Description
About the real M60E4 / MK43 MOD 0 "Pig" Light Machinegun
The real M60 is probably the most iconic light machine gun of all time, favoured by John Rambo in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Arnie in Commando (1985), and Sgt Mac in Predator (1987). A pop culture icon with an interesting history in real-world service, if you're a big guy seeking a big guy gun, the M60 will definitely keep you happy!
Taking design cues from the MG42 "Hitler's Buzzsaw" and FG42 Paratrooper rifles of the WW2 Wehrmacht, the unique configuration of the M60 makes it almost a bullpup, keeping overall length short with a magazine mounted adjacent to the pistol grip, a very advanced design for its time.
This variant, the M60E4, was designed for a mix of traditional prone shooting and shoulder-fire, equipped with a folding bipod, integral foregrip and a shortened, quick-detach barrel. The M60E4 was known as the MK43 MOD 0 in service with the US Navy SEALs, who loved the '60 for its relatively lightweight, portable design and the impressive ballistic effect of its 7.62x51mm NATO chambering.
Platform Details
Starting at the front of this impressive platform, we have a multi-port flash hider, a perfect match for the early-build M60E4, pre-adoption of the "duckbill" flash hider. The flash hider mounts to 14mm CCW male barrel threading, meaning you can add a tracer unit or suppressor if required. Real M60s weren't used with suppressors in the real world, but this is Airsoft, do as you see fit!
Mounted to the top of the barrel, we can find the front sight tower, a tall front sight which aligns well with the rear flip-up leaf aperture sight. At the top of the post, we can find a fixed front sight blade, designed to prioritise strength. Thankfully, the rear sight features both windage and elevation adjustment, allowing you to get zeroed in perfectly. The barrel is supplied seperately in the box: if you need assistance installing it, check "Special Instructions" below.
Below the outer barrel, we can find the realistic gas tube, made from aluminium to keep the front end light and pointable. The gas tube is where gas is directed rearwards by the gas piston to cycle the action, an essential part of a realistic M60 replica.
Mounted to the gas tube, we have an integrated folding bipod, equipped with length-adjustable legs so you can set up on uneven ground and lay down some serious firepower from the prone position. The bipod is deployed by pulling each leg to the rear, then folding it down. The legs are extended by pressing the catch on each and sliding them out to your chosen position. The independently adjustable legs also cover you when deploying on uneven ground, allowing you to keep your M60 level for maximum HOP-up effect.
Behind the bipod, we come to the iconic integrated front grip, a recognisable feature of the M60E4/MK43 MOD 0. This grip is great for both hip and shoulder fire, set at a comfortable angle so you can sweep between targets with ease. The foregrip is moulded as a single piece with the polymer handguard, meaning if you're shooting prone, you can still grip the handguard if needed.
On the left side of the handguard, we have a steel sling point, ideally suited to strap slings without hardware. This pairs perfectly with the rear sling point at the toe of the stock for a two-point sling solution. When choosing a sling, we suggest getting one with padding, as this near 6KG beast will be a bit awkward to wield and potentially uncomfortable with a standard sling.
On top of the barrel, we have the barrel removal handle, allowing real M60E4 barrels to be swapped when they become too hot to maintain accuracy during high volumes of fire. The original Vietnam-era M60 lacked this feature and was instead issued with an asbestos glove, which served the same function. While it was never intended to be used as a carry handle, it can be used this way as it is made from robust steel and will likely never fail.
At the front of the receiver, we can find the rear sight, a highly adjustable flip-up "leaf" style sight. This sight features a fine aperture for aiming, which is fully adjustable via the dials on the right side and below the aperture. An excellent sight design which provides the view we're all used to from Call of Duty: Black Ops and other games which feature this iconic light machine gun.
Next up, we arrive at the receiver, a substantial piece of flawlessly machined 6061 aircraft-grade aluminium. While it's a lot lighter than the steel version, this receiver is flawlessly realistic, providing the LMG experience without being too challenging to carry. The charging handle is on the right side, an extended design which can be racked back and forth, but serves no function other than to add realism.
The trigger group is on the bottom of the receiver, aligned with the feed location in this near-bullpup design. The selector switch is on the right side, offering SAFE and FULL AUTO fire modes, just like the real '60. The pistol grip itself features textured panels on either side and is slightly shorter than the usual grip to allow the operator to get nice and low in the prone position. In terms of aesthetics, the grip matches the integrated foregrip at the front perfectly.
On top of the receiver, we can find the receiver's top cover, under which we have a mock feed tray. The top cover can be raised using the rotating catch on the right side of the cover, just like a real M60. This provides access to the CNC aluminium rotary HOP-up unit, a great design which provides fine adjustment increments and holds its setting well under sustained full-auto fire. We were able to land hits at 50 meters+ in our tests, a great result for an out-of-the-box build!
Over on the left side of the M60E4, we can find the mount for the included 3000-round box magazine. The mounting position limits left-handed use of the platform, but keeps the overall length to a minimum while maximising barrel length. The magazine cradle is included separately in the box, and installation instructions can be found in the included user manual.
The included 3000-round box magazine is an auto-winding example, allowing you to prime the magazine using the pressure switch, saving you the hassle of winding a wheel. If your M60 stops feeding but the mag still has rounds on board, press the switch again to reprime and get back to shooting.
In terms of construction, the magazine ticks all the realism boxes: made with an olive green fabric cover, a corrugated cardboard belt box and polymer magazine internals with a steel feed chute. The real M60 was issued with a fabric box cover and cardboard boxes of 200-round disintegrating links. It's no wonder LCT is renowned for its museum-worthy externals with this level of detail!
At the very rear, we come to the stock, a polymer section which is mounted over the 6061 aluminium receiver. The stock features grooves on either side which perfectly match the real M60, along with a flip-up stabilising shoulder brace at the rear. At the toe, we have a sling point made from steel, a necessity for a hefty LMG like this!
The brace is designed to sit on the top of the shoulder, allowing the substantial weight of the M60E4 to be more easily supported, whether you're shooting standing or prone. The shoulder brace can be deployed by simply folding it open, with no buttons or fiddly catches to worry about.
The battery compartment is inside the stock, accessible with the top cover raised. To do this, turn the catch on the right side of the top cover clockwise, after which it can be lifted. The battery sits behind the gearbox, offering ample space for a long-lasting battery. We recommend a 7.4V 1500mAh LiPo battery for an easy fit and great performance.
Internals
Inside, the LCT M60E4 is based around a unique gearbox shell design made from alloy. The gearset is a standard steel 1*;1 ratio example running on 8mm ball bearing bushings, resulting in minimal stress on the shell and a smooth gearbox sound. The piston is made from POM polymer, with a full rack of robust steel teeth, and the spring guide is a ball-bearing-equipped quick-change example made from steel, making tuning FPS a breeze.
The piston head and cylinder head are made from CNC-machined aluminium alloy, ensuring they have the strength to go the distance, along with a perfect air seal thanks to precise CNC machining. Last but not least, an in-line MOSFET enhances the rate of fire and electrical efficiency and a 26,700 RPM motor provides the torque and speed to get the job done.
