Based on the Knights Armament PDW, a design which was way ahead of its time, this hard-kicking GBBR is at the peak of Airsoft realism, boasting a realistic manual of arms and an incredible, immersive experience with each trigger pull.

The real KAC PDW was conceived as an answer to the problem of how to get better terminal ballistics from a compact, short-barreled rifle. This was achieved with a new cartridge, 6x35mm, with a shorter yet higher mass projectile and 70% reduced recoil compared to a 5.56 M4A1. Despite reaching its benchmark, the PDW was only adopted in small numbers, but later in its life, it was rechambered for the currently trendy PDW round, the .300 Blackout.

While WE KAC PDWs are a rarity on skirmish sites, they have plenty of perks compared to M4/AR-15 GBBRs. The PDW platform is lighter, slimmer and more compact than almost any M4 configuration while sharing its intuitive fire controls with added ambidextrous functionality. Its bolt carrier is smaller and lighter than an M4 bolt, resulting in incredible rapid-fire performance, rivalling the legendary GHK G5. Platform Details

Starting at the front, we can find a superb replica of the real steel KAC Triple Tap muzzle brake, an aggressive design which suits the menacing PDW perfectly. The brake mounts to 14mm CCW male barrel threads, meaning tracer units or suppressors are a go.

The barrel itself boasts dimples along its length in classic Knights style, functioning similarly to linear barrel fluting by reducing weight and improving heat dissipation qualities. Following the barrel back, we come to the detailed dummy gas block, a perfect match for the gas block of the real PDW, which uses a unique dual-piston design.

Next up, we reach the handguard, machined as a part of the monolithic upper to improve strength when compared to an M4/AR-15. The handguard section features 20mm Picatinny rails on all sides, ready to be kitted out with accessories. The 12 o'clock rail runs the entire length of the upper receiver, giving you plenty of space to mount your choice of optical sight.

Pre-installed on the top rail, we're treated to a set of KAC-style flip-up aperture iron sights. These sights can be raised by hand, with elevation adjustments carried out on the front sight and windage adjustments applied through the dial on the right side. The rear sight is also equipped with a short 20mm Picatinny rail riser, giving you a raised position to mount your optic, ideal for full-face protection users.

The layout of the controls mimics the M4/AR-15 platform, meaning an easy transition to the PDW if you're used to an M4. The fire selector switch is just above the pistol grip, mirrored on either side for easy access for left or right-handed shooters. The right-side fire selector is also scalloped to prevent it from digging into your hand when in the semi-automatic position. Like the M4, the fire selector has 3 positions: SAFE, SEMI and FULL AUTO, with a 90-degree throw between each.

The magazine release is on the right side of the magazine well, but just like the KAC SR-16, this part links through to an ambidextrous extension on the left side, allowing easy mag changes from either shoulder. Like an M4, this is a push-through design, meaning you can still mag flip with the PDW, though we don't recommend it with pricey gas mags involved!

On the bottom of the lower receiver, we can find the pistol grip, a shortened design with KAC-style ball texture, perfectly matching the dimples on the exposed outer barrel. The compact grip suits the intended role of the real PDW, allowing it to be easily stashed under a jacket for PSD use or under the seat in a helicopter for a worst-case scenario. The grip tang is compatible with most M4 GBBR and real steel AR-15 pistol grips, in case you fancy a change.

The bolt lock/release catch is on the left centre of the receiver, the standard ping-pong-paddle-style catch we're used to seeing on M4/AR-15s. The catch works the same way as an AR: hit the top part to release the bolt when it locks open on an empty magazine, and press the bottom section with the charging handle held back to lock the bolt open for chamber inspection or HOP-up adjustment.

The rotary HOP-up adjuster of the PDW is found inside the ejection port, accessible with the bolt locked back, as described above. The HOP-up allows you to tune the amount of backspin applied to your BBs and set your build-up for different ammo weights, seeking the flattest possible trajectory. A great perk of this unit is that it accepts standard VSR/GBB buckings, barrels and nubs, allowing you to upgrade with the best combination of popular parts.

At the rear of the receiver, the PDW boasts QD sling sockets built in, allowing QD sling swivels to be fitted for a quick-detach sling setup. You can use a single-point sling with these points, or pair them with the point at the toe of the stock for two-point sling setups.

Following the receiver, we come to the stock, a skeletonised side folding example with built-in QD sling points on the left side, ready for a QD swivel. The stock can be folded to the right side by pressing the button on the left side of the stock tang. Simply press the button and swing the stock around until it locks on the right-side receiver pin extension.

To unfold the stock, simply grab it and swing it back around into the deployed position, with no fiddly buttons or catches to worry about. This makes this stock an asset in CQB; while we usually advise keeping the stock deployed, this one is fast enough to get away with folding and unfolding mid-firefight.

Internals

This build is a WE Open Bolt system GBBR, WE's second iteration of its A.W.S.S. gas-powered training and simulation platform. The Open Bolt system boasts full bolt travel, hard recoil and a realistic manual of arms, perfect for the skilled skirmisher seeking the next level of thrill.

In terms of performance, the PDW boasts a shorter and lighter bolt carrier than a WE Open Bolt M4, resulting in better rapid-fire performance and a quicker response, more akin to the legendary GHK G5 than the usual M4 GBBR. This also means winter performance is better, though we recommend stepping up to stronger gas in cold weather.

The inner barrel and HOP-up bucking are standard VSR/GBB types, ready to be upgraded to suit your needs. Trigger group and bolt carrier upgrades are available through RA Tech, and inner barrel/HOP-up unit setups can be had through TNT. In terms of mag compatibility, the WE PDW accepts WE PDW mags (duh), WE M4/AR-15 GBBR mags (both V2 and V3) and can also accept Armourer Works M4/AR-15 GBBR Drum Mags, if you're the type to take no prisoners!

Special Instructions

This is a Gas Blowback Rifle. GBBRs require maintenance and careful handling, and we do not recommend them for new skirmishers. Things to watch out for if this is your first GBBR:

  • The rifle can be put into "Safe" mode without first being cocked, but CANNOT be cocked in "safe" mode. Generally, the best way to store a GBBR is with the magazine removed, the rifle uncocked, and the fire selector set to "semi". Do not, under any circumstances, pull the charging handle while the platform is in "Safe" as this will break the fire control group.
  • The HOP-up adjuster for this WE Open Bolt system GBBR is inside the upper receiver and is accessible with the bolt locked open. If you've got chunky fingers, we recommend using a flathead screwdriver to turn the dial.
  • GBBRs need to be cocked before the first shot, just like a GBB pistol. It is important that you do not double-load a GBBR, as this can break the nozzle. We recommend clearing the chamber of BBs with a cleaning rod in the event that you finish firing mid-magazine and the bolt does not lock back and shows an empty chamber.
  • The faster you shoot a GBBR, the less accurate it will be. This is due to pressure variance as the gas reservoir cools down. Full auto is basically for fun, and these rifles run far better when used in semi-auto mode.
  • Like a GBB pistol, GBBR magazines require maintenance. We recommend leaving a small amount of gas inside the magazine when stored and not storing the magazines in a cold or damp environment. Magazine seals and valves will need lubrication and to be kept clear of dust and debris.
