest HOP-up unit design for the M4/AR15 and provides finer increments of adjustment and holds its setting more effectively when compared to the older gear-style HOP-up unit.

The trigger is a flat-style trigger, pairing well with the modernised "billet" style receiver. The trigger guard is an enlarged and built into the receiver, which allows easy access to the trigger when wearing gloves and improves the overall strength of the receiver. The pistol grip is a modern ergonomic design with a filled backstrap and a reduced grip angle, allowing for more comfortable shooting in CQB when you are running the stock fully collapsed.

The LT-18 also includes a dummy forward assist button to keep the rifle looking faithful to the real MK18 MOD.1. Present on the right side of the upper receiver, the forward assist is a separate moving part which can be pressed in but does not affect the function of the AEG.

At the rear of the receiver, we are treated to an ambidextrous sling plate, which is constructed from steel, providing ample strength to support the LT-18 on a single-point sling. This sling point can also be paired with a front sling point (available separately) if you prefer a two-point sling setup for better stability when moving with the rifle stowed. The high-density polymer AR buffer tube mounts directly following the sling point, offering 6 positions of adjustment for the Lancer Tactical "NSR" stock, making it suitable for any body type.

The NSR stock can be adjusted by holding the adjustment lever on the bottom of the stock and pulling the stock out to the desired length. A modern, low profile design with a rolled toe for ease of use with body armour, the NSR is a fantastic stock, taking inspiration from some of the latest and greatest real steel designs. The butt plate is rubber, offering plenty of grip for wet-weather skirmishes, and the adjustment lever has texture on it to ensure you can make effective stock adjustments in the field.

The battery compartment of the LT-18 is inside either the buffer tube or the crane stock, and the choice of which you use depends on your battery. If you are using the buffer tube, a 7.4V 1200mAh LiPo stick battery is ideal, though you may need to leave the stock extended in order to fit it comfortably. To get into the buffer tube, simply pull the stock adjustment lever out and with it held in place, the stock can be slid off entirely to the rear.

The other option is to make use of the battery compartment inside the stock itself, which can be accessed by pressing the two protruding tabs at the toe of the stock and then pushing them through. With this done, the butt plate can be lifted free, revealing a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you mount your battery. If you are stowing your battery inside the NSR stock, you can fit a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo in nunchuck configuration. Included in the set, we are also treated to a 9.6V 1600mAh NiMh battery to get you going, though you will need a NiMh charger to charge it.

So, if you feel the need for MK18 but you want to stay light and quick on your feet, the LT-18 would be the one for you. Its CNC aluminium handguard gives the prerequisite MK18 looks, and its high density polymer receiver and buffer tube keep the weight to a minimum.
