Description
If you need a sniper's backup which will never slow you down and brings the heat when the trigger is pulled, the Tokyo Marui Vz. 61 Scorpion Mod AEP should be in your sights! A dressed-to-impress version of the classic Vz. 61 Scorpion, the "Mod" is available in black with eye-catching gloss gold accents as the Mod.M or in tactical tan as the Mod.D for the low-vis aesthetic.
The platform itself is constructed mostly from polymer with an alloy lower receiver and a mix of aluminium and steel trim parts, but don't let this put you off! Quality is top-notch as we expect from Airsoft Gods, Tokyo Marui, and being a compact and comparatively light platform, this beast makes a fantastic backup to a sniper rifle on the field.
The problem with the original Vz61 was its lack of customisation options; other than a replacement magazine, there was little to choose from. With the cutting-edge Vz. 61 Mod variant of the platform, customisation has been taken to the next level, with a new handguard design with plenty of 20mm rail space for attachments and M-LOK slots on the sides for good measure.
Thanks to being based on the original Tokyo Marui Vz. 61 AEP, all parts and accessories designed for that system are compatible, meaning that the magazines can be swapped between the old and newer versions, including the drum magazine. If you're looking to upgrade your existing Vz but don't want to buy more mags, you don't need to worry!
Starting at the front, we can find an aggressive breacher-style muzzle device at the tip of the outer barrel, starting the build off with a menacing bang! While it looks fantastic as it is, the muzzle device can be removed to reveal 14mm CCW male threading at the tip of the alloy outer barrel, ready for a tracer unit or suppressor of your choice. Threading wasn't included with the original TM Vz. 61 to keep the build authentic, but this version is good to go!
Following the muzzle device, we get straight into the modernised handguard, an M-LOK/20mm Picatinny hybrid design with M-LOK slots on the sides and 20mm Picatinny rails at the top and bottom, ready to be dressed up. The wider profile of the Vz. 61 Mod handguard also makes it far easier to grip and sweep between targets in modern shooting stances, unlike the original Vz. 61, which is best used by gripping the magazine.
Moving rearwards, we come to the receiver, which is the only recognisable part from the OG Vz. 61 Scorpion, with a mock ejection port on the top, dual charging handles on the sides and "SCORPION MOD.M/D" marked on the left side. To match the cutting-edge styling of the handguard, the left side charging handle has been extended, bringing the Scorpion Mod in line with other modern builds and making the HOP-up unit easier to access while wearing gloves.
The HOP-up unit itself is hidden inside the mock ejection port on the top, accessible with the charging handle held back. Inside, you'll find a rotary adjuster. The HOP-up allows you to tweak your trajectory by applying backspin to your BBs, seeking the flattest possible flightpath with your chosen BB weight. The AEP HOP-up unit is a fantastic design, making use of a V-shaped HOP-up nub to reduce side-to-side shot deviation and enhance accuracy significantly.
At the top rear of the receiver, we are treated to a 20mm Picatinny rail, ready for your choice of optical sight. We recommend a red dot sight for this beast, but if you've got something bigger you can squeeze on the rail, the Scorpion Mod has the range to justify it. The rail replaces the original rear sight of the Vz. 61 and makes this beast far more practical to use, something the original can only dream of!
Moving downwards, we come to the lower receiver, which is made from alloy with a discrete gunmetal grey finish. The fire selector is on the left side of the lower, easily within reach of the thumb when the Vz. 61 is held in a ready position. While it is in the same position as the original Scorpion, the fire selector switch of the "Mod" variant is rounded and extended, making it more comfortable to use and more easily accessible when wearing gloves. The fire modes are indicated with colour-coded engravings, with "0" for safe, "1" for semi-automatic fire and "20" for full auto.
The magazine release is on the left side of the receiver, a push-button design with a textured surface. The trigger is significantly styled up compared to the original Scorpion and is now a flat design with modern aesthetics, ideal for cranking out snappy double-taps. At the rear of the receiver, we can find the stock base, made from alloy with a finish to match the lower receiver, complete with a sling point on the left side, ideally suited to a single-point sling.
At the bottom of the lower receiver, we come to the pistol grip, which has been styled up to match the other modernised furniture. With gripping ribs surrounding the grip profile, this grip is fantastic for wet-weather use and gloved shooters, providing plenty of traction to keep the Vz. 61 Scorpion Mod firmly in your grasp. The grip texture matches perfectly with that on the included straight magazine, providing consistent, modern aesthetics.
The battery compartment is located inside the pistol grip and is accessible by turning the catch on the baseplate counterclockwise by a few degrees, after which it can be lifted free. The battery compartment is sized to fit the Vz. 61's specific AEP SMG battery, but Tokyo Marui includes an adapter for standard AEP 7.2V pistol batteries in the box. If you don't already have a suitable battery, the Jing Gong 7.2V 750mAh NiMh battery is compatible without the included adapter, though you will need an AEP-specific charger to charge it.
Instead of the traditional but uncomfortable over-folding Vz. 61 stock, Marui has opted to fit a side folding stock similar in design to the MP9, USW Carbine and other compact personal defence platforms, improving ergonomics and adding to the modernised look. To fold the stock, simply press the button on the top of the hinge and fold it over to the right side, where it will lock in place on the hook protruding from the handguard. To deploy the stock from the folding position, press the button on the butt plate of the stock to release the locking mechanism and fold the stock back into place.
If you're after an ultra-compact primary which is ready to rock with modern accessories, you can't ask for much better than the Tokyo Marui Vz. 61 Scorpion Mod AEP! Whether you're stalking through the woods with a sniper rifle and the enemy pops up a bit too close, or you're clearing rooms in tight quarters and want an easy time of it, this modernised classic will make you very happy!

Special Instructions
These table can be used as a reference to see if the BB weight you are using will be over acceptable Joulage limits at some Airsoft Sites in the UK. To check if the weight can be used chrono your weapon using the BB you intend to use, and then compare it to the chart.
FPS, Power and Joule Limits can vary from site to site, so please get in touch with where you're going to play with in advance to avoid disappointment.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, with a 350fps limit for Automatic Replicas, 400fps for Semi-Automatic Replicas, and 500fps for Bolt Action Replicas.
Tap the tabs below to open the relevant chart for your replica.
This table should be used for reference, and cannot be used to check one weight against another, as the weight of the BB affects the power.
In order to check if the BB can be used with your replica chronograph using the weight you wish to use and then compare it against the table.
Every time you change weights you will need to re-chrono and check against the table. This is not a conversion chart between weights.
Suggested limits are based on Joulage Limit rules used Halo Mill: Proving Grounds, and is the equivalent of 350fps, using 0.20g BB resulting in an upper limit of 1.14j.
