- Full metal construction
- Next Generation Recoil Shock
- M-System/MOSFET Pre-installed
If you're after an SD6, which is a cut above the rest, the Tokyo Marui NGRS SMG-5 SD6 AEG should be in your sights! A stunning full metal build with TM's Next Generation Recoil Shock internals, this SMG-5 brings performance and realism in equal measure, boasting a functional stop firing on empty feature, electro-mechanical blowback and a pre-installed M-System MOSFET for a frighteningly fast trigger response.
Not content with beating the rest in terms of build quality and downrange effect, Tokyo Marui has gone the extra mile when it comes to quality-of-life, offering a nifty new method of battery access while keeping realism at a peak, and allowing micro tracer units to be installed beneath the integral SD-style suppressor, something previously released SMG-5 SD6s lack.
One of its stand-out features, at least in our eyes, is the ability to be HK-slapped without causing damage thanks to the internal dual-spring buffer system. If you're looking for the best electric SMG-5 SD6 on the market currently, you just found it!

Description
If you're a fan of history's most iconic firearms in their ultimate, Airsoft form, the Tokyo Marui NGRS SMG-5 SD6 AEG is exactly that. A full metal build with a superb finish, which is a dead-on match for the real thing, this SMG-5 is a big step up from standard AEGs, in terms of build quality, realistic functionality and performance.
The SMG-5 SD6 has famously been used by every Special Forces unit you can think of, combining the original SMG-5's high rate of fire, extreme reliability and exceptional accuracy with an integrated suppressor. This makes the real thing whisper quiet; perfect for eliminating lone sentries and guard dogs at the opening stages of a direct action mission.
Realism fans will love the stop firing on empty feature, which requires you to rack the charging handle after reloading, just like the real deal. With each shot, the mock bolt cycles back and forth, adding a hint of recoil with a metal-on-metal clank and making shooting that bit more exciting.
Downrange, things get even better, boasting the incredible HOP-up performance, range and accuracy we all know TM platforms for with a super-smooth running gearbox and a spritely trigger feel. Load up, get your HOP-up set, and you'll be as impressed as we were!
Starting at the front end, we can find the suppressor which perfectly matches that of the real thing in length, shape and profile. Unlike the real thing, this suppressor is removable, mounted via proprietary threading with 14mm CCW threads inside, covered by a thread protector. This means you can mount a compact tracer unit to the threading and remount the original suppressor over the top, giving you the best of both in-game functionality and realistic looks.
Following the suppressor rearwards, we come to the front sight assembly, which mimics the conventional SMG-5 with its squared front sight post surrounded by an alloy protective ring. This sight pairs perfectly with the rear rotary drum "diopter" rear sight, the sight setup which is often credited with being the best iron sight design out there. On the left side of the front sight assembly, we also have a built-in sling point, ideally located for use with the rear sling point and a two-point sling.
The front sight is not adjustable, but the rear sight can be adjusted for windage by loosening the screw on the right side of the rear sight base and sliding it back and forth. The rear sight also offers 4 options for aiming apertures which range in size from the smallest, ideal for long-range semi-auto shots, through to the largest, which is great for close-range snap shooting, low light scenarios and full auto fire.
The handguard follows the front sight and is the correct ribbed design for an authentic SMG-5 SD, providing plenty of grip and comfort for both left and right-handed shooters. The handguard is constructed from polymer but has a slightly different feel to the trigger pack, appropriately simulating the real SD6 handguard, which is made from injection-moulded rubber.
The battery compartment is inside the handguard, but accessing it is a little different to the legacy SMG-5 SD AEG. First, remove the suppressor. Next, hold the tab below the barrel downwards. With the tab held, you can slide the handguard forward, revealing the wiring and the mini-Tamiya battery connector. We recommend a 7.4V 1450mAh LiPo in crane/nun-chuck configuration.
What is known as the "cocking tube" lives just above the handguard, and as the name suggests, this is where you will find the cocking handle of the SMG-5 SD6. The design of the cocking tube is slightly different to a conventional SMG-5 and includes linear grooves in the surface to reduce heat build-up for improved shooter comfort.
The cocking handle of this NGRS system AEG can be slapped about to your heart's content, thanks to Tokyo Marui's nifty dual spring buffer system, which cushions impacts with the front of the receiver to prevent it breaking. Most Airsoft SMG-5s will instantly break if "HK Slapped", but the TM is designed with this in mind, ideal for realism fans!
