Lancer Tactical LT-02 Gen.2 M4A1 CQBR NSR AEG

If you like an old-school build with a sprinkle of modernity, the Lancer Tactical LT-02 Gen.2 M4A1 CQBR NSR AEG should be in your sights! Made predominantly from high-density polymer with an alloy outer barrel and a mix of alloy and steel trim parts, the LT-02 NSR is the revamped version of the original LT-02, boasting a modernised receiver design with ambidextrous fire controls and enhanced "NSR" furniture inspired by the very best in real steel ergonomic parts. If you're one for the classics but appreciate modern ergonomics, the LT-02 will put a big smile on your face!

Starting at the front, we can see a three-prong "SF" style flash hider mounted to the 14mm CCW male threading at the tip of the 10.5-inch alloy outer barrel. The SF device is a serious style-up compared to the usual birdcage flash hider, giving the LT-02 a more stylish look than its rivals, straight out of the box. The 14mm CCW male threaded barrel also means LT-02 is ready to be kitted out with a tracer unit or suppressor, or an alternative muzzle device for a more customised look. 

Next up, we come to the M4A1-style triangular front sight post, which houses the front sight and mock bayonet lug. The bayonet lug is non-functional in the CQBR configuration due to the shortened 10.5-inch outer barrel, though if you want to add one, you can mount a 4.5-inch barrel extension to allow for it. The front sight itself is adjustable for elevation using an M4/AR-15 front sight adjustment tool, and for less precise work up close, it can be used as an index point for rapid aiming when there is no time to align the sights.

Mounted to the bottom of the front sight assembly, we have our first sling point, which is a standard alloy footman loop compatible with a wide variety of sling types. This can be paired with any of the 3 rear sling mounting options to fit a two-point rifle sling to take the burden off your arms or allow for easy transitions to a sidearm. The perk of a relatively old-school front-end design is that all the sling points are built in, meaning no extra adapters are needed!

Following the front sight, we come to the handguard assembly, which is constructed from a combination of alloy, steel and high density polymer. The KAC RAS style handguards themselves are polymer and are equipped with 20mm Picatinny rails at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock, ready for your mission essential kit to be mounted. The handguards are held in place using a steel handguard cap at the front and an alloy delta ring at the rear. The handguards are made in two parts, allowing you to remove the lower handguard and mount an M203 launcher to the barrel for some extra firepower.

The modularity of the M4 platform is easily its best feature, and it is no surprise that it gained the nickname "Barbie for men" following its "SOPMOD Block 1" upgrade. This modularity also extends to exchanging external parts, and with an M4/AR-15 armourer's wrench, you can change the entire front set of the LT-02 and make it look like practically any M4/AR-15 variant out there. Even if you don't have an armourer's wrench, the delta ring front end is compatible with any 7-inch drop-in rail system or handguard set for delta rings, so if you want to change up the looks of your LT-02, you'll be happy to learn that it can be done without a single tool!

The receiver of the LT-02 is significantly styled up to match real steel "Billet" receivers, providing modern looks to pair with its ambidextrous fire controls. The fire selector is positioned just above the pistol grip on either side and offers 3 modes of fire: SAFE, SEMI and AUTO, with a 90-degree throw between each mode. This makes the selector easy to switch, but not so easy that it can be knocked out of position accidentally. The fire selector is also an enhanced design, and this, paired with its ambidextrous functionality, makes it fantastic for use in all weather, with or without gloves, left or right-handed!

The magazine release is on the right side of the magazine well and is also an extended design with a secondary mag release on the opposite side, accessible for either left or right-handed users with the tip of the trigger finger. The charging handle, located at the top rear of the receiver, is also ambidextrous, allowing it to be pulled from either side with a single finger, in line with modern AR-15 shooting doctrine. Ambidextrous controls are the primary improvement in Lancer's Gen.2 NSR line, providing a more advanced look and ensuring left-handed shooters are at no disadvantage.

Pulling back the charging handle will open the dust cover and retract the mock bolt carrier to allow access to the rotary HOP-up adjuster. This is the latest HOP-up unit design for the M4/AR15 and provides finer increments of adjustment and holds its setting more effectively when compared to the older gear-style HOP-up unit.

The trigger is a flat-style trigger, pairing well with the modernised "billet" style receiver. The trigger guard is an enlarged and built into the receiver, which allows easy access to the trigger when wearing gloves and improves the overall strength of the receiver. The pistol grip is a modern ergonomic design with a filled backstrap and a reduced grip angle, allowing for more comfortable shooting in CQB when you are running the stock fully collapsed.

The LT-02 also includes a dummy forward assist button to keep the rifle looking faithful to the real MK18 MOD.1. Present on the right side of the upper receiver, the forward assist is a separate moving part which can be pressed in but does not affect the function of the AEG.

At the rear of the receiver, we are treated to an ambidextrous sling plate, which is constructed from steel, providing ample strength to support the LT-02 on a single-point sling. This sling point can also be paired with a front sling point (available separately) if you prefer a two-point sling setup for better stability when moving with the rifle stowed. The high-density polymer AR buffer tube mounts directly following the sling point, offering 6 positions of adjustment for the Lancer Tactical "NSR" stock, making it suitable for any body type.

The NSR stock can be adjusted by holding the adjustment lever on the bottom of the stock and pulling the stock out to the desired length. A modern, low-profile design with a rolled toe for ease of use with body armour, the NSR is a fantastic stock, taking inspiration from some of the latest and greatest real steel designs. The butt plate is rubber, offering plenty of grip for wet-weather skirmishes, and the adjustment lever has texture on it to ensure you can make effective stock adjustments in the field.

The battery compartment of the LT-02 is inside either the buffer tube or the crane stock, and the choice of which you use depends on your battery. If you are using the buffer tube, a 7.4V 1200mAh LiPo stick battery is ideal, though you may need to leave the stock extended in order to fit it comfortably. To get into the buffer tube, simply pull the stock adjustment lever out, and with it held in place, the stock can be slid off entirely to the rear.

The other option is to make use of the battery compartment inside the stock itself, which can be accessed by pressing the two protruding tabs at the toe of the stock and then pushing them through. With this done, the butt plate can be lifted free, revealing a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you mount your battery. If you are stowing your battery inside the NSR stock, you can fit a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo in nunchuck configuration. Included in the set, we are also treated to a 9.6V 1600mAh NiMh battery to get you going, though you will need a NiMh charger to charge it.
