Have the itch for a new AEG but you aren't prepared to buy your 6th AR15 variant? Looking for something unique and rare, that literally no one at the skirmish site will even know what it is let alone have one? Introducing Evolution Airsoft's "Hard Core" range, more specifically the LR-300 AEG: A piston operated, no buffer tube AR15 from before the HK416, before the BRN-180, before some of you were even born! Truly ahead of its time, the LR-300 is a high grade rifle in the real world, lets take a look at its Airsoft equivalent!

Full description

Description

If you are looking for something that stands out but you have a pile of AR15/M4 AEG magazines, you'll probably want to consider Evolution Airsoft's LR-300 AEG. This rifle is a modern classic, and in the real world, it was one of the earliest examples of an AR15 rifle using a short-stroke gas piston operating system, full-length upper Picatinny rail, and bufferless side folding stock. An incredible achievement for a rifle first showcased at the 1994 shot show in Las Vegas USA. The LR-300 was designed specifically for use by special forces, and the design was intended to address many of the shortcomings in the original AR15 design, and replace the Colt model 7 series "Commando Carbines" in service with US SOCOM during the 1990s. LR-300 stands for "Light Rifle 300m range", as the prototype was a short-barrelled carbine designed for use in CQB. This rifle has featured in more than it's fair share of TV shows, Movies and Video games, including S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Kill Zone, Swordfish (2001) and Miami Vice (2006), making this rifle a pop-culture icon, though few will recognize it today.

Starting at the tip, we can find an orange plastic flash hider, which can be replaced with the steel "Phantom" style flash hider supplied with the rifle. The flash hider attaches to the alloy outer barrel via a 14mm male CCW thread, allowing you to mount suppressors, tracers and other flash hiders, should you so choose. The outer barrel itself is of the "heavy" type and features a reinforced ribbed section at the tip, which dissipates heat in the real LR-300 during rapid firing. Being a whopping 18" long, the outer barrel provides plenty of scope (get it?) for using the LR-300 as a DMR rifle, being of SPR length.

As we move towards the rear, we come to the quad Picatinny rail handguard, which provides 10 inches of Picatinny rail slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. This wealth of Picatinny rail means you can mount whatever you like to your LR-300, including vertical front grips, tactical lights, hand stops and rail covers. The upper rail is removable and is separate to the handguard, providing a stable, monolithic surface across the top of the receiver to mount optics of any length, including PEQ boxes and short-dot style scopes. Beneath the upper rail, we can find the mock gas piston, which is incredibly detailed and faithful to the real LR-300. Its DIGS (delayed impingement gas system) system is one of its many unique characteristics. Following the handguard we meet the receiver, which is finished in a fantastic hard-wearing paint, and features full accurate and licensed trademarks from Z-M Weapons. Amongst these beautiful, accurate trademarks you will find your own unique serial number, beneath the Z-M logo on the right side of the magazine well. Unlike most licensed trademarks I can see no mention of Airsoft at all, a plus for the realism freaks out there!

The receiver is of the standard AR15 configuration, with the magazine release, mock forward assist and ejection port found on the right side of the rifle, and the fire selector and functional mock bolt release on the left side. The mock bolt release is a talking point all of its own, as it functions slightly differently than most. By default, when you pull the charging handle the mock bolt does not lock to the rear. To lock the bolt you have to pull the charging handle back and hold down the bolt hold open (the lower part of the "pingpong paddle" bolt release on the left side of the rifle. Once the bolt is locked you can adjust the metal rotary hop, and release the bolt in the usual manner, by pressing down on the upper part of the bolt release. This was genuinely a shock to me, and a lovely realistic function which will have those with attention to detail in mind drooling. The mock bolt returns with a satisfying 'clunk', and feels much heavier than the mock bolt's in most rifles. An impressive and thoughtful feature which shows Evolution Airsoft care about the minor details on their products and do their utmost to give you the ultimate realistic experience. The pistol grip is a standard AR15 A2 style grip with texturing and a finger groove to ensure you have a firm hold on the rifle and it doesn't slip from your grasp, whether you are wearing gloves or not. The stock is a folding and extendable type, offering 5 positions of adjustment to suit any body type, loadout or personal preference. The 6th stock position is folded to the side, a rare feature on AR15 type replicas and extremely useful for tight spots in CQB, as well for reducing the overall length for more efficient storage and transportation. Folding the stock is similar to Galil replicas, with the mechanism being entirely contained in the hinge. The user must push their thumb on the top of the hinge whilst pushing the stock down to release the lock and fold the stock to the side. There is no latch or locking mech to unfold, meaning a quick yank can have your stock deployed quickly and ready for action. Being entirely constructed of alloy with steel trim parts, this stock is much more robust than most polymer ar15 stocks and also aids in keeping the centre of balance around the mag well for optimal handling characteristics.

The battery is stored beneath the Picatinny handguard and can be accessed by removing 8 Allen screws and removing the handguard. The space for the battery is larger than I would have thought, easily providing room for a mid-sized crane/nunchuck battery of around 1600Mah capacity. The internals of this replica are no joke, with 9mm radial ball bearing bushings, a quick release spring system, metal rotary hop, and a high torque motor installed from the factory. The rate of fire is above average and the trigger response is crisp and quick, owing to the high torque motor. The gearbox noise is very low, with the 9mm radial bushings ensuring the gears run smoothly and quietly whilst firing. The use of larger bearing equipped bushings in combination with steel gears ensures the gearbox will run with minimal stress on parts, allowing your gearbox to last until the end of time without any failures. The quick-change spring system is just icing on the cake, making optimising your replica for your site limits an easy task, without compromising the well-shimmed gearbox in the process!

So if you are looking for a modern classic, something that could feature on Forgotten Weapons but could also go toe to toe with an HK416 you have found it in the Evolution Airsoft Z-M LR-300 AXL!