As part of its "stop firing on empty" feature, the cocking handle must be worked to bring the NGRS SMG-5 SD6 back into action after a reload. You can either pull it straight back and release, or do what the real operators do: lock the charging handle into the "safety notch", swap mags, then slap the handle to send the bolt home. This is fantastic fun, and a big part of what makes the TM NGRS SD6 stand out amongst others.
The cocking handle also retracts the mock bolt carrier on the right side of the receiver, revealing the adjustable HOP-up unit. This unit allows you to increase or decrease the amount of backspin applied to your projectile, extending range and allowing the AEG to make effective use of BBs of various weights.
Moving rearwards, we arrive at the receiver, which follows the iconic SMG-5 format perfectly. The receiver is comprised of two parts, the upper metal section known as the “upper receiver” and the polymer lower section, known as the “trigger pack”.
The fire selector is present on either side of the trigger pack and offers 4 modes of fire: safe, semi-automatic, 3-round burst and fully automatic, with a 45-degree throw between fire modes. The four-position trigger pack is another rarity when it comes to Airsoft, and in this case, the quality of the polymer used is some of the best we've ever encountered.
Each fire mode is indicated with the ever-recognisable red and white bullet pictograms, which first appeared on the “Navy” style SMG-5 trigger pack and now make their way onto most modern platforms in one form or another. Safe is indicated with a crossed-out projectile in white, semi with a single projectile in red, 3-round burst with 3 projectiles in a closed box, and full auto is denoted with several red projectiles in an open box.
The grip itself is built into the trigger pack and is an ergonomic design with an enlarged trigger guard built in. This grip has been a subject of a lot of praise, and the shape and style match more modern platforms, such as the AR36, and are widely credited with being the inspiration behind the highly popular MOE and MIAD grips for the M4/AR-15. The trigger guard allows plenty of space for gloved shooters, and the trigger perfectly matches the shape of the real steel SMG.
The magazine release is also ambidextrous, being a paddle-style release positioned just ahead of the trigger guard, making the SMG-5 a fine choice for right or left-handed shooters. There is also a secondary magazine release on the right side, on the magazine well, in a similar position to that of the M4/AR-15. This gives you the option of two different magazine release styles, though we prefer the ambidextrous paddle release, as the AR style release is a bit further from the grip than on an M4 and can be harder to reach for those with smaller hands.
Running along either side of the receiver, we can see a groove, which is the track in which the sliding stock indexes. This serves both to keep the stock tight into the weapon when retracted, to reinforce the receiver and provide tracks for the bolt carrier to move along on the inside of the real thing.
At the top, we have a pair of lugs which allow for an SMG-5/G3 claw optics mount to be added if you want to mount a red dot sight or scope. These lugs are compatible with both low-profile and high-profile "claw" type mounts. We recommend grabbing a TM Claw Mount if you're running an optic for seamless compatibility.
The rear iron sight is located at the back of the receiver and is a rotary drum diopter-style sight, just like the real thing. The sight offers 4 different apertures for aiming, with the wider apertures being ideal for low-light situations and full auto fire, and the finer apertures are great for long-range shots and semi-automatic fire. Changing apertures is easy in any weather conditions thanks to the knurling at the top of the drum. Simply turn the sight to the chosen position, and it will lock into place under spring tension.
Arriving at the rear, we come to the sliding stock, made with a low-profile textured polymer butt plate, alloy stock bars and an alloy stock base finished to match the receiver and cocking tube. On the left side of the stock base, we also have our rear sling point, which is a steel sling bar designed for HK slings. Any sling can be mounted; however, like the front sling point, if you find your sling hook is too big to attach, you can add an Emersongear Universal Sling Adapter, a keyring or a paracord loop to extend it.
The stock can be extended into 2 different positions and can also be used fully collapsed for exchanges of fire at kissing distance. The fully extended position is great for shooting in less cramped situations, and the middle position is a happy medium.
To adjust the stock, push the lever on the bottom to the left, which will pop the stock off its locking mech, then you can pull the stock out to the desired position where it will lock in place. Deploying the stock is remarkably quick and easy, and when in place, there is practically no wobble.
Whether you're running an SAS-style black kit, spoofing Navy SEALs in Iraq, or simply a fan of a firearms legend in its ultimate, Airsoft form, the Tokyo Marui NGRS SMG-5 SD6 AEG should be on your shopping list. With an exciting, recoil-ridden firing experience, maximum realism, a hefty full metal build and TM reliability to back it up, this SMG-5 is without equal!
