The Real M1896 Kavallerie Karabiner Broomhandle Mauser

The real steel M1896 Kavallerie Karabiner was developed by Mauser as a carbine variant of the C96 Broomhandle, extending the barrel to between 12 and 15 inches, and adding a stock and handguard. The Kavallerie Karabiner was intended for light infantry, but was never adopted due to preferences for full-sized rifle rounds. 

The Kavallerie Karabiner was later developed into the "Trench Carbine" variant with an integrated 40-round magazine, intended to replace the P08 Luger "Lange" variant. The Trench Carbine was also never adopted, but the long-barreled Mauser Broomhandle became a prized item for collectors due to its rarity, often fetching double the price of the average Broomhandle pistol.

Platform Details

Starting at the front, we come to the detailed mock rifling inside the muzzle and the front iron sight up top. The mock rifling completes the look of an authentic replica, with a slightly recessed inner barrel for maximum realism when it comes to displaying or using the Cavalry Carbine for photoshoots.

The front sight is a strong design, a nice thick squared post which pairs perfectly with the rear tangent sight on the receiver, providing a wide field of view and sights strong enough to resist the rigours of skirmishing.

Moving rearwards along the barrel, we can note its realistic profile, tapering along the length towards the tip, just like the real Cavalry Carbine. The handguard mounts as the barrel meets the receiver, made from fibre-reinforced polymer with a fantastic faux wood effect.

In terms of shape, the handguard allows for an old-school horizontal hold but also allows you to grip around the magazine well section with a "thumb brake" method if you prefer modern ways. On the bottom of the handguard, we're also equipped with a steel sling loop, ready to be paired with the rear loop on the stock for a two-point sling.

Like the barrel, the upper and lower receivers are constructed from alloy. The ejection port is located on the top, just like the real thing, showing off some detail in the form of a recess on the top to mimic the real steel M712's extractor.

Behind the ejection port, we have the rear iron sight, a tangent design like the KAR98K and AK rifles. The sight is adjustable for elevation via the button on the right side, allowing you to adjust the height of the sight notch for different ranges. The sight graduations go from 50 meters out to 1000, a bit optimistic for an Airsoft gun. Despite this, the sight can still be used and adjusted effectively, allowing you to accurately lob BBs a bit further than a fixed sight would allow.

The bolt carrier is located on the rear of the upper receiver, behind the hammer, offering two textured protrusions to manipulate it, one on each side. Like your usual GBB pistol, the M712 requires cocking before the first shot, and each time you pull the trigger, the bolt flies back under gas pressure to load your next shot.

The manual safety is located on the rear left of the receiver, within reach of the thumb, but can only be activated when the hammer is cocked. The safety disables the trigger, but it can still be pulled; if you find your trigger is spongy and doesn't fire a shot, the safety is probably on!

Moving to the lower receiver, we can find the fire selector switch just above the grip, offering two modes of fire: semi-automatic and full automatic. To switch modes, press the textured button in the centre, and the selector can be rotated. Modes are marked with "1" for semi-auto and "20" for full auto. The magazine release is on the right side, just in front of the trigger, a round textured button, which is very easy to reach, similarly positioned to that of an M4/AR-15 rifle.

At the rear, we come to the detachable carbine stock, supplied separately in the box. To install the stock, simply align the lug at the grip tang with the dovetail recess in the stock, and slide the two together until you hear a click. The stock is made from fibre-reinforced polymer with a faux wood effect, giving you authentic old-school looks without the burden of maintaining real wood.

At the toe of the stock, we have a steel sling loop, and the butt plate is made from alloy with a gloss finish which matches the other metal parts. When you're ready to pack up for the day, press the button on the left side of the stock/grip tang and you can slide the stock off for more compact storage and transportation.
